Bo, a three year old American Akita, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Bo has been through our Basic Obedience Lessons in the past, so he does know all his commands. The owners main concern is that Bo becomes reactive on walks when he sees other dogs. Over the two weeks Bo will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Bo is settling in at my home. I tried introducing him to one of my dogs to see how he would act. He wasnā€™t reactive but I could tell Bo was tense. He wa okay sniffing the other dog, but didnā€™t want it to sniff him. I let him meet the rest of the pack through the fence. I am going to keep him separated from the other dogs for now and let him get adjusted to his surroundings.

Today Bo and I went to the park to train. We did a run through of all his commands to see where he is at with his obedience. Bo is great with his sit and place commands. He is not bad with his heel command, but does like to lead on the walks. Bo was very stubborn and resistant with his down command. Not too bad for his first day of training.Ā

Today Bo and I stayed home to train. We practiced all his commands. We worked on his duration. Bo will hold his commands for a short time before he wants to break command. He didnā€™t much better with the down command, following the command the first time I asked him. We will continue to practice and progress.

Today Bo and I Went to Loweā€™s to work out of the heat and train around distractions. He did very well. He was focused and obedient. We worked on his distance and duration. Bo did pretty well holding all his commands, except for his sit. He kept wanting to slide into a down, but I made sure that he followed through with the command. He received a few compliments from customers on how handsome and well behaved he is.

Happy Fourth of July!Ā Today Bo and I went to Loweā€™s to work on his commands and stay out of the heat. He did pretty well. We were able to train semi-off leash. I let Bo drag the leash while we trained. Bo was a little stubborn with his ā€˜comeā€™ command. We need to tighten up a few of his commands, then Bo will be ready to work completely off leash.Ā

Today Bo and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced more semi-off leash. We worked on all his commands and practiced his distance and duration. We came across another dog while we were there. Bo was interested, but stayed focused on his heel command and we were able to pass by smoothly. He is still being stubborn with his come command. He knows to come around and sit at my left side, but tries to tries to find a way to get out of doing it. He tries to flop on the floor and roll around or will stop and sit behind me, but I still make sure that he follows through and completes the command.

When we got home, I gave Bo a bath. As he was rolling around drying, I noticed he had red rash circles on his stomach. I took him to the vet to get it checked out. The vet ruled out ringworm, which is a relief. He told me Bo had a bacterial infection, non-contagious.Ā They gave him a two shots and a weeks worth of medication to clear it up.Ā  The vet gave him Apoquel to help with the itching, Simplicef for infection/irritation, and Terbinafine cream a topical anti fungal cream.

He did very well being off leash around the other dogs. We were able to heel by them smoothly. He held his commands as they walked around him. Bo did a great job today! Boā€™s tummy is looking much better. The redness has gone down and scabbing is going away. I am still giving him his medication and applying the cream to his tummy daily.

Today Bo joined me on a little shopping spree at the outdoor mall. We practiced his off leash obedience around many people distractions. He did an awesome job staying focused and following his commands. Bo is not a big fan of shopping. He kept looking at me like ā€˜Iā€™m over this. Letā€™s go home.ā€™ Bo had many admirers that stopped to watch him train.

Today Bo did some light training at home. We worked on all his commands and practiced his food manners. For food manners, Bo must wait patiently for his meal until given permission. Just because the food is on the floor, does not mean it belongs to him. He spent his last day, relaxing and socializing with some of his friends. Bo has done a great job with his training. He canā€™t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
