Frieda, a four year old German Shepherd, has joined us for our Two Week Board and Train program. Frieda comes to us knowing commands, but not always following them if distracted. She likes to lead or pull on walks, is protective of her owners around strangers and children, runs out the door, and can be reactive to dogs. Over the two weeks Frieda will be working on her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Frieda is settling in well at my home. She met a few dogs from my pack. She did well meeting them. She wasn’t too interested in playing. She was more interested in exploring her new surroundings. I’m sure she will be ready to socialize once she gets settled in.

Today Frieda and I went to the park to work on her obedience. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We did a little run through of all her commands, so I could see what she needs more work on. She responds really well to Sit. Frieda was a little stubborn with down. Heel was a bit of a struggle, she was trying to pull me around. Heel is a structured walk where Frieda must be at my side. I want her ears right next to my leg, her nose can be the only thing sticking out in front of me. Heel is a job, so Frieda needs to focus on me. She’s not allowed to put her nose to the ground to sniff, focus on distractions around us, react to other people or dogs we come across. I should be the most important distraction out in public. It took us a good 10-15 minutes before she started staying at my side and focusing on me and where I was walking. Not bad for her first day of training.

Today Frieda and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We practiced all her commands. We worked on her duration and her distance. She does very well holding her commands, except when I try to distance myself from her. When I get too far away from her, Frieda will try to break command and move towards me. She did better with her heel command today, staying at my side and focusing on me. She did well around all the people, duck, and dog distractions.

Today Freida and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. She did very well. Frieda was focused and obedient. We worked more on her heel command. In the video you can see I used weaving poles. These are great for working on tight turns and having Frieda stay close to my side. Above is a tutorial video of the ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need to become familiar with the training collar.

Today Frieda and I went to the park to work on her commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Frieda could work around other dog distractions. She did very well around all the dogs, even an excitable puppy that was jumping all over her. She did pretty well with her commands, staying focused and ignoring all the dogs.

Today Freida and I went to the mall to work out of the heat and train around distractions. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Frieda could work around more dog distractions. She did very well. She was focused and obedient. Frieda had a few admirers that stopped to watch her train. She received a few compliments on how well mannered she is.

Happy Fourth of July! Today Freida and I went to Lowe’s to work on her commands and stay out of the heat. She did pretty well. We were able to train semi-off leash. I let Frieda drag the leash while we trained. She was a little stubborn with her ‘get ready’ command. We need to tighten up a few of her commands, then Frieda will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Freida and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We practiced more semi-off leash. We worked on getting Frieda to stay closer while in the heel command. We worked on her distance and duration. She does well holding the command, but if I walk behind her she will try to get up and turn around to see where I am at. Frieda did very well with yesterday’s fireworks. We didn’t need to use any of her medication. I am in a rural area, so fireworks are prohibited. The fireworks that we heard were off in the distance, which didn’t bother her.

Today Frieda and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. I used her friends as a distraction and let them play while we trained. We worked on her door manners. For door manners Frieda must wait at thresholds. She is only allowed to pass when given permission.

Today Freida and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We met with the other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so she could practice around more dog distractions. She did very well working off leash around the other dogs. We were able to heel past them smoothly, even with one of the puppies barking at her. Frieda ignored the puppy and continued in her Heel. She held her commands nicely as the other dogs walked around her. Frieda did a great job today!

Today Freida and I stayed home to train. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. We also practiced her food manners. You can see in the video Frieda was very enthusiastic about meal time. For food manners, Frieda must wait patiently for her meal. Just because the bowl touches the floor does not mean she can go and eat it. She needs to wait until given permission.

Today Freida took the day off from training and spent her last day playing and socializing with her friends before she goes home tomorrow. She has done an amazing job with her obedience training! Frieda can’t wait to go home and show you everything she has learned!
