This is Steve, a Doberman Pinscher from Sherman Oaks. He is here for our two week board and train program. Steve is a sweet boy but needs help on socialization as he tends to bark at strangers. He also pulls on the leash very hard and he has selective hearing. Over the next two weeks, Steve will learn basic and fundamental commands to be the best he can be so stay tuned for his PAWSOME transformation!

Today I was transferred Steve the Doberman from Katie. She’s done a great job with his commands. I am just coming in to help with some of his reactivity issues. Today was more of an evaluation day and introduction into my home. He got to meet my bengal cat Gimli and he did much better than expected. Tomorrow we will kick things into gear so that we can get Steve home as soon as possible. I look forward to working with him and making him the best dog he can be!

Today Steve and I did a little bit of training in a few places. Around the neighborhood, some and the Fashion Island in Newport Beach and in Burbank. Steve has a lot of anxiety and reactivity with unexpected things coming into his line of sight. I am teaching him not to react with things especially those that don’t in any way has a physical affect on him. He got to see some of the Long Beach marathoners running by our house and he did really well with and occasional whine hear and there. I look forward to what the next few days bring.

Today Steve and I went to the local park. We did most of our commands away from all the action but enough for him to see some dogs running around. Towards the end of our training session we got closer to the action and it was a little more than what Steve could comfortably handle. We will continue working on his reactivity issues to see if we can get him to overcome them. I am hopeful we can!

Today Steve and I went to Mile Square park in Fountain Valley. We worked on her commands (sit, down, come and heel). The other and main focus of our training was to work with Steve closer to another dog. Thankfully I had Alyssa (trainer) there to help me out with providing another dog to work around. I introduced Steve to a tug to play with and to reward for performing commands. He liked it and spent some energy which are two great things for a dog like Steve. By the end of our session he was working really well.

Today Steve and I trained up in Santa Clarita. We used my parents back yard as our training location today. We also used my parents dogs as Steve’s dog distractions today. He did really well and I was even able to drop his leash for a little heeling today. I am extremely happy with his session today. On top of that he had some controlled free time with my cat and he got to play with the flirt pole to burn some of his energy. Still have to work at his barking at people when traveling in the crate. Overall it was a solid day!

Today Steve and I were working back in Santa Clarita. This time around my parents neighborhood. His biggest distraction is dogs walking on leash. So we worked with my brother and his dog. He did really well but got anxious when he finally saw the other dog walking. Either way he was able to calm down quicker than normal, which is a big improvement! I am glad with his performance today and will look forward to his improvement in the coming days.

Today Steve and I worked down at Balboa Lake in Van Nuys. He got to work around another dog and he did well overall. Then we went up to Agua Dulce and did some work at a ranch with obstacles to build confidence and even got to work around two more dogs. He did great, but still has to get more comfortable working around other dogs. I look forward to seeing him progress over the next week.

Today Steve and I worked in Santa Clarita. Today’s focus was working on his commands in a less distracting environment. He is a great dog with a lot of energy and some anxiety. As long as you spend some of his energy and keep him engaged in training he can do really well! I will spend the next week coupling his behavior modification exercises with his commands to take him as far as I possibly can.

Today Steve and I worked more on his commands. It’s really starting to click for him. On our walk we encountered another person walking a dog and he got anxious but it was very minimal. He also saw a cat run across the street which made him whine more and took a little longer to get him to calm back down. Good solid exercise helps his anxiety a lot! Which showed in our training session today. We used a flirt pole to burn the energy and then got into our training session. We will continue to push the envelop the rest of this week.

Today Steve and I trained at Recreation Park in Long Beach. We had some hiccups the last time we were there so I wanted to see how far he came along in the past week. He improved more than I thought and didn’t allow the doggy distractions to make him lose too much focus. I am really happy with how he did. Still got a few more days to get him even better. Keep an eye on his continued transformation.

Today Steve and I worked down at Marine Park in Long Beach. Overall, he worked great. The park provided a couple different types of distractions. One dog provided the biggest distraction and it took Steve a little bit to calm down. Although he did calm down quicker than I have seen in the past with that same level of excitement. He is a young dog that will strive with needed structure and physical exercise!

Steve and I worked at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa. The distractions were plentiful but nothing too overbearing for him. Steve has come a long ways, but still can go even further. His response to the e-collar is better,
but sometime it requires a higher stimulation to get his attention back on me. It’s coming fewer and farther between, but I am still working to make it perfectly clear to him. As we come down the homestretch I will make it a little more challenging for him but still keep him in positions to succeed!

Today Steve and I went and worked down at El Dorado Duck Park in Long Beach. In low level distractions (predominantly meaning no or few dogs) he can keep his focus well, for the most part. I am doing more off leash with him as we build the trust up in our relationship. He is still working his hardest to be obedient but allows his mind to wander from time to time. He’s a young dog but full of so much potential.

Steve and I got some great work in today. Thanks to Katie and Reine for providing my dog distractions today. Steve did pretty well for the most part. There was a time where he got really whiney with a dog who ran by with his owner. He did eventually calm back down and focus. Overall it was a great session, but there is still room for improvement.

Today Steve and I worked on his basic commands. He still got distracted by smaller dogs but eventually was able to a calm down. He has had major improvement but still needs some structured training to take him to the next level. Steve has been a great student that is ready to go to the next level.
