Ranger | Cane Corso Mix | Lancaster, CA | In Training

Tanner Strong

Meet Ranger! He's a four month old Cane Corso Mix from Lancaster, California here for our Three-Week Puppy Board and Train! He is extremely loving and personable. He loves his cuddles and his family! Unfortunately, he's struggling to learn his basic obedience commands, and has trouble with his manners. He absolutely hates walking on a leash, and will pull against it with all of his might. He loves barking at seemingly random times, and has no regard for the little ones in his household and will occasionally knock them down. Over the next twenty one days, we'll show Ranger how to properly behave in and out of the house, work on his basic obedience, teach him how to walk properly on a leash, and show him how to be the best pup he can possibly be! Stay tuned for Ranger's three week transformation!

After picking up Ranger, we stayed at Brace Canyon Park for a little while to get to know each other! As soon as we met, he hugged my leg and let me pet him all over. He seems to be taking to me very well. He's a sweetheart and a cuddly little guy. Once we got moving, it became very clear he did not like the leash at all. He pulled against me for quite a while before I got him walking and moving in tandem with the leash. In the above video, I ask Ranger for his basic command, and he seems to be good with his Sit command, and he also gave me his Down command! I'm unsure if he understood the Down command or if he was tired enough to simply lay down on his own. Once we got home, I let Ranger sniff around my house to start settling him in. He seems to be getting comfortable, as he pretty quickly curled up for a nap. Great job for his first day!

Ranger and I went to Whittier Narrows Park today for training! We started working on his Come To Sit, and Heel commands. For Come To Sit, I want Ranger to Come to my right side, walk around my legs and sit at my left side with his ears at my knee. He did a really good job with this considering it was his first day learning. When sitting next to me, he would sometimes try to sit very crooked in an attempt to face me, which I don't want. I'd like him to sit right in line with my feet. For Heel, I want Ranger to walk politely beside me with his ears about in line with my legs, without pulling forward, backward, or side to side. His improvement on the leash from yesterday is already very good. Yesterday he was pulling me around and outright refusing to walk on a leash sometimes, but today he only showed such behavior once or twice. He still has a lot of work to do on his Heel, but he is at least willing to walk with me now! No potty accidents today!

Ranger and I went to Almansor Park for some playtime and exercise this morning, however most of our training was inside today. We started working on his Place command, which he was not a huge fan of. Luckily, Place is a great command for confidence building, and I believe it will help Ranger in and out of the house. Ranger is a bit timid when it comes to new places, and objects, but he loves people! To try to coax Ranger onto the scary place cot for the first time, I stood on the opposite side and invited him to come toward me. Even though he didn't like the cot, his desire to say hi to me got him to step on. At this point I praised him verbally and physically! It's a slow process to get Ranger comfort with these new things, but it will be worth it in the end!

Ranger and I went to Santa Anita Mall today! He was pretty nervous in this new environment. He wanted to cling very close to me, which is great for now, but I'd like to build his confidence in these new environments. He was very responsive with his commands, as long as he was right next to me. If I asked for any given command while he was a few feet from me, he wanted to come right up to me and then sit or lay down. His understanding of his basic commands seems to be very good now, his training will mostly come down to how much confidence we can build! He didn't have a potty accident inside or in his crate, but he did piddle from time to time when in the new environment. This nervous piddle is something I believe will be alleviated by his aging and, again, building his confidence.

Ranger and I went to Santa Monica Pier today for training! He was pretty nervous, as this was certainly the most crowded environment he's been to with me. That being said, he still did a good job. He wasn't quite as attentive as he's been at previous locations, but considering the drastic step up in difficulty presented to him today, I'd say he did quite well. I found myself having to use leash tension and leash corrections much more frequently than at the parks, but his ability to even exist, let alone perform commands in such an environment is quite impressive to me considering how nervous and introverted he typically is. Great job, Ranger!

Ranger and I went to Rancho Cienega Park today! This park has few distractions, but the one main draw is the skatepark. Ranger had zero issues performing his commands in the fields, but when we were close to the skaters he often wanted to keep his eyes on them rather than me. I'm unsure how often Ranger had seen and heard skateboards so this could be a completely new sensation for him. He did a great job with this considered, and it is all boiling down to his confidence building.

Ranger and I went to Almansor Park today for training! There were quite a few people there for a soccer league, and Ranger did a pretty good job! He was definitely a little hesitant with a few distractions. There were a couple noisy dogs that Ranger didn't appreciate, and also a vendor whose bells seemed to make Ranger uncomfortable. Ranger behaved very well and did an alright job of walking on his leash around these distractions!

Ranger and I went to Santa Monica Pier today! We went later in the day then normal and it was way more crowded. Ranger was a little put off by the very dense crowds, but generally behaved well! He needs a lot of work on his Heel command in these more populated areas, but he's getting more comfortable each time we go somewhere like this! No potty accidents today!

Ranger and I went to Venice Beach today for training! We had fun times at the beach and slightly more challenging times on the boardwalk. He was very accepting of the Beach and the water, however the crowds of the boardwalk made him a little more uncomfortable. That being said, I'm glad he got the opportunity to play in the sand!

Ranger and I went to Almansor Park today! He worked on his basic commands and did an okay job! He was as loving as ever, although I would like him to be a little bit more responsive. Sometimes it takes him a second to register what I'm asking, but I believe that is due to his age and nervous nature! Other than that he's such a good boy!

Ranger went to Almansor Park today for training! He had a blast playing at the park. We mostly had fun today and he got to be introduced to my personal puppy. He loves her, however she can be a bit overbearing and he sometimes wanted to go to his safe space in his crate rather than play. He had a good day though!

Ranger and I went to Santa Monica Pier today for training! It wasn't as crowded as last time we went there, but it was still a lot. His commands are going well, although he still sometimes has trouble staying engaged with me when other things are going on. After the pier, we went home where Ranger got a well earned nap. We then worked on some of his commands and manners inside the house. I noticed that he sometimes gets used to a little more freedom inside, which is fine, but then he doesn't feel the need to heel when I ask and hold his positions while indoors. One thing we worked on inside today was his food manners. I want Ranger to politely sit when I put food in front of him without trying to immediately grab it. He's doing pretty well, but he definitely would rather be playing around and doing Whatever he wants before dinner, instead of holding his spot!

Ranger and I spent the day at Almansor Park today. He got a lot of exercise as a lot of our day was spent heeling around the track. There weren't too many people or other dogs out there today, but that allowed the geese and ducks to take over the park. Ranger was very interested in the birds when we first got there and wanted to pull toward them, but eventually he started engaging with me a little more than those distractions. We'll be going back to the park tonight for more walking and a little more work on his commands! Ranger's potty training is going very well and he's been very good at waiting until we go outside to potty! If he has any accidents they'll be noted here, but I believe he's through the toughest of his potty training.

Ranger went to Gwinn Park today for training! Half of the park is mostly fields and half of the park is a fenced in dog park. For Ranger's safety, he won't be going into any dog parks with other dogs, but we can still take him nearby to use the other dogs as distractions! There were a few dogs that Ranger didn't want to go near, and those were mostly the loud larger dogs. The ones closer to his size, however, I got him to play bow and run around, even with a fence between him and his new friend. Ranger seems to prefer people to other dogs, so I think little exercises like this will help his confidence with dogs!

Ranger and I went to Brace Canyon Park for training! This is where Ranger was dropped off and I think he knew it, because he was very playful and happy when we got there! We played around for a bit, and then got to work. It took a little while for him to go from play mode to work mode, but that's okay! Once he did, his commands were very smooth and on point for the most part! After our workout, Ranger was very tired but we still had a lot of time to spend out there, so Ranger took his nap in the grass. No potty accidents so far today!

Ranger and I went to Whittier Narrows Park today for training! He was a very happy puppy again today, which is great to see. He did a great job with each of his commands, and I started to try to increase the distance I can walk away from Ranger without him getting up. He's doing a great job staying put until I either release him with "break!", or ask him to perform a Come To Sit. In either case, Ranger ran to me with excitement each time. He's doing a really good job! No potty accidents so far today!

Ranger and I went to George Izay park today! It was a nice little park with tons of people and their kids running around playing. Several wanted to stop and pet Ranger, and Ranger did a great job of accepting their pets without jumping or shying away. He did lay down and roll over for belly rubs a few times though. Ideally, I want Ranger to sit politely when they pet him and stay fairly calm, but him rolling over isn't exactly the worst thing in the world! No potty accidents today!

Ranger and I went to Almansor Park! He had fun by the pond for most of the day today. He did get a little muddy but nothing a quick bath can't fix. He mostly did a good job of ignoring the geese and ducks, although there were a couple times it seemed like he wanted to play with a particularly honky goose. Aside from that, he did very well with his commands, and we worked more on his ability to hold his positions without breaking! No potty accidents today.

Ranger went back to Santa Monica Pier today! He's been there enough to where he didn't have very many issues. While walking down to the pier, there was a construction area setting up that we had to walk very close to in order to get to the pier and Ranger didn't like that very much at all. Other than that, he did excellent work all day, and even displayed some of his playful side on the pier, which he wasn't doing the other times we've been there!

Ranger and I went to Almansor Park today! He seems to be doing a great job with human and dog distractions, based on his time at Santa Monica Pier, but he still sometimes gets distracted by birds and bird poop. We spent most of today working and playing around the flocks of geese and ducks at the pond! Most of the time he gets interested in them to the point of distraction when they do something interesting like honk or fly. He usually gives me his attention back right after, but sometimes needs a little leash tension to get back on track. He also likes to sniff the goose poop, so it's very important to give him little leash corrections when his nose goes down to try to check out the poop. No potty accidents today!

Ranger and I went to Garfield Park for his last full day of training! We were in and out all day because it was raining on and off here, but Ranger still got plenty of work and playtime outside! We worked on each of his commands, which he did well with! While at home, we had some playtime, but also worked a lot on his indoor manners. We've gone over his food manners, but I also practiced his door manners, where I simply have Ranger hold his sit or down position while I open and close the front door, ideally without Ranger breaking and trying to go through. Ranger has been a pleasure to work with and his sweet, playful demeanor has been great these last few weeks! I'm going to miss having him here with me!
