Romeo | Labrador Retriever | Santa Monica, CA | In Training

Updated: Feb 16

Romeo, a five month old Labrador Retriever, has joined Offleash SoCal for our two week board and train program. This sweet boy is very energetic and loves playing fetch. He loves people and dogs, but doesn’t know how to properly greet when meeting for the first time. Over the two weeks he will be working on obedience, leash pulling, and greeting manners. Check our Romeo’s progress over the next two weeks.

Romeo practicing a few commands today: come, sit, down and place. Even his friends Pippi and Bailey joined in on the training sessions. I used his tennis ball addiction to my advantage. Romeo had sit while I bounced the ball around him until I released him to fetch it. It wasn’t easy for him but he figured out he wouldn’t get the ball unless he did what i said. I noticed he inhales his food so I’m making Romeo eat out of a slow feeder bowl.

Romeo working on the down command this morning. Heel command is a work in progress but he is doing better, not pulling on the leash as much. Later on in the evening we went back to the park to work on the place command. Place is where Romeo has to get onto an object, other than the floor, and sit. This command is a great confidence builder for dogs. It can be scary dogs when trying different objects with different textures, sizes, or heights. The bleacher seats were a little tricky for Romeo, at first because it was a bit slippery, but once he realized he was fine he hopped on and off of it with no problem.

Romeo working the down command with duration, staying in the command for a certain amount of time until I release him. It‘s a little hard for him to sit or lay still without him whining and trying to get up, but he’s getting the hang of it. He is doing great with the heel command! I noticed he doesn’t really like skateboards, so that will be distraction we will continue to work with until he realizes the skateboard isn’t a big deal.

Today Romeo and I went to Lowe‘s, while it was raining, to work on commands with mild distractions. This was his first time being off leash and he did awesome! We walked around through all the aisles, walking past people, and stayed with me the entire time. Romeo had some fun trying new and different place objects.

Today Romeo and Walker joined on a shopping spree at The Outlets at Orange. Romeo is doing great offleash! He obeys every command, even though he whines and complains to me that he doesn’t want to. He is improving on his greeting manners. It is not 100% yet, sometimes he can’t help himself and gets too excited that he wants to jump up, but he will get there.

Romeo‘s last day of training! Today we went back to Huntington Beach to do some more off leash work. You would think he would be tired after being out all day, but no, the first thing he did when we got home was grab his tennis ball and put right at my feet, waiting for me to throw it. Romeo has done an amazing job over the last 2 weeks! He can‘t wait to go home and show everyone what he has learned!
