Teddy | Terrier Mix | Los Angeles, CA | In-Training

Writer: Amanda LascariAmanda Lascari

Teddy, a three year old Terrier Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Teddy comes to us knowing some commands, being easily distracted out in public, pulling on the leash while walking, being destructive, and having separation anxiety. Over the two weeks Teddy will be working towards his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Teddy is settling in at my home. Introduced him to my pack. He was a bit shy with my German shepherd. Her size was a little intimidating for him. He warmed up really quickly to my small dogs. I am going to let him get adjusted to his new surroundings and get to know me. We will begin his training tomorrow. Above is a tutorial video of the Ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as any times as you need to become familiar to the training tool.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his obedience. I introduced and conditioned him to the Ecollar. We practiced his commands Sit and Place. Place is a command where Teddy must sit or lay on a defined object. He must know this command already or he is just a very smart boy because Teddy caught on quickly. We do need more work on his duration. He tries to get up shortly after he does a command. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Teddy could practice around other dog distractions.

Today Teddy and I went to the park again to work on his obedience. We practiced more on the sit and place commands. We also practiced his Heel. It is still a work in progress, but Teddy is walking much better. He is staying on my left side and not trying to drag me around. He still tries to go a little ahead of me at times, but slows back down when I remind him to heel.

Today Teddy and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little distracted at first, but as we walked around and practiced his commands Teddy was able to settle down and focus. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. Teddy is getting much better with holding his sit command. Down was a little hard for him to hold. He did fine if I walked around in front of him, but if I tried to walk behind Teddy would get up to see where I was at. He heeled nicely at my side as we walked through the aisles and passed by people.

Today Teddy and I went to the shopping outlet to work on his obedience. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. It was very busy, so Teddy had a lot of distractions to work around. He was a little anxious, but still able to focus on his training. Teddy was able to practice his commands semi off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we trained. He did pretty well. We just need to tighten up a few of his commands and he will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Teddy and I stayed at home to train. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them hangout around us while we trained. He was a good boy, ignored his buddies, and stayed focused on his training. We also worked on his door manners.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.) Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take him out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced all his commands semi-off leash. It was nice and quiet at the park, so I was able to have Teddy’s full attention. He wasn’t too thrilled about the chilly weather, but he stayed focused and followed his commands. After training Teddy and walked around the park. He enjoyed running around and exploring park with this semi-off leash freedom.

Merry Christmas Eve! Today was chilly, so Teddy I stayed indoors to train. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. We also worked on his food and door manners.

The benefits of food manners is:

-Impulse control-Waiting for food helps your dog learn patience

-Reducing Anxiety and possessiveness- Good food manners can help reduce your dog's excitement, anxiety, or possessiveness around food.

-Not eating things he’s not supposed to- good food manners will teach him not to grab and eat things off the floor. Just because there is food on the floor does not mean it belongs to him .
