Murphy | Labrador Retriever | Los Angeles, CA | In-Training

Murphy, a seven month old Labrador Retriever, joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Murphy comes to us knowing some commands, being easily distracted, jumping to greet, and pulling on the leash while walking. Over the two weeks Murphy will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Murphy is settling in at my home. He got to meet some of the pack. He did very well meeting the other dogs. He had fun running around and playing with them.

Today Murphy and I went to the park to work on his commands. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. Place is a command where Murphy must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for confidence building as well as teaching him to be calm and relaxed. Murphy did very well and caught on to his new command quickly. He was a little stubborn with the down, but we will keep practicing. He did a great job on his first day of training. Above is a tutorial video for the ecollar. I didn't get to send you home with one, but you can watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with the training collar.

Today Murphy and I trained at home. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, and Place commands. We worked on a new command, Heel. It is still a work in progress, but Murphy is walking much better. He is staying close to my side and focusing on me and where I am going. He is still being a little stubborn with his Down, but I make sure that he follows through with what I ask of him.

Today Murphy and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Murphy had plenty of distractions to work around. He was really distracted in the beginning, wanting to say hi to all the other dogs, but as we practiced his commands he was able to settle down and focus. Murphy is improving with his duration. He is able to hold his sits and downs a little bit longer.

Today Murphy and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. We are working on his distance. He is doing very well holding the commands if I am close to him, but if I try to walk away Murphy will break to follow me. We will continue to practice and improve.

Today Murphy and I went to Loweā€™s to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a bit distracted with the new surroundings, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus on his commands. We came across another dog in store, which made it hard for Murphy to stay focused on his commands. We will start working around more dog distractions, so Murphy can become desensitized when we see other dogs out in public.

Today Murphy and I went to the outdoor shopping mall to work on his obedience around distractions. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. Murphy did pretty well. He was focused and obedient. We had a few admirers that stopped to watch us train. A gentleman approached and complimented Murphy on his good behavior. Murphy sat nicely while the gentleman pet him.

Today Murphy and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. Murphy did very well staying focused and ignoring his friends. Once training was over, I let him join in on the fun and run around with his buddies.

Today Murphy and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we worked. He did pretty well. We need some more work on his duration while I move around. Murphy struggles with holding his commands when I try to walk behind him. He feels like he has turn around in order to keep his focus on me. We need to tighten up a few of his commands and then he will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Murphy and I went to the mall to work on his obedience around distractions. We practiced his commands completely off leash! We met with other Offleash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Murphy could practice around other dog distractions. He did pretty well. Even though he wanted say hi to the dogs, Murphy stayed focused and followed all his commands.
