Ranger | Cattle Dog | Whittier, CA | In-Training

Ranger, one year old Cattle Dog, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Ranger comes to us being easily distracted, not having a good recall, jumping, excessive barking, reactivity and aggression towards people, and not always obeying commands. Over the two weeks Ranger will be working on his on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Ranger is settling in at my home. We had no issues getting out of the car. He is slowly warming up to me, but is still very cautious. He is starting to come up to me to let me pet him, but I can tell when it becomes too much. He gives a look and his body stiffens. He fell in love with my German Shepherd right away. He follows her around everywhere she goes. It took some time, but Ranger eventually let me take off his harness.

Last night, before bedtime, Ranger and I spent some more time together, trying to get him more comfortable with me. He finally came close to me where he was actually leaning up on me. He was still cautious, but he let me pet his face and the top of his head. I was finally able to take off his muzzle, sitting politely while a removed it, and he was fine the rest of the night.

This morning when I went to let him out of his kennel, I went to put my hand up to the door and that's when he charged at the door barking and growling. It took a little time, but waited until he was calm and relaxed to take him out. I crouched down to his level, slightly opened the door, letting him sniff me, and slipped a leash over his head. I waited for him to approach me and allow me to pet him. Ranger let me slip his ecollar around his neck. Once I got him out of his kennel and he got to see my German Shepherd again, he was completely fine.

Today we went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced commands Sit, Place, and Heel. He did very well and caught on to his commands quickly.

An update on Ranger's hearing: This morning I went to let him out of his kennel. He was dead asleep. He didn't notice that approached. I tried calling his name, whistling, clapping my hands, and even stomping around, but nothing seemed to get his attention. Once his nose caught my scent, is when Ranger finally awoke from his sleep. He didn't try to lunge or bite at my hands through the kennel today. He is finally become more fond of me.

As we were outside and Ranger was socializing with the pack, there was a point where he lost site of me. I could tell he was looking for me. I tried calling his name, whistling and clapping, but it didn't get his attention. I had to walk towards Ranger for him to finally see me. To me, it seems he is possibly deaf. The extent, I don't know. He does very well with hand signals when giving him commands. Verbal commands are more of a struggle. I would recommend trying any tests that your vet may offer.

Today Ranger and I went back to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced two new commands: Down and Come to Sit. He continues to do a great job. He was a definitely alert and would be come distracted if people passed by us, but he wasn't reactive and didn't try to lunge or growl at them.

Today Ranger and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Ranger had plenty of dog  and people distractions to train around. We worked semi-off leash. He did very well and stayed focused on his commands, even though he really wanted to play with all the other dogs. He was friendly with all the trainers and allowed them to pet and give him affection.

Today Ranger and I stayed home for training. We worked on all his obedience commands off leash. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play while we trained. He was a bit distracted and wanted to join in on the fun, but I made sure he followed through with his commands. We started working on Rangers door manners, teaching him that he can’t bolt out the door. He needs to wait until told to pass thresholds.

Today Ranger and I went to Lowes to work on his off leash obedience around distractions. He did very well and followed all his commands. He was reactive towards a worker that approached him a little to quickly, but once he sniffed her, Ranger was happy to be greeted and pet by her. After our Lowes trip, I brought Ranger with me to the nail salon. He waited patiently while I had my nails done. Everyone there said he was so cute and well behaved.

Today Ranger took the day off from training and spent the day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I gave him a bath so he could be nice and clean when he sees you, but it didn't last very long. He wrestled around with his buddies getting all dirty again. Ranger can't wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
