Teddy | Great Pyrenees | Rancho Palos Verdes, CA | In-Training

Teddy, a one year old Great Pyrenees, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Board and Train Program. Teddy comes to us knowing some commands. He is easily distracted and can be very stubborn. Teddy’s owners are having trouble with him being protective, barking and growling at people that come to the house. It is hard for them to take him for a walk because he is reactive towards dogs, people, and cars. Over the three weeks Teddy will be working towards his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress.

Teddy is getting settled in at my home. He is a bit nervous, but is slowly warming up to me. He got to see the other dogs through their kennels. Teddy didn’t react or try going after them. I’m going to let him get adjusted to his new surroundings today. We will begin his training tomorrow. Above is a tutorial video of the E-collar. I didn’t send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need to become familiar with the training collar.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his commands. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. Teddy knows his sit and down commands, but was stubborn at times and tried to not follow them. I made sure that he followed through with  each command. Place is a command where Teddy must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for building confidence, working on duration, and teaching Teddy to be calm and relaxed. He did pretty well and caught on to his new command quickly. There were a few other dogs that were at the park with us. Teddy noticed them but wasn’t reactive. Teddy did a great job on his first day of training.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, and Place commands. We also worked on Heel. Heel is a structured walk where Teddy must be at my side. He’s not allowed to put his nose to the ground or focus on other distractions. His job is to be at my left side and focus on me and where I am walking. He tried leading ahead in the beginning, but as we practiced his turns, Teddy realized he needed to slow down and be at my pace so he can see where I am going. Teddy got to meet one of his training buddies today. He did really well. He didn’t try to lunge or bark at her. When trying to introduce them, Teddy wasn’t that interested. I had them walk together and let them hang out at the park. They didn’t play, but Teddy was able to be social and followed the other dog around. He ended up making a new friend today.

Today Teddy and I trained at home. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, Heel and Place commands, but worked mostly on his socialization. One by one I introduced Teddy to each of the pack members. He was a bit nervous and overwhelmed with all the dogs that were around him. He wasn’t interested in playing, but okay with being around them. The only dog he wanted to play with was his buddy, Lily, the white shepherd he met yesterday. Teddy preferred to hangout with her and enjoyed running around and being chased by Lily. Teddy did an awesome job today!

Today Teddy and I trained at Lowe’s to work out of the heat and practice his commands around distractions. Teddy did pretty well inside the store. We walked past customers and employees with no issues. There was a woman that approached us and was admiring him. Teddy stayed in the down position and was calm as the woman talked to us. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He was a little stubborn with his Come command, but we will continue to practice. Teddy continues to do well with the other dogs. He is a little sad his play mate went home, but is enjoying the company of the other dogs.

Today Teddy and I went to a local shopping center to work on his obedience around more distractions. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. Teddy did very well today. He stayed focused and followed all of his commands. He did much better with Come. At home, he continues to to well with the other dogs. He hasn’t warmed up to them as much like he did with friend, Lily, but is okay being around them.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Teddy could practice around other dog distractions. He wasn’t reactive. He didn’t try to lunge or bark at them. Teddy was actually interested and did well greeting them. He did well training around the other dogs, ignoring them and staying focused on me. He was a little stubborn with me though. He tried to put up a fight a few times when he didn’t want to follow commands, but I made sure that he followed through with them.

Today Teddy and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands. We mostly worked on his recall (come) since he tends to be more stubborn with this one. He put up a little struggle in the beginning, but after some repetition Teddy gave up resisting and started following through with the command. We worked on his distance and duration. He does well holding his commands for a period of time. We need more work on distance. If I move too far away (about 10 steps away), Teddy tries to break to get close to me. We will continue to practice and improve.

Today Teddy and I went to the outdoor mall to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little nervous when we first arrived, which made it hard for him to focus. As we walked around and trained Teddy was able to settle down and focus. Once he was comfortable with his surroundings, we were able to do some semi-off leash training. I let him drag the leash as we worked. We had a little struggle with the down command, but after some repetition Teddy started to listen and follow through.

Today Teddy and I trained at home. We practiced all of his commands. He is a very smart boy and knows all his commands, but can be very stubborn when he doesn’t want to listen. He was being difficult with his recall, trying to walk away or not come to me when called. We did a lot of repetition on come until he started to follow through without any resistance. We also worked on send away place. This is where I tell Teddy to go to a place object at a distance. At first, it was a little tricky for him, but after some repetition Teddy started getting the hang of it.

Today Teddy and I went to Lowe’s to train out of the heat and work on his obedience around distractions. We did more leash dragging today. I focused more on Teddy cleaning up his commands. Teddy can be a little sloppy when doing his commands. One example, instead of sitting right next to me, he tries to turn sideways to face me. He does a great job heeling at my side. We practiced more on send away to place. Once we tighten up his commands Teddy will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his commands. He was a good boy today and followed all of his commands. We practiced more semi-off leash. Teddy is getting better with distance. I am able to get about 15 steps away from him without him trying to break command to get close to me. We came across other dogs while at the park. Teddy was a good boy and ignored them as we heeled past.

Today Teddy and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. He was a little stubborn at first.  After some repetition he finally started following his commands without a struggle. Teddy is doing very well with all the other dogs at my home. He is running around and being playful with them all.

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Teddy could practice around more dog distractions. I also had one of the other trainers work with Teddy. He responded really well to the other trainer and followed all his commands. Teddy also trained completely off leash with me.

Today Teddy and I went to the mall to work on his obedience around distractions. He did a great job! Teddy worked completely off leash! We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He did very well with all the people distractions. We had quite a few people that gave Teddy compliments on how well behaved he is.

Pupdate 8/7/2024

Today Teddy joined me on a little shopping spree at the outdoor mall. We practiced all his commands off leash and worked on his distance and duration. Teddy did a good job staying focused and following all his commands.

Pupdate 8/8/2024

Today Teddy and I trained at home. We worked on his food and door manners. For food manners, Teddy must wait patiently until given permission to eat. Just because the food is on the floor does not mean it belongs to him. This will help him develop self-control and discipline. It can also help prevent behavioral issues that can arise, such as begging, food guarding, and stealing. For door manners, Teddy must wait at thresholds until given permission to pass. This teaches Teddy impulse control, creates calmness before going for a walk, and ensures safety to not bolt through the door.

Pupdate 8/9/2024

Today Teddy and I did some training at home. We worked more on his door and food manners. We mostly worked on his socialization today. We have 2 new friends that came to the house to play. Through the kennel Teddy likes to pretend to be mean and scary. Once I took him out he is shy and timid. He wasn’t interested in playing, but was a good boy and was able to socialize with the other dogs.

Pupdate 8/10/2024

Today Teddy and I went to the park to work on commands. We worked on a new one, Under. Under is similar to the Place command, but instead of climbing on top of an object Teddy must go under an object. This command is great if you take him out to eat with you and you need him out of the walk way. You can ask Teddy to go under a table or chair. Teddy did very well and caught on to the new command quickly.

Pupdate 8/11/2024

Today Teddy joined me on a little shopping trip at the outdoor mall. We practiced all his commands off leash and worked on his duration and distance. It was pretty busy, so we had plenty of people distractions to work around. Teddy did a great job! He was a good boy and followed all his commands. He received a few compliments from people on how handsome and well mannered he is.

Pupdate 8/12/2024

Today Teddy took the day off from training and spent the day socializing and playing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I had the groomer come to give him a bath so he could be nice and clean when he sees you. We went to the park for some fun. Teddy got to run around and explore off leash. I am very proud of Teddy and the progress he has made over the three weeks. He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
