Oscar | Husky/Pitbull Mix | Glendale, CA | In-Training

Meet Oscar! Oscar is an 8 month old Husky/Pitbull mix from Glendale, CA and he is joining us for our Two Week Board and Train Program! Oscar is a sweet pup who need to learn bay obedience and kennel manners. Oscar tends to jump up when greeting new people and pulls heavily on leash when out for walks. He likes to bite the leash as well as biting hands. Overall, Oscar is a sweet boy who is ready to learn! Check out his 14 day transformation!

Oscar and I spent the remainder of the day getting to know each other. Oscar is very vocal so it did take him a while to get used to the kennel in the car and at home. After about 10 minutes at home he was able to relax in his kennel. Oscar and I worked on some of the commands he already knew such as sit and down. We used what he already knew to work on conditioning him to the e-collar. He was a bit unsure of what to do but after repeating commands he was able to pair the e-collar to the command. Overall, Oscar was able to settle in nicely and ate all of his kibble!

Oscar and I spent majority of the day working on leash pressure. He doesn’t like any pressure on his neck and will become very vocal when any amount of pressure is applied. We worked on getting him used to the slip leash before going back in with the e-collar since using both seemed to overwhelm him. After some time we were able to work on heel and come to sit. His sit is coming along really well! He ate all of his breakfast and dinner and is slowly learning how to be in the kennel.

Oscar had a bit of a rough day today while training. He really didn’t enjoy any leash pressure and would try to alligator roll any chance he could. He was also very vocal and made it difficult to walk him or train him. We ended up working around my home where he seems most comfortable. We were able to get a lot of progress done with the e-collar and leash pressure. It seems that when Oscar gets overwhelmed and not get his way he will vocalize and try to get out of his leash. We’re going to increase his distractions to get him past his comfort zone. Overall, he is doing amazing at home and is such a sweet boy!

Pupdate 3/8/2023

Oscar and I went to Ruben Ingold Parkway today to work on his heel around distractions. He did a lot better with leash pressure today and was not trying to pull through his leash. Oscar was really interested in all of the people that passed us at the park but was a little hesitant with the other dogs that were there training as well. He seems more interested in people than dogs and will avoid them if he can. Oscar is doing a lot better with his come to sit but will sit far away from me. He does this while we’re heeling as well. We’re going to work on it these next couple of days as well as getting him comfortable with distractions. Oscar did have an accident in the car kennel today. It was a small accident and most likely due to nerves. Overall, he is doing great!

Pupdate 3/9/2023

Oscar and I worked on building his confidence at a local park. We worked on placing on different surfaces as well as placing for an extended period of time. Oscar had a hard time placing on the slide and would jump over it. After some time he didn’t mind the texture. Oscar is doing a little better with his heel but still walks a bit away from me. We ended our day by working on heel and working on down. He didn’t have any accidents in the kennel today and was a good boy.

Pupdate 3/10/2023

Oscar and I went to Del Amo mall where we worked on all of his commands. Oscar did go potty in his kennel on the ride to the mall. He tends to go potty in the kennel if we’re going on long car rides despite already having gone potty. This could be due to nerves or anxiety. Oscar did great at the mall and listened to his commands really well. He did try to pull a couple of times while we walked but after a couple of corrections he was able to heel nicely. We’re still working on getting him to walk closer to me since he tends to like to drift while we walk. Overall, Oscar is a good boy.

Pupdate 3/11/2023

Oscar and I worked on all of his commands at home. We also worked on getting him used to following commands in my home since he struggles with listening. He did try to put his paws up on the counter a couple of times today and tired to jump up at me. After working on his commands he was able to follow through. We focused on door manners and food manners since Oscar is having a hard time with impulse control. Overall, he is a good boy!

Pupdate 3/12/2023

Oscar and I worked on him being more neutral while leaving my home. We also worked more on his door manners since he gets overly excited while leaving my home. Oscar has a tendency to not listen to commands once we exit my home. We worked on his come command and place command to get home uninterested in always wanting to rush outside. We tried to make the outside as uninteresting as possible so he would be more willing to want to do his commands. After some time, Oscar was able to get the hang of it and was more eager to wait and see what was next! He hasn’t had any accidents in the car kennel.

Oscar went to Legg Lake Park to work on all of his commands with the leash dragging. He did a great job but did get a bit distracted by the grass a couple of times. We worked around other trainers and their pups and he did a great job. At first he was really excited and interested in the pups but soon was able to do all of his commands without turning back to look at the dogs. Overall, Oscar did an amazing job and is being such a good boy.

Pupdate 3/14/2023

Oscar and I went to Petsmart where we were able to work on all of his commands with no leash pressure. He does such a great job but tends to down when doing his come to sit. At times his positioning will be a bit off so we focused on getting him to do the command correctly. In the video you can see him do his come to sit multiple times until he doesn’t down and sits instead. After doing this a couple of times Oscar realized how to do his command properly. Oscar tends to sniff the ground and at times will stop mid walk so we focused on that today since there are so many smells at the pet store. He did such a great job and is a really good boy!

Oscar and I worked on all of his commands off leash at Lowe’s! He did a great job working around other trainers and their pups. Oscar does tend to still walk a bit sways from me but does his best to follow through with his commands. He did such an amazing job and enjoyed some playtime before bed!

Pupdate 3/16/2023

Oscar and I spent the day working on all of his commands! He needed a little more work on his manners at home since he did get more comfortable being with me and was trying to see what he could get away with. Oscar tried to put his paws up on the counter while I made his dinner but was corrected when he tried. Oscar enjoyed some play time before bed and didn’t have any potty accidents in my home.

Pupdate 3/17/2023

Oscar and I spent time working on all of his commands off leash. It did take some time to calm him down once we arrived at the park. He wanted to run into the grass and play. After working on his commands he was able to run around the park freely. He is such a good boy and has improved so much. Oscar continues to be confident and loves exploring new things each day! He is a good boy.

Pupdate 3/18/2023

Oscar and I went to Del Amo Mall to work on all of his commands off leash. He did an amazing job with all of the distractions but was definitely a little overwhelmed at the amount of people that passed us. Oscar is such a sweet boy and loves to follow through with his commands but will definitely take any opportunity to lay down if he can. Overall, Oscar did an amazing job today.
