Willow is a 7-month-old Shepherd/Husky mix from Yucca Valley, CA, here for her two-week Community Board and Train program. She’s a bright, energetic young pup with a sweet personality and tons of potential. Like many adolescents her age, Willow needs serious work on her manners and overall obedience, as her excitement and curiosity can sometimes get the best of her. She’s also working through some leash reactivity and learning how to stay focused and calm around distractions. With structure, consistency, and clear guidance, Willow is on the right path to becoming a confident, well-mannered companion.

Today was Willow’s first day of training, and she’s off to a strong start. We began teaching her what leash pressure means and how to turn it off by making the correct choice.
She’s learning that light pressure isn’t something to resist or pull against — it’s guidance. When she moves in the direction of the pressure or softens into it, the pressure immediately releases. She’s already starting to understand that staying calm and making thoughtful decisions makes everything easier.
For day one, Willow showed good engagement and a willingness to learn. We kept the session simple and clear to build a solid foundation, and she handled it very well. Looking forward to continuing her progress tomorrow.

Willow had another great day of training and is progressing nicely. She’s bringing good energy to our sessions and staying engaged while we work.
Today we focused on developing her Heel, helping her understand positioning and encouraging consistent attention while moving. She’s starting to connect the dots and is showing improvement with each repetition.
We also worked on jumping up onto Place, building confidence and clarity with getting fully on and settling. She’s responding well and gaining more comfort and understanding as we go.
Overall, Willow is doing very well — she’s learning quickly and showing a lot of potential. Excited to continue building her skills tomorrow!

Today we worked on strengthening Willow’s core behaviors — Sit and Down — while carefully developing the three D’s: Distance, Duration, and Distraction.
Just like with any solid training foundation, it’s very important that these layers are built up properly and progressively. Rushing the process can create confusion or inconsistency, so we’re making sure she clearly understands each step before adding more challenge.
Willow is showing nice focus and steady improvement. We’re prioritizing clarity, consistency, and confidence so her behaviors remain reliable no matter the environment. Strong foundations now will set her up for long-term success.

Today’s focus with Willow was socialization, desensitization, and strengthening neutrality in high-distraction environments.
She was exposed to a variety of movement, noise, and environmental stimulation, with the goal of building calm awareness rather than engagement. Instead of reacting to everything around her, we worked on helping her slow down mentally and process her surroundings without needing to respond to them.
With structure and clear guidance, Willow is learning that distractions don’t require action. The emphasis was on maintaining composure, staying grounded, and making thoughtful choices even when the environment felt busy. Each exposure is designed to build confidence while reinforcing stability.
She’s making steady progress and showing improvement in her ability to regulate herself. This kind of foundation is crucial, and we’ll continue layering in distractions thoughtfully to strengthen her neutrality and overall mindset.

Willow’s training today unfolded in the heart of a busy outdoor shopping center — an energetic, unpredictable setting that offered countless real-world learning moments.
From the start, the outing functioned as one continuous training exercise. We navigated crowded walkways, paused near storefront entrances, and worked structured off-leash patterns through shifting pedestrian traffic. Every change in direction, every stop, and every new stimulus became part of the lesson.
She did encounter a few moments of challenge. Certain dogs passing at closer distances triggered brief reactivity, and at times her curiosity pulled her attention outward, allowing her mind to wander. Rather than viewing these as setbacks, we treated them as opportunities to reinforce clarity and accountability. With guidance, she was able to recover, re-engage, and continue working — which is where real growth happens.
Willow is very much a work in progress, but that progress is tangible. Her recovery time is shortening, her responses are becoming more thoughtful, and she’s beginning to understand that neutrality — even in stimulating environments — is the expectation. Today added another important layer to her development, and she continues moving in the right direction.

Willow spent this Valentine’s Day taking an important step forward as we began transitioning her into off-leash work. With each moment of added freedom, she’s learning to remain mentally present and connected, discovering that her guidance doesn’t disappear just because the leash does. She showed encouraging signs of maturity, making thoughtful choices and beginning to understand the responsibility that comes with that freedom.
Her confidence is growing in a steady, meaningful way, and you can see her starting to embrace this new level of trust. She’s learning to move with intention rather than impulse, strengthening both her focus and her partnership along the way. It was a beautiful progression for her today, and she sends lots of love your way this Valentine’s Day.

Willow took part in multiple off-leash sessions at the park today, giving her repeated opportunities to practice maintaining her composure and awareness within a distracting environment. With each session, she is gaining a clearer understanding of how to carry herself responsibly, and she is beginning to settle into the rhythm of the work with more consistency and intention.
She does still struggle when encountering dogs that display reactive behavior toward her, and in those moments her emotions can rise in response. By working through these situations across several sessions rather than a single exposure, she is being given the time and repetition needed to process those challenges and learn more appropriate, neutral responses. She is continuing to mature with the work, and her progress is building layer by layer.

Willow’s day brought a very honest look at one of her biggest sensitivities. What began as an attempt to practice door manners quickly shifted when the rain started hitting the porch, as the sound and movement of the water clearly made her uncomfortable. Rather than ignoring it, we used the moment as an introduction to desensitization work.
She remained uneasy for much of the exercise and did not settle very much, making it clear that this is something she genuinely dislikes. Her body language showed hesitation and resistance, and she was far more focused on the presence of the rain than on the doorway expectations themselves. That said, she was still able to exist in the space, observe it, and experience it without being forced beyond her limits, which is an important first step.
Earlier in the day, before the rain arrived, we also worked on her off-leash obedience. In those sessions, she showed a much better mindset—more willing to stay engaged and follow through with what was asked of her.
Today highlighted an area where she needs gradual, patient exposure. She isn’t comfortable with water yet, and that’s okay. Building neutrality here will take time and repetition, but now we have a clear starting point, and each small exposure will help chip away at that discomfort and replace it with confidence.

Our visit to Bass Pro Shops provided Willow with a valuable opportunity to work within a moderately distracting public environment. She showed encouraging composure overall, remaining increasingly responsive to guidance and demonstrating a stronger ability to stay mentally present despite the movement and noise around her.
While moments of reactivity still surfaced, they were noticeably more manageable, and she was able to recover and re-center herself with greater ease. This improved resilience reflects her growing understanding and emotional control. Willow continues to make meaningful progress, learning that she can navigate these busier spaces with calmness and clarity, and her confidence builds more with each exposure.

Willow is currently in the multi-day preparation phase for her “Final Video,” where the emphasis is on ensuring her behaviors remain consistent, clear, and reliable. This stage is about confirming her understanding and helping her perform with confidence and stability, especially in public environments where expectations are higher.
She has been showing good awareness and responsiveness, demonstrating that she understands her role and can carry herself appropriately within structured expectations. Her ability to settle, re-engage, and remain accountable continues to improve as we move through this process.
It’s important to note that when she returns home, fully off-leash freedom in public is not recommended at this time. Willow still exhibits occasional reactive behavior in certain situations, and maintaining leash accountability will be necessary to keep her, the public, and other dogs safe. This structure will also help preserve her progress and prevent her from rehearsing unwanted behaviors.
Willow is capable and has made meaningful progress, and with proper handling and continued guidance, she will be well positioned for continued success.

With the storm keeping us inside again today, we dedicated our time to working on Willow’s food manners, focusing on patience and reinforcing calm decision-making around her meals. This can be a challenging exercise for dogs who feel strongly about their food, but Willow approached the work with growing understanding.
She’s learning that composure and self-control are what open the door to rewards. While she still has moments where her anticipation shows, she’s beginning to pause, think, and look for direction rather than acting immediately. Each repetition is helping her develop better impulse control and a more thoughtful response.
Despite the restless energy that often comes with stormy weather, Willow stayed engaged and made meaningful progress. These lessons play a big role in her overall stability and respect for boundaries, and she continues to build that foundation.

Willow enjoyed the beautiful weather today, and it showed in her work. She’s becoming more comfortable, more confident, and more responsive with each passing day.
With only two days of training left, she’s really starting to put everything together. Her understanding is clearer, her decision-making is improving, and she’s showing us more of the dog she’s capable of being.
We’re not finished yet, but Willow is finishing strong, and I’m excited to show everyone where she’ll be at the end of her program.

Today was Willow’s last day of training—such a big win! She is heading home tomorrow, and we’re incredibly proud of how much our girl has learned.
She nailed off-leash walking and obedience in her final sessions: reliable recalls with distractions, steady heel work off-leash, solid sits/downs/stays even around people and other dogs, and calm handling of surprises like skateboards and running kids.
We wrapped up with relaxed park practice—lots of praise, play breaks, and she showed off her skills confidently to a few other dogs and owners.
She’s more focused, responsive, and settled than ever. Huge progress in just weeks—she’s ready to bring it all home.
So proud of you, Willow. You crushed it, sweet girl.
