Mora, an eleven month old Husky/Shepherd Mix, joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Board and Train program. She comes to us knowing commands, but not always following them. She is easily excitable and distracted, pulls on the leash, while walking, jumps to greet, and has leash reactivity. Over the three weeks Mora will be working on her OffLeash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Mora is settling in well at my home. She got to meet my pack. She was a bit reactive at first. Once she got to smell and greet each dog she settled down. I am going to let her spend the rest of the day getting adjusted to her new surroundings. Tomorrow we will begin her training. Above is a tutorial video of the Ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with the training collar.

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her commands. I introduced and conditioned her to the Ecollar. We worked on all of her commands. She did great with her Sit and Place commands. Down was a little difficult, but that was because she was nervous. After some reps, she relaxed and was able to do the Down command with ease. We also worked on her Heel command. Heel is a structured walk where Mora must walk at my side. She is not allowed to lead or lag behind. She shouldn’t be fixated on her surroundings. We are the most important distraction and she needs to  focus on us and where we are going. It is still a work in progress but Mora is walking much better, staying close to my side and not trying to drag me around.

Today Mora and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. She was a very good girl and followed all of her commands. She did much better with the down command, not giving me such a struggle like yesterday. We worked more on her heel command. Mora di very well for her second day of training!

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. Mora did a great job! She was focused and obedient. We had one little distraction at the park, another puppy. Mora started to become reactive but I gave her a tap on the collar and told her ‘off’. She immediately stopped and went back to following her commands.

Today Mora and I went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. She was a little distracted at first, with the new surroundings, but as we walked around and trained she was able to settle down and focus. We walked through a few stores. There was a little boy that was interested in Mora and wanted to come up to her, but she was very timid and wanted to avoid him.

Today Mora and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. She did very well. She was focused and obedient. We also worked on her door manners.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.) Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take him out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her obedience. The park was pretty busy. There were many people and dog distractions to work around. Even horse distractions. Mora did pretty well following her commands. She struggled with her come to sit. She’s was a little scared of the party, behind us, that was hitting the piñata. We were able to most of her commands semi-off leash (leash dragging). We need to tighten up a few of her commands, build her confidence and get her desensitized to busy surroundings so we can start training completely off leash.

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Mora had plenty of dog distractions to work around. She was a little vocal when we first approached the dogs, but as we trained she was able to ignore the dogs and follow her commands. We practiced her commands semi-off leash. Mora helped welcome a new training member to the pack, Kaiju the Great Dane. She was actually scared of him at first because of his size. He tried to play with her and she would run away whimpering. After sometime of hanging out with each other, Mora got some courage to sniff and greet Kaiju. Once she realized she had a new friend, they were running around and chasing each other in the yard.

Today Mora joined me on a little shopping spree at the shopping outlets. She had many people and dog distractions to work around. Mora did a great job staying focused and following her commands. We passed by other dogs smoothly, even when the other dogs would bark at Mora. We practiced all her commands semi-off leash. Mora received a few compliments from admirers that stopped to watch her train.

Today Mora and I went to Lowe’s to work on her obedience around distractions. She did a great job following all her commands semi-off leash. We also worked on a new command, under. Same thing as place, except mora must go under the object. She did very well and caught onto her new command quickly.

Today Mora and I stayed home to train. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. We also practiced her food and door manners.

The benefits of food manners is:

-Impulse control-Waiting for food helps your dog learn patience

-Reducing Anxiety and possessiveness- Good food manners can help reduce your dog's excitement, anxiety, or possessiveness around food.

-Not eating things she’s not supposed to- good food manners will teach her not to grab and eat things off the floor. Just because there is food on the floor does not mean it belongs to her.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.) Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take her out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her obedience. The park was a little quiet, so we were able to really work on her focus. Mora was a very good girl and followed all of her commands. We came across another dog while we were training. The dog was lunging and trying to pull its way over to us. Mora did very well holding her down command and watching the dog as it passed by.

Today Mora and I went to the shopping outlet to work on her off leash obedience around distractions. She did pretty well. She did get distracted by a few dogs that were there. Someone and their dog ran up to us while we were walking by. I told Mora ‘off’, she looked to me and continued on with her heel. Mora had an admirer that stopped to compliment her on her training. The woman asked to pet Mora which I okayed as long as Mora stayed in a Sit position. Mora tried her hardest to sit nicely, but couldn’t help getting up to say hi and give kisses.

Today Mora and I went to the park to work on her off leash obedience. I had a new OffLeash trainer that assisted me and got to work with Mora. She did pretty well with taking direction from a different person. At first she was a little stubborn and didn’t want to listen, only because she’s not used to a different handler. She listened shortly after. There were many squirrels at the park that got Mora’s attention. She really wanted to run over and chase them, but was a very good girl and resisted the urge. We also came across other dogs while we were training. Mora ignored them and stayed focused on her commands.

Today Mora and I trained at home to stay out of the heat. We practiced her commands and worked on her distance and duration. We practiced more of her food and door manners. She did a great job! She was focused and obedient. She loves playing fetch with the ball, but doesn’t always like brining back to me, so we started working on the ‘Out’ command.

Why is Out beneficial:

  • Safety

Dogs can swallow objects that are toxic, cause an obstruction, or damage internal tissue. The "out" command can prevent your dog from swallowing something dangerous, like medication or chocolate.

  • Play

The "out" command allows you to play games like tug-of-war and fetch safely.

  • Impulse control

The "out" command can help your dog learn impulse control.

  • Resource guarding

The "out" command can help prevent resource guarding, or manage and treat it if it already exists.

Today Mora and I went down to the beach to work on her obedience around distractions. Mora was a little distracted with all the commotion going on around us.

As we walked along the beach and trained she was able to settle down and focus. She did a great job working completely off leash! We passed by many dogs, some well mannered and others not so much. Mora stayed focused on her commands and ignored the other dogs. She received quite a few compliments on her off leash obedience.
