Paris | American Bulldog | Gardena, California | In-Training

Meet Paris! She’s a 7 month old American Bulldog from Gardena, California. Paris is here for our Two Week Board and Train Program because she pulls on the leash, barks at things she not sure of, eats things she shouldn’t, and doesn’t know her basic commands. Paris is a very sweet, beautiful, goofy pup! Stay tuned for her fourteen day transformation!

Paris was just as nervous getting out of the crate as she was going into it, and had a bit of diarrhea when she exited the crate in the van. I let her meet the other dogs, and the drool hanging from her mouth told me she was a little stressed out. Loki the husky tried to get her to play, but she isn't ready yet. We walked back and forth on the driveway and did some long-line work so she could start learning to turn in the direction of the pressure to release it. The more we repeated the exercise, the less resistant she became. She struggled with going into her crate inside the house, but the blanket from home combined with leash pressure, and a lot of patience, got her through it! She did not eat, and may just need time to decompress from all this change in her world.

Paris and I worked on e-collar conditioning at a park. I found the level at which she responds to the stimulation and will move towards me and used this to teach her recall. I do this by holding down the button, and with the long line, direct her with leash pressure back towards me. When she turns in my direction I mark with "good" while praising and encouraging her to continue moving in my direction. We also worked on come to sit, where she walks around my back to sit at my left side in the heel position. Paris did great once she understood what the stimulation meant - to come to her handler! In the morning during socialization the husky puppy tried to get her to play but she didn’t want to and got in a scuffle with him. She has some bumps on her head but nothing major. I also noticed some bumps on her leg, stomach, and around her rear end. It looks like an allergic reaction, and can send photos separately in an email. If she’s able to have Benadryl I can give her that to see if it improves.

This morning I used Paris' breakfast to introduce and reinforce place, down, come to sit, and break. I used leash pressure as well as the e-collar to help her go to place and get into the down position. When she broke her down stay, I would say no and tap the button on the collar while helping her get back on place with the leash. Her release from any position is break. We also worked on door boundaries and food manners. Paris no longer has trouble going into the crate, but it took us several attempts to get door boundaries right. As I mentioned in my email, I did find stuffing in her stool (likely from a toy), but it has since normalized, and she's eating and drinking as she should. The bumps are still on her legs and stomach area, but I'll give another round of Benadryl and see if that helps.

Paris and I worked at a park around birds, which she found very distracting, but the longer we worked the more impulse control she showed. We did nails today, and although Paris wasn’t the biggest fan, she did eventually stop pulling away and started to relax.

Paris and I focused on her come to sit and recall today. She’s a very sweet but big clumsy puppy, and teaching come to sit around the back was resulting in her knocking into my legs one too many time. Today I focused on luring her into the come to sit position using high value treats. She was very attentive, and I believe this is working better than around the back. We also did some loose leash heel work, but she veers off every now and then so we’ll work on more of this with praise for being in the heel position.

Paris and I worked her commands at an outdoor mall in Irvine. She found people quite distracting and wanted to say hello to all of them. Several people complimented on how big and beautiful she was, and someone even asked if she was a working dog while I had her in a duration down. Today gave me a better idea of what we need to focus on to be fully off-leash.

Paris and I worked on her duration down, come to sit, and recall on the property. Then we met up with a client who has a small dog to work Paris around him. She struggles a little with her duration down, but we're working on it!

Paris and I worked on loose leash walking and her obedience at an outdoor mall. She is downing on cue and doing a better job of holding her down. We practiced greeting manners when a woman wanted to come greet her, and Paris held her sit and politely let the woman pet her. The heat really slows her down so we try to stick to the shade. The long line allows me to help guide her when she still needs directional help, as well as the curb as a barrier when getting her to sit straighter. Overall she’s doing a great job!

Paris and I worked on her come to sit, down, and loose leash walking at an outdoor mall. She did really well focusing on me, but still needs more work on her come to sit. Paris is definitely more attentive than when we started and really enjoys training especially when she’s rewarded with treats! We did nails today, and she got Benadryl in the morning and afternoon to help with the redness and bumps. In the afternoon she socialized in the yard with Juno.

Today we went to another outdoor mall to practice off-leash heeling. We went inside a few stores, and Paris did very well greeting people while seated. When we returned to the property we worked on our off-leash turns, come to sit, duration down, and place. Things are starting to come together! You can see the wheels turning in her head and she’s really thinking.

Paris and I worked on loose leash walking in public, greeting manners, sits, and down. She is walking nicely on leash but occasionally tries to say hello to someone passing by. Several people commented on how beautiful and smart she is while Paris held a duration down. She’s doing well in her training!

Paris and I worked on her commands at a park while kids were playing on the playground equipment behind us and a soccer scrimmage was going on in front of us. Paris did a really good job of focusing on her handler while performing all of her commands. She only broke her down stay once! Paris is less impulsive than when I met her and able to follow directions much better.

Paris and I worked on her final video to showcase what she’s learned these past two weeks. She did really well around the other dogs and completed all of her commands! It’s been a pleasure seeing her transform from a goofy pup that couldn’t focus to a goofy pup that can focus and follow directions.

Paris and I worked on her commands at the skate park. When I met her she wasn’t a big fan of skateboards so I wanted to proof her impulse control around her trigger. She did get a little aroused but we worked through it and she was able to show good control.
