Welcome Shelby joining our pack for another world famous Two Week Board and Train Program. Shelby has had some previous training so he knows sit and other treat motivated commands. Shelby has been allowed to "choose" what he wants to do and when he wants to do it. Shelby is very sweet, but stubborn all at the same time. Stay tuned to watch Shelby develop into an obedient pup when the owners need him to be.

So difficult getting work done at the desk with not one, but two under foot!!! They work hard, play hard, sleep hard together.

The boys can never get enough fun time. This time it is Oso's blanket that became the object of both of their interest.

Hi Kim and Gary,
Wanted to touch on something that we discussed previously. You had sent Shelby with a towel for the understanding that he would learn place, and subsequently learn to place on the towel, and then on the couch (that Shelby currently chooses to sit on). I've considered this for a few days now and I'm leaning towards having more strict boundaries, rather than allowing for more fun behavior from Shel. Shelby continues to choose to do what he wants rather than following directions 100% (or close) of the time. I'd like to take away the things that Shelby likes, the couch as an example, and offer him the floor instead. He can earn the couch back when his behaviors become better overall. It will teach Shelby that he doesn't have the "right" to do what he wants when he wants.
Now, I understand for a lot of my clients this is way too much. I completely understand. I'm only offering suggestions. You are certainly free to do what you want with your dog. I'm only suggesting that Shelby behaves the way he does because he is allowed to. He can be bratty because he is allowed to. He doesn't always listen because he is allowed to. He gets free love and attention so he doesn't have to earn it. All of these contribute to the behaviors and obedience that you get from Shelby. I'm happy to jump on a call to discuss further if you would like.

While the cat in the video was a huge distraction, it is fair to say a more subtle, and seemingly larger distraction is Shelby's nose. He gets a scent and NEEDS to identify it. Problem lies in that he doesn't get to do that while in command anymore. No more smelling the grass, roses, curb, under the table, etc. If the command is heel then we are walking and we aren't stopping until I say sit, down or release from command, Break. Shelby gets in more trouble by following his nose instead of following the handlers commands.

Walked outside to get Shelby to go for a walk and saw this...

The boys went on a 5.6 mile walk/hike today. At the top of the hill the view overlooks Hacienda Country Club.

Home Depot today for some more off leash work. Shelby isn't a fan about "placing" on objects larger than him. This took multiple tries.

Shelby was able to walk onto the mulch bags so this is okay...that is a sit by the way...just looks like he is clinging to a life raft in the middle of the ocean.

Working on distractions of sound and sights in downtown Los Angeles. Skateboards, cars, bikes are all triggers for Shelby. Working Shelby this close to the boards allows him to become less sensitive to those distractions.

Cause we can't ALWAYS be working, some time to play with our new friend Saber. Saber is a female, seven month old, Doodle. Shelby was VERY gentle with Saber who isn't well socialized and doesn't normally play well with others. Great job Shelby!!!!!

Just another day at the beach for Shelby! There is a point where a man walks up to Shelby and asks to pet him and I say no. Shelby didn't really understand that he DOESN'T have to greet everyone under the sun, lol.
I will point out one of the challenges with Shelby is his potty training in public. Shelby doesn't always identify that he needs to go potty until it is happening. Additionally, while on leash, in heel, he will start to poop. It then trails behind making it difficult to pick up. I would highly recommend starting to potty train him again when you get him back (hear me out). Keeping Shelby in a crate (hard surface) when you aren't with him, or overnight, will allow you to control where and when he is pooping. Taking him out on a leash to the same location (literally EVERY time) and asking him to "go potty" until he does will teach him to go on command. Once he understands that you want him to poop when you say "go potty", he will more consistently. You then can take him more places without having to be concerned with when and where he is pooping. Ever notice a service animal (legit guide dog for a blind person) almost never goes in public? This is because the handler asks that the animal go BEFORE embarking on that days adventure. Blind person in a mall has the guide dog poop in Nordstrom- NEVER! Shelby has that potential as well.
