Ash | Labrador Retriever | Santa Ana, CA | In-Training

Ash, a four month old Labrador Retriever, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Puppy Board and Train program. Ash comes to us with typical puppy behavior: being easily distracted, little knowledge of commands, not walking properly on leash, not potty trained, chewing, and excessive barking. Over the three weeks Ash will be working on his on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Ash is settling in well at my home. He was a bit shy, this morning, when meeting the other dogs. Throughout the day he began to slowly warm up to each of them. Ash ended the day playing and socializing with all the dogs. During feeding time, Ash was showing signs of resource guarding with food. He was growling and snapping at the other dogs, trying to guard a dog bowl that wasn't even his. During his training we will be working on he resource guarding.

Today Ash and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other offleash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so he had plenty of dog distractions to train around. We practiced commands: Sit, Down, and Place. Place is a. Command where Ash must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is greet for building confidence, as well as teaching him to be relaxed and calm. He did a great job on his first day of training.

Today Ash and I worked on his obedience at home. We practiced more of Sit, Place, and Down. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play while Ash and I trained. Ash was a bit distracted and wanted to join in on the fun, but I made sure he followed through with his commands. After a little while of training, he was able settle down and focus on his commands. Once training was over I let him join his friends for playtime. I noticed Ash had soft stool today, most likely from the treats. I added some anti-diarrhea liquid to his food and fed him white rice. I will keep an eye on it and see how he is feeling tomorrow.

Today Ash and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We worked on two new commands: Come to Sit and Heel. Come to Sit can be a bit tricky, but Ash caught on pretty quickly. Heel is still a work in progress but he was walking much better, staying closer to my side. Ash’s stool isn’t completely back to normal, but is looking better. I added more anti-diarrhea liquid to his meals.

Today Ash and I stayed home and worked on his obedience. We worked indoors to stay out of the rain. We practiced a lot of his Come to Sit, Down, and Place. We started working on his duration, getting Ash to hold his commands longer. It was a little bit of a struggle, he wanted to keep getting up after performing the commands. The more we practice the better Ash will become.

Today Ash and I went to Lowes to work on his commands around distractions. He did very well. He was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained Ash was able to settle down and focus. The only struggle we had today was greeting people. Ash tried his hardest to hold a sit while someone pet him, but couldn’t resist jumping up to say hi. Ash’s stool is back to normal.

Today Ash and I went back to Lowes to work on his commands around distractions and stay out of the rain. Once again, Ash did a great job. This time he was more focused and not as distracted with his surroundings. There were a few customers that stopped to watch Ash train. They gave him compliments on how well mannered he is for only being four months old.

Today Ash and I stayed home for training. We practiced all his commands. We worked on his duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them be around while we trained. Ash did a great job staying focused and following his commands. He payed no attention to his buddies. Ash is having some trouble holding his sit when I try to circle around him. He wants to spin around to watch where I am walking. You can see in the video every time I make a full circle around him, without him moving, I pay him with his kibble. The more we practice the better Ash will become.

Today Ash and I went to the park to work on his commands. We worked on his distance and duration. We practiced holding his sits and downs while I walk circles around him, making sure he doesn’t spin around to follow where Im walking. Ash practiced semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash to see if he would still follow his commands without me having to use leash pressure. He actually did pretty good, only a few times he needed my help with the leash to guide him. Ash did get a little distracted with the child that was walking by us, but did well with ignoring the other dogs we passed.

Today I took Ash and his training buddy, Fluffy, to the mall to work on their obedience around distractions. Ash did very well and obeyed all his commands. He was a little nervous with it being so windy, but was still able to stay focused. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Ash had plenty of dog distractions to work around.

Today Ash and I went to Lowes to work on his obedience around distractions. He did great around the people distractions. Dog distractions was a little hard for him to stay focused around. Unfortunately the woman allowed her puppy to walk right up to Ash, so I can’t blame him for breaking command to say hi. He greeted the other puppy politely and calmly.  Once they walked away, Ash refocused on me and followed his commands.

Today Ash and I stayed home to stay out of the rain and train. We practiced all his commands. We worked on his food manners, teaching Ash that just because I put the food down doesn’t mean it belongs to him. Only when given permission he can have it. We want to teach him that things that are on the floor are not for him to grab. We also worked on his door manners, teaching Ash that he cannot pass the doorway, or any threshold, until allowed.

Today Ash and I had an easy day of training. We worked on his commands around the neighborhood. Ash spent the rest of the day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. Ash has done a great job with his training! He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
