Sage | Golden Retriever | Long Beach, CA | In Training

Meet Sage! She's an eleven-month-old Golden Retriever from Long Beach, California here for our Two-Week Board and Train program! Sage has issues with pulling on her leash, play biting, jumping on people, following basic commands. I'll be working with her on her obedience, and how to properly greet people and other dogs! Stay tuned for Sage's fourteen day transformation!

After I picked up Sage, we went to a park near my house. She seems to like me a lot! We just played around in the park for a while so we could get to know each other, then went back home where I let her sniff around my house. I gave her belly rubs and tried to get her used to being around me. She seems to be pretty happy here so far!

Sage went to Hacienda Park today for her first full day of training! We started working on her Heel command. She is definitely quite the jumper, and she likes to start jumping on me whenever she is either excited or doesn't want to do any more work. Eventually she calmed down a little, and her Heel is actually getting pretty good when she isn't jumping! In the above video you'll see Sage Heeling around with me! She also sits nearly every time I ask her, which I like! She didn't eat any of her food this morning, but I offered it again after our workout and she gobbled it up!

Sage went to Huntington Beach today for training! She did a great job! She only jumped on me once when we first got there. After that, she behaved very well. We worked on her Place command. For this command, I want Sage to hop up onto a raised object such as a bench. This can help with confidence, and can even be used in your household, where you can have her bed be her "place."

Sage went to Pan Pacific Park today for training! We started working on her Down command. When we started working on it, she started jumping and pulling as a way to try to get out of doing work, but after she got it a few times, she was able to perform the command without much trouble. She also snapped at a dog, which I haven't seen her do before. Sage was sitting nicely in place, and the other dog hopped up onto the bench quickly, which I think startled Sage. After that, however, Sage seemed perfectly fine with the dog, as you can see in the above video! We worked with Sage around that same dog and she never had a similar reaction!

Sage went to Almansor Park today for training! We worked on all the commands she's learned! She didn't jump on me at all, and she performed each of her commands fairly easily! She did get distracted by a few geese and other dogs, but she didn't bark or pull toward them at all, she merely focused on them too much. When Sage is behaving like she did today, she nails pretty much everything I ask of her. Now we are just looking for more consistency from Sage!

Sage went to the Santa Monica Promenade today for training! She was very well behaved, and only put her paws on me once! In the above video, you'll see Sage performing some of her commands around the walkway of the Promenade. She does well throughout, her only mistakes are when she gets up from her Down command before I ask. For her Place, Sit and Down commands, I'd like Sage to get to the point where she can hold each position for at least two minutes!

Sage went to Home Depot today for training! She seemed a little nervous when we went to the lumber area, but after performing some of her commands, she calmed down. While walking through the narrow aisles she likes to try to turn and sniff people or dogs passing by. When she does this, I use the Off command, as well as apply a low stimulation with her E collar.

Sage went to Almansor Park today for training! We started working with her leash dragging. This gives me some idea of how she might behave off leash. She was very attentive and responsive when asked to perform each command. There were only a few instances of her getting distracted by the smell of the geese, and veering off for a second. Other than that, she performed very well! I find that Sage is very susceptible to how I'm feeling while working with her. If I am anxious, she responds accordingly and it's more difficult to manage her. Once we both take a deep breath, she calms down almost immediately and performs all of her commands amazingly!

Sage went to La Mirada Park today for training! Most of the day was spent with her performing commands with her leash dragging. She did a good job! A trainer she hadn't met yet greeted her. She got a little excited at first and wanted to paw and play, but she quickly settled down! Since it's Fourth of July tonight, I'm hoping Sage doesn't have a reaction to the fireworks. A few have gone off over the last couple nights, and she didn't seem to mind, so I'm optimistic!

Sage went to Citadel Outlets today for training! I thought it wouldn't be very busy because it's the day after fourth of July, but it was packed! She was still able to perform all of her commands with her leash dragging though! I think she's about ready to go off leash! In the above video, you'll see another trainer working with Sage. Sage did a great job! From time to time she wanted to go with me instead, because I think Sage is growing fond of me. She still did a great job throughout the day!

Sage was off leash at Almansor Park today! She did great! She didn't even seem too distracted by the geese! She did jump on one trainer this morning while they were working with her, which she hasn't done with me in a while. That being said I'd like to have her work with as many different trainers as I can to get used to her commands coming from different people. With me, she had absolutely zero issues being off leash at the park! Now it's time to get her off leash in a more distracting environment!

Sage went to Citadel Outlets today for training! She was off leash the whole time and didn't have any issues! It wasn't as crowded as last time we were here, but there were enough distractions around to make me proud of her. She even got compliments from a friendly security guard for being so well behaved!

Sage went to Huntington Beach today for training! She wasn't quite ready to be off leash in a place this crowded at first. She definitely needed some warm up time before I was ready to have her off leash here. While she was very good with most of her commands, her Place command seemed to give her quite a bit of trouble today. I think she was a bit nervous with the large crowds and she didn't want to work as hard. She would default to going to the car when she got overwhelmed.

Sage went to Almansor Park and Downtown Brea today for her last full day of training! For her video today, I wanted to show some of the manners she's been working on! For food manners, I want Sage to sit and wait when I put food in front of her. For door manners, I want Sage to wait at the door when I open it, without trying to rush out. For car manners, I want her to hop into the car and walk straight into her kennel. For greeting manners, I want Sage to sit nicely while being petted without jumping on anyone! Sage has been a pleasure to work with! I'll definitely miss having her around!
