Benji | English Bulldog | Villa Park, CA | In Training

Meet Benji! He's a seven month old English Bulldog from Villa Park, California here for our Two-Week Board and Train program. Benji is a sweet pup, but he has trouble following basic commands. He loves to pull on his leash, play bite, and jump on people. He also needs some potty training during his time here. Over the next fourteen days, we'll teach Benji how to properly greet people, how to behave on and off leash, and show him how to be the best pup he can possibly be! Stay tuned for Benji's two week transformation.

After picking up Benji, we got to know each other at Hacienda Park. He hung out with his brother and sister for a few minutes while there. Benji seems to be taking a liking to me, although he was sad to see his parents leave. Once we got home, I let Benji sniff around the house and got him used to staying here!

Benji and I went to Pioneer Park today for his first full day of training! We worked on his Sit command and his Heel command. He's starting off well with each of these! For Heel, I want Benji to be able to walk nicely on my left side, with his ears in line with my leg. He would sometimes try to veer to the side to sniff something, but he seems to be progressing very well!

Benji and I spent the day at Almansor Park. His Heel command is getting much better, and we introduced him to the Come To Sit command! For Come To Sit, I want Benji to come to my right side, walk around my legs, and sit on my left side with his ears at my leg. Benji is starting to get the hang of it. I noticed Benji also seemed very interested in some of the geese and ducks around the park! They would sometimes draw his attention away from his commands, but he still did a good job.

Benji and I went to Cheviot Hills Park today for training! In the above video, you can see Benji perform his Come To Sit command, as well as his Place command! For Place, I want Benji to hop onto a raised object, in this case a small cot, and remain there until I either release him from command or ask him to perform a new command. His Come To Sit is getting good, and he picked up the Place command fairly quickly!

Benji and I went to Almansor Park this morning! We mostly had a fun day, but we did work on his Down command! Benji didn't really like laying down when asked, but he's starting to get the hang of it. Since it's Thanksgiving, Benji is also getting a few extra treats today!

Benji and I went to the Santa Monica Pier today! This was the most crowded area we've been so far, but Benji did a great job. In the above video, Benji does very well, until a certain point when he decides he doesn't want to work and wants to just flop on the ground and roll over. I know he wasn't actually tired, as the video was taken very early in the morning. When Benji does this, we want to make sure we follow through with our commands and help Benji to keep working!

Benji and I went to Home Depot today for training! We started working through his commands with his leash dragging. This allows me to get an idea of how he might perform off leash while still having the leash available if needed. He was very attentive and did all of his commands confidently! He still hit a point where he wanted to stop working and either lay down or start playing. I think he lasted a little longer today, so he's heading in the right direction!

Benji and I went to Almansor Park today for training! He started working off leash! He did so well yesterday that I decided to see how he would do with the leash fully off, and I wasn't disappointed! He did very well. He sometimes likes to stand up a little early from his down, but he's progressing so well, I don't imagine that will be an issue for much longer.

Benji went to Whittier Narrows park today for training! He was off leash all day, and did a wonderful job. He was around several other dogs and trainers, but he behaved himself very well! For Benji's potty training, he seems to be progressing well. He had a couple accidents at the beginning of last week, but he's been doing great since. He is getting very good at going potty when asked, in patches of grass and other appropriate places.

Benji and I went to Citadel Outlets today for training! He did very well! He was off leash for most of the day, and was well mannered the whole time. There were tons of distractions, including people, other dogs, strollers and carts, but Benji didn't seem to mind! His video for today is from last night. We visited Home Depot with a few other trainers and their dogs. In this video, Benji is being handled by another trainer. Having another trainer work with Benji is a good way to see how well he's actually learning his commands, as opposed to just following me because he likes me! Benji did fairly well with the other trainer, although he would veer off from time to time.

Benji and I started off the day at Cheviot Hills Park, where he did a great job and got to go on a nice walk around the park with some other dogs! After that, we went to the Block of Orange where there were a few more distractions. He did a great job at both locations! I noticed a section of Benji's neck is starting to get tender from his E collar, so I'll be switching Benji to hypoallergenic contact points for his collar. In the meantime, I'm keeping the area clean, and applying neosporin until it fully heals.

Benji and I went to Central Park in Pasadena this morning! Afterward, we went back to The Block of Orange where Benji did very well! He did pretty well yesterday, but he did even better today! The neosporin seems to be helping his rash and it looks like it's already getting better.

Benji and I went back to The Block of Orange today for training! He did great off leash all day. He was able to walk through several big crowds without trying to veer off. He also was approached by several strangers who wanted to pet him, and he allowed them to do so without jumping or breaking his commands!

Benji and I went to Cheviot Hills Park for his last full day of training! For his video today, I wanted to show some of the manners he's been working on for the last couple weeks. For food manners, I want Benji to sit nicely when I place food in front of him without him immediately trying to gobble it up. For Door manners, I want to be able to open the door without Benji rushing through before me. For car manners, I want him to hop into the car and walk directly into his kennel when asked! Benji is such a sweetheart and I've enjoyed my time with him! I'll miss him once he goes home.
