Meet Pancho, a four-year-old German Shepherd/Doberman mix joining OffLeash SoCal for a few weeks of focused obedience and reactivity training. While Pancho is a loving and devoted companion to his mom—his favorite person and constant sidekick—his struggles with reactivity toward men and small animals have made outings stressful and unpredictable. At home, he’s cherished as the center of attention, but outside the home, his behaviors have begun to disrupt the peace for both his mom and those around him. During his board and train, we’ll be working on building Pancho’s confidence, improving his obedience, and creating calm, structured behaviors so he and his mom can enjoy happier, more peaceful adventures together.

Poncho the Shepherd has made great progress with decompressing and settling into his environment. He is now able to comfortably go in and out of his crate without wearing a muzzle, showing increased trust, confidence, and relaxation. As he continues to adjust and build positive routines, Poncho is ready to begin the next phase of his training. His improved comfort level and calmer mindset will help create a strong foundation for obedience work, structure, and continued behavioral development.

Pancho the Shepherd has made incredible progress in his training and behavior over time. With consistent guidance, patience, and reduced stress levels, he has become significantly less reactive in situations that once overwhelmed him, allowing him to safely remove his muzzle more often. His growing confidence and calmer demeanor have helped him build trust and respond better to his environment. Along with these improvements, Pancho has also learned to sit on command, showing his ability to focus, listen, and continue developing positive behaviors through training and reinforcement.

Pancho the Shepherd made great progress during his training session as he learned how to properly heel at his handler’s side with a loose leash. At the beginning, he needed a small amount of leash pressure and guidance to help him understand where he should be positioned and when to sit after stopping. As the session continued, Pancho quickly began connecting the behavior on his own and became much more consistent. By the end of training, he was walking nicely at heel with far less guidance and was automatically sitting whenever his handler stopped moving. His focus, willingness to learn, and improvement throughout the session showed excellent progress and growing confidence in his obedience work.

Pancho spent time training at the park today with a strong focus on patience and impulse control. Throughout the session, he practiced holding long sit commands while gradually increasing the amount of time he was expected to remain in position. Despite the distractions of the park environment, which included several other men (wearing hats) and women working their dogs. Pancho showed steady improvement and began understanding the importance of remaining calm and patient until released. By slowly extending the duration of each sit, he was able to build confidence, focus, and self-control. Overall, Pancho made solid progress and responded well to the structured repetition and guidance during today’s training session.

Pancho demonstrated excellent obedience and focus in a public park environment while surrounded by other dogs and distractions. He was able to successfully perform and maintain both “sit” and “down” commands calmly and confidently, showing good impulse control and responsiveness to direction. Despite the activity around him, Pancho remained attentive and composed, making positive progress with his public socialization and obedience skills.

Pancho the Shepard learned the “place” command by first being introduced to an elevated cot and encouraged to simply step onto it. Once Pancho became comfortable placing all four paws on the cot, he was guided into a sit position while remaining on the platform. After building consistency and confidence with sitting calmly, Pancho progressed to laying down fully on the cot and holding the position. Using the elevated cot helped create a clear boundary and made it easier for Pancho to understand exactly where he was expected to be during place training.

Pancho the shepherd took his first trip to The Home Depot with me, and the goal of the outing was to work through one of his biggest triggers: men wearing hats. Throughout the visit, we intentionally exposed him to that challenge in a controlled and positive way, and we came across three different men wearing hats during the trip. Each time, Pancho stayed composed, held his resolve, and focused on me instead of reacting. It was a huge win for his confidence and training, especially in such a busy and distracting environment. By the end of the day, he handled himself incredibly well and proved that all the work we’ve been putting in is paying off.

Pancho the shepherd is learning to come, sit, and land in the heel position on my left-hand side with growing confidence and focus. During training sessions, he responds well to guidance and is beginning to understand that coming directly to me and sitting neatly at my left side is the desired behavior. His intelligence and eagerness to work make him a quick learner, and with consistent practice, he is developing better precision and attention while moving into the correct heel position.

Pancho the shepherd has made incredible progress in overcoming his reactivity toward other dogs during our training sessions at the park. At first, he would become tense and vocal whenever another dog came into view, but through consistent guidance, patience, and positive reinforcement, he has learned to stay calmer and more focused on me. Each session has helped build his confidence and trust, allowing him to walk past other dogs with greater self-control and composure. Watching Pancho choose engagement and calm behavior instead of reacting has been rewarding, and his improvement shows how dedicated training and teamwork can create meaningful change.

Pancho the Shepherd spent time training at the park today where I introduced him to several different people, including both male and female dog trainers wearing hats. Throughout each interaction, Pancho remained neutral, social, and well-mannered, showing confidence and stability in a variety of encounters. He handled the introductions calmly without hesitation or avoidance and was able to engage appropriately while staying responsive to me. His ability to work through new environmental and social exposures demonstrated solid progress in his overall obedience and confidence building.

Pancho the Shepherd is learning proper vehicle etiquette by practicing calm and controlled loading into the truck and entering the crate on command. Training sessions focus on building patience, confidence, and obedience around the vehicle environment while reinforcing safe behaviors such as waiting politely before jumping in, avoiding excitement at the door, and settling quietly inside the crate once loaded. With consistency and positive reinforcement, Pancho is developing reliable travel manners that promote safety, structure, and a smooth routine during transportation.
