Writer: J VJ V

Let’s give a warm welcome to Murphy, a 9-month-old Cattle Dog mix from Long Beach, CA, here for our 3-week Board and Train program! She’s joined us to work on leash reactivity, pulling on walks, anxiety, and some food and toy possession challenges. Murphy is already showing off her smarts, and feeling confident she’s going to excel. Stay tuned for her incredible 3-week transformation!

Today, the drive home with Murphy went fairly smoothly, though she was a bit anxious and whiny at times. Playing some dog meditation music seemed to calm her down quite a bit and helped ease her nerves. Despite her initial nervousness, she was very polite when asked to get in and out of the car crate. We made a stop at a local park to help her acclimate to me, and the session went remarkably well—she quickly demonstrated trust and was sweet and cooperative throughout. Once home, Murphy adjusted seamlessly, exploring her surroundings with curiosity and ease. Introductions with my dog and cat also went relatively well, and we followed up with some training exercises. I’m thrilled to report that Murphy exhibits impressive intelligence and obedience. She shows foundational understanding of commands like sit, down, and place, and while her impulse control needs refining, her ability to quickly build on this skill is outstanding. Murphy also responds efficiently to leash pressure and thrives on praise. Her sharp mind, eagerness to learn, and sweet demeanor make her a joy to work with, and I have no doubt she will amaze everyone during her three-week transformation. Stay tuned!

Today, Murphy and I embarked on an exciting adventure filled with fun activities and focused training sessions! We began with a brief morning walk to introduce the e-collar and the “heel” command, and she exceeded my expectations for a first session, responding remarkably well. Murphy’s intelligence truly stood out as she quickly adapted to new commands and demonstrated an impressive ability to stay engaged. Our next stop was a large park in El Monte, where we joined other Off Leash SoCal trainers and their board-and-train dogs. Murphy continued to shine, maintaining attentiveness and practicing obedience even amidst distractions like joggers, squirrels, and other dogs. While she occasionally got distracted, she showed an exceptional ability to refocus and stay on task, which speaks to her sharp mind and natural eagerness to learn. I was particularly impressed with her progress in shaping behaviors such as “come to sit,” “extended down,” “heel,” and “place.” It’s clear that Murphy has the potential to achieve a high level of training, and her focus and adaptability on day one are incredibly promising. Stay tuned for Murphys upcoming pupdates!

Today, Murphy and I began our day with a brief morning walk focused on shaping “heel” and practicing impulse control. We followed this with a variety of in-home training exercises, including “door” and “food manners.” Murphy has shown herself to be a highly motivated and eager learner, especially when provided with encouragement, guidance, and support. Her intelligence shines through in her ability to grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively during training. She has already demonstrated remarkable progress in building impulse control, even capturing an “extended down” at the doorway. After our sessions, I followed up with another walk and decided to phase out some training collars to see how she would perform using only the e-collar and flat collar; she exceeded expectations and responded beautifully. Murphy’s willingness to learn, coupled with her natural problem-solving skills, makes her a pleasure to work with. Her ability to adapt to new exercises and maintain focus is truly impressive, and I couldn’t be happier with today’s results. Stay tuned for Murphy’s upcoming pupdates!

Today, Murphy and I began our day with our usual morning walk, followed by some productive yard training. We concluded the afternoon with an excellent session at my local park, where I’ve been focusing on her training during the mornings. In the video, you’ll notice she appears distracted at times due to squirrels, dogs, and children playing nearby. Despite these distractions, she performed exceptionally well, and we are steadily working on improving her extended “down.” Murphy has already mastered the concept of extended “sit,” and her progress with “place,” “come to sit,” and “heel” has been impressive. Her focus and responsiveness continue to grow, and her ability to adapt to new challenges is remarkable. She’s developing into a confident and well-rounded dog, and I couldn’t be prouder of her efforts. Stay tuned for Murphy’s upcoming pupdates!
