Sammy | Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua mix | Long Beach, CA | In-Training

Meet Sammy! He is a 4-year-old Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix from Long Beach, CA. He will be joining us for our Two Week Board and Train Program. Sammy takes a little time to warm up, but once he does, he’s very loving and loyal. Areas of concern from Sammy’s parents that they would like to be addressed are potty training, his lack of confidence, reactivity toward other dogs, excessive barking, leash obedience, house obedience, and crate training. Stay tuned for his 14-day transformation!

Today's session was our first session together. This allowed me to get to know Sammy and understand him. Sammy was a little hesitant to interact with me at first but quickly warmed up. This training session focused on bonding, gaining Sammy’s trust, and learning the Come to sit command. I was really happy to see Sammy start to show his playful side. Definitely a successful first day!

One of today’s sessions took place at Home Depot. It was a great opportunity to see how Sammy would react to the environmental factors of many different people, dogs, smells, and loud noises. Sammy expressed fear in the beginning of our session but overcame the fear shortly after training began. It was great to see his confidence build and him doing well in training. We worked on the Come to sit command, Sit command, and Extended sit command. As we trained, he continued to get more comfortable and confident. A great second day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at a new park. Sammy presented with fear and anxiety on arrival. After encouraging him to explore, his fear quickly turned into playfulness and excitement. In this session, we continued building his confidence and his understanding of the Come to sit and Extended sit commands. Today I believe we had a breakthrough! Since meeting Sammy, I’ve never seen him play and show me affection like he did today. He acted like a young pup without a care in the world. I’m excited to see Sammy grow and build the confidence to take on the world! Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at the park. I wanted to build Sammy’s confidence more today by having him placing on many different objects with many different textures. He did well overcoming his fears. We also continued to build a strong foundation in the Come to sit, Place, Down, and Heel commands. He is showing great progress the more we train. We have also been working on potty training and I am happy to share he has gone 2 days without any potty accidents! Sammy did really well today and had another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at a brand new park. There were a lot of distractions such as people, dogs, and soccer practices! We focused on building confidence and the commands Come to sit, Sit, Down, Place, and Heel completely off-leash. Sammy had no issues with the commands and I can see his confidence building daily! Potty training is going really well as it is day 3 of no potty accidents! Another great training day!

One of today’s sessions took place at Glendale Galleria. It was full of people and dogs making it an ideal location for training. Sammy had quite a bit of anxiety to overcome, but nonetheless did! During this session, we focused on getting good repetitions in the Come to sit, Sit, Down, Heel, and Place commands. The high environmental distractions brought a whole new dynamic to this session which really benefited Sammy’s growth. Another great training day!

One of today’s sessions took place at Home Depot. During this session, we continued to focus on Come to sit, Sit, Down, Heel, and Place commands. We also worked on car and greeting manners. Potty training is also going very well with day 4 of no potty accidents. Sammy has a little trouble with the loud noises, but we are working through that daily. Sammy continues to grow and comes more out of his shell day by day. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at a new park. The park had many new distractions such as Ducks, Goats, people, and Dogs. In this session, I brought in another dog for Sammy to interact with. Sammy can be fearful of other dogs, so I wanted to use this opportunity to show Sammy how to make friends and have fun with other dogs. I challenged him by switching back and forth from playtime to obedience training. We also worked on his greeting manners when people approached him asking to pet him. It was a good opportunity for Sammy to feel more confident interacting with new people. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place in a new park. New people, dogs, and a baseball game provided plenty of distractions. I want to continue to introduce new distractions to Sammy to prepare him to overcome any he may face in the future. Today Sammy’s fear of his environment was a bit of a challenge. I see it as a positive because we were able to work through it with patience, compassion, and repetition. The first part of the session was on-leash because I can see when Sammy is getting overwhelmed. After he begins to feel comfortable, we were able to finish the training off-leash. Also, potty training is going very well. Sammy is consistently waiting to go outside for potty breaks. No potty accidents today! He had another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at Home Depot. We worked on the commands Sit, Come to Sit, Down, and Heel. We also worked on Greeting and Car manners. Sammy was a lot more comfortable today and was able to train completely off-leash without issue. I’ve discovered that if we perform confidence-building exercises prior to training, he seems to be a different pup. With that knowledge, I will use confidence-building exercises as a “warm-up” moving forward. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at a new Lowes location. We worked on the commands Sit, Come to Sit, Down, Heel, Extended sit, and Extended down completely off-leash. We also worked on Greeting manners, Car manners, Food manners, and House manners. Sammy got spooked a few times from random loud noises thus breaking the command. We used those situations as opportunities to train and have fun around those noises. Shortly after, Sammy was able to continue training without seeming bothered by the random loud noises. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at a new park location. We worked on the commands Sit, Come to Sit, Down, Heel, Extended sit, and Extended down completely off-leash. We also worked on Greeting manners, Car manners, Food manners, and House manners. Sammy did really well not reacting to the other dogs around. There were times they approached him, but he stayed in engaged with me and our training. I also had another individual work with Sammy for a short period of time to help build his trust and confidence in those he may not have such a strong bond with. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at the Santa Monica Pier. We worked on the commands Sit, Come to Sit, Down, Heel, Extended sit, and Extended down completely off-leash. We also worked on Greeting manners, Car manners, Food manners, and House manners. Sammy was exposed to a lot more people than in our previous sessions. I was really pleased to see him fight through his anxiety and train. There were a few times he broke command after random loud noises, but nothing he couldn’t overcome. Another great day of training!

One of today’s sessions took place at Lowes. We worked on the commands Sit, Come to Sit, Down, Heel, Extended sit, and Extended down completely off-leash. We really pushed Sammy’s limits by putting him in an extended sit or down command, then creating lots of distance. His anxiety was present, but the more we practiced, the more comfortable he became. It was a massive win for us when I was able to go to the other side of the aisle and back without him breaking the command. His confidence continues to increase daily. Another great day of training!
