Jonnie | German Shorthaired Pointer | Torrance, California | In Training

Jonnie is a one year old German Shorthaired Pointer from Torrance, CA. She's joining us for our Two-Week Board and Train program. She has issues with pulling, following basic commands, jumping, and her parents have experienced some reactivity to other dogs. Stay tuned to see Jonnie's fourteen day transformation!

After I picked up Jonnie, we went to Anthony Munoz Park to start training!

She's very nervous around people and animals but she maintained composure to some degree. We worked on her Heel and Sit commands today. She's doing well with Sit, but having a little more trouble with Heel. For this command, I want her to walk on my left side with her ears at my knee. Not bad for her first day of training!

After the park we went back home and I let her get used to being in my residence, and we bonded a little bit!

Jonnie went to Almansor Park today for training! She worked hard and had a lot of fun too! Her Heel is getting better, and I introduced her to a new command: Come To Sit! She's doing well overall, however, you'll notice in the above video she is very easily distracted by the geese! She never tried to pull toward them or chase them, but a lot of her attention is on other animals if they're nearby. I'll be sure to have her around lots of different critters to get her the exposure she needs.

She is also not a huge fan of sleeping in her kennel. She seems to be getting more used to it, but we will see how she does tonight!

Jonnie and I went to Legg Lake for training today! She's getting very good with the commands she's learned so far. Today, we worked on the Place command! For this one, I want Jonnie to hop up onto an object and hold her position there. As you can see in the pictures above, she picked up on this command fairly well! You can also use this command inside your home and have the "place" be her bed!

In addition to training, I took Jonnie on a light jog to get a little bit more energy out. Hopefully this will help her sleep better tonight!

Jonnie and I went to Glendale Galleria today! She was very nervous in this new environment, as there were far more people and noises than the places we've gone. That being said, she still did a really good job with everything! I also started working on Jonnie's Down command!

Jonnie slept much better last night after I took her running! So I'm going to continue to do that each day.

Jonnie went to Citadel Outlets today! She worked on all of her commands around a few other pups, and she did very well! She did not react to the dogs and maintained composure. She did, however, express some interest in some birds flying around.

Jonnie went to the Block of Orange today for training! She's still a bit nervous with all the distractions, but she's definitely improving! I noticed Jonnie doesn't like laying down on raised objects, so in today's video, I asked her to do exactly that. She gets up a couple times, but overall she did a good job! Doing this should help build her confidence, both with this issue, and in general!

Jonnie went to Downtown Brea today! She's been doing all of her commands very well, although she did roll over a couple times today and not want want to continue! When she does this, I give her a light tug on the leash along side a stimulation with the E collar to get her moving in the right direction. We also spent some more time having her lay down on a place object. She seems to be gaining confidence with this, so I think we're heading in the right direction! Another area where she's getting better is sleeping in her kennel! Last night she went to sleep fairly quickly and didn't make a peep for most of the night.

Jonnie went to Almansor Park today for training! I started having her go through her commands with the leash dragging. This is to see how she might do off leash, while still having the leash attached just in case I need it.

I asked her to Place on a bleacher, which she didn't like at first, so I needed to grab her leash to help her along, but she eventually started getting the hang of it! This was her toughest Place yet, and since she got this one, I think she can handle Placing on any bench!

Jonnie went to Wilderness Park today! There were tons of geese and ducks around the area, so she had plenty of distractions. She still focused a little to much on the geese for the first little while, but pretty soon she was walking by groups of geese without paying attention to them!

Based on Jonnie's performance today and yesterday with her leash dragging, I think she'll be ready to work off leash tomorrow. Check back tomorrow to see how she does!

Jonnie was off leash at Almansor Park today! She performed all of her commands very well off leash, and seems to be gaining quite a bit of confidence! She seems much less nervous being out in the world than she was at first. At one point in the above video, you can see Jonnie look away at some ducks just to the right of the camera, but she manages to hold her position until I release her!

Jonnie went to Home Depot today for training! She was very nervous at first, but eventually loosened up. She was able to perform all of her commands consistently, though! The main issue we ran into today was when I asked Jonnie to Place on the push cart. It was a bit wobbly, and Jonnie did not like that at all. After a little encouragement and a few tries, she managed to hold her position on it for a decent amount of time! Long enough for me to snap the picture above, at least!

Jonnie went to Citadel Outlets today!

She was kind of nervous, but she did a great job overall! For her Pupdate today, I wanted to showcase her food manners and her door manners! She is doing a great job with both. She lunges forward at the beginning, but corrects herself and remains seated for the most part! When she makes a mistake like this, I use a verbal correction, as well as a light stimulation to remind her where she is supposed to be!

Jonnie went to the Santa Monica Promenade today! She is great with her commands, even in relatively busy areas like the Promenade today, or Citadel Outlets yesterday. Her main issue today was holding her position for an extended period of time, so that's definitely something I'll work on tomorrow. For the Down, Sit and Place commands, I want her to be able to hold those positions for at least two minutes. Ideally, if we stay vigilant with her commands, she will be able to hold each position indefinitely, but for now, two minutes is the goal!

Today's my last full day with Jonnie! We went to Almansor Park for training. For today's pupdate, I wanted to show some more manners that we've been working on! For car manners, I want Jonnie to sit and wait as I open up the car, and then hop in and walk straight into her kennel when asked. For greeting manners, I want Jonnie to sit when being greeted by a stranger without pulling toward them or jumping on them!

Jonnie's been really great to work with over these two weeks, and I believe she's come a long way! I'll miss working with her each day.
