Sadie | Labradoodle | Orange, CA | In-Training

Sadie, a five month old Labradoodle, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our One Week Board and Train program. Sadie comes to us with typical puppy behavior: play biting, jumping to greet, counter surfing, little knowledge of commands, and being easily distracted. Over the week Sadie will be working on her on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Sadie is settling in well at my home. She is getting acquainted with her new doggie friends. She hasn't tried playing yet, but is socializing and following the other dogs around.

Today Sadie and I went to the park to work on her commands. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Place, and Come. Sadie caught on quickly to her commands. She had a great first day of training!

Today Sadie and I went to Lowe's to work on her obedience out of the rain and around distractions. She was a little nervous when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained, she was able to settle down. We worked on two new commands, Heel and Come to Heel. She did very well and caught on quickly to her new commands.

Today we walked down to Starbucks for some exposure to a busy street, plus the engagement of humans while at Starbucks.Ā  On the walkĀ Sadie didĀ Ā well to stay in heel only going ahead for briefĀ periods before returning to the proper heel position.Ā  Sadie is responsive to the E-Collar, andĀ  she still needs reminding of what heel is and to sit when asked.

The walk to and back from Starbucks is four miles in total.Ā  I like to reward everyone with a Pupcup that they shared (pics). This afternoon we started to focus on the down command.Ā  Sadie doesn't want to perform the command without a treat reward and then the reward doesn't matter if she is distracted (i.e. dog barking next door).Ā  The distractions continue to be the greatest hurdle to Sadie's long term success.Ā  She needs perpetual exposure to all distractions in all environments.

Today, like yesterday, Sadie was asked to walk down to Starbucks and back.Ā  Today the weather was uncooperative but despiteĀ that Sadie made it down and back.Ā  Ā The rain causes the vehicle's tires to be louder (at least it seems like it) and Sadie reacted to most trucks and some of the cars.Ā  She continues to need more work with desensitizingĀ her to the surroundings.Ā Ā

This afternoon we went to the Lowe's Home Improvement store near us.Ā  Sadie started on a leash walking outside of the building before heading inside.Ā  Once inside she did well staying in heel command following my lead with low distractions.Ā  I eventually removed the leash and had her heeling throughout the store for more than 20 minutes straight.Ā  She continues to have reactions to carts and flat carts, but I thought there was something to build on from this afternoon.Ā  We continue to work on down as she still is hesitantĀ to holding the down with distractions.

She has eaten everything she has been offered.Ā  We will be having another evening walk tonight.

In an addendumĀ to last night's walk, Sadie went around my neighborhood on a leash with little to no pulling or corrections administered.Ā  It was a positive sign.

Today Sadie and I went to the park to work on her obedience commands. She much better with the Down command. She finally is understanding what I want her to do. She was more willing to lay down, even doing it the first time I asked her to. We do need more work around distractions. She is very alert to her surroundings, sometimes to the point where she can't focus on me and follow through with the commands. She is getting better at holding her commands, staying out while i walk around and move away from her.

Today Sadie joined me on a shopping spree at The Citadel Outlets. It was pretty busy, so she was able to work on her commands around many distractions. She did very well. She was able to work semi-off leash (letting her drag the leash around while we practice). There were a few children that tried to run up to her. Sadie stayed in position. Even with other dogs coming close to her, she stayed focused and followed her commands. Many people stop to watch her train and complimented her on her good behavior.

Today Sadie and I went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. We practiced all her commands semi-off leash. She is doing much better with the Down command. She can be a little sassy at times when she doesn't want to listen, but for the most part Sadie will follow through with a command the first time I ask her. We need to tighten a few of her commands and then she will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Sadie and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We met with other OffLeash Trainers and their dogs, so she had plenty of dog distractions to practice around. She did very well. She was definitely interested in the other dogs, but stayed focused and followed all her commands.

Today Sadie and I trained at home. We worked on all her obedience commands. I used her friends as a distraction and let them play and socialize while Sadie and I practiced her commands. She did pretty well. She stayed focused and followed all her commands, even though she really wanted to join in on the fun. We also worked on her door manners, teaching her that she isn't allowed to pass thresholds until told instead of just bolting out the front door because it is open.

Today Sadie and her buddy, Rosie, joined me on a shopping spree at the mall. It was Rosie's first day around high distractions, so Sadie assisted me in teaching Rosie how to be well mannered out in public. Sadie did a great job and followed all her commands. She can't wait to go home and show you everything she has learned!
