Zeus, a one year old Shepherd Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. He comes to us know some commands, but not always following them if distracted. He gets easily distracted out in public, doesn’t walk properly on leash, jumps to greet, and is skittish around bikes and motorcycles. Over the two weeks Zeus will be working towards his off leash  obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Zeus is settling in well at my home. He got to meet my pack. He made a new best friend, Rook the Husky/Shepherd. They have been running around and playing since Zeus arrived. I am going to let him get adjusted to his new surroundings today and begin his training tomorrow. Above is a tutorial video of the Ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with the training collar.

Today Zeus and I went to the park to work on his obedience. I introduced and conditioned him to the Ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. Place is a command where Zeus’s sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for building confidence, working on distance and duration, as well as teaching Zeus to be calm and relaxed. He was a little nervous with the dog cot at first, but once he realized he was safe in it, he was hopping on and off of the cot with ease. We need some more work on his duration. Zeus will hold his command for a short period and want to break command. It’s only the first day, so it is to be expected. We will continue to practice and improve. Zeus had a great first day of training!

Today Zeus and I trained at home. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, and Place commands. I used his friend as a distraction while we trained. At first, Zeus was a little distracted by his friend, wanting to go play with him. After some repetition, he was able to ignore his buddy and follow his commands. We worked more on his duration.  He did well and was able to stay in his commands a little longer than yesterday. Once training was over Zeus got to run around and play with his friend.

Today Zeus and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus on his commands. Zeus is getting better with his distance and duration. He was able to hold his commands as I moved around and walked away from him. He pretty well walking through the aisles, passing by people. He did get a little nervous when we got to a busier section of the store. One of the employees tried talking to him, but Zeus shied away.

Today Zeus and I went to a local shopping center to work on his commands. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He was a very good boy and followed all of his commands. Zeus was a little anxious with the cars that were driving around in the parking lot, so I had him lie down and just observe the cars as they passed. Once he relaxed and was no longer interested we proceeded back to our training.

Today Zeus and I went to the park to work on his commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Zeus could practice around other dog distractions. He was distracted by the dogs at first, but as we worked on his commands Zeus was able to ignore them and focus. He is doing very well with his duration and distance. We just need to tighten up a few of his commands and he will be ready to start training semi-off leash.

As we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus on his training. He did a great job with his duration and distance. Zeus had many admirers that complimented him on his training.

Today Zeus and I went to the shopping outlet to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little distracted when we first arrived, but still able to focus on his training. We tried to do some semi-off leash training, but security wouldn’t let Zeus drag his leash. He did a great job following all his commands. He received a few compliments from shoppers that were passing by. They said Zeus is doing a great job and they are impressed with how well mannered he is.

Today Zeus and I trained at home. We practiced all of his commands and worked on his distance and duration. We also worked on his door manners.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.) Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take him out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.
