Max | Golden Retriever | Corona, CA | In Training

Meet Max, the seven-month-old Golden Retriever from Corona California has joined us for our Three Week Board and Train Program. Max has shown difficulty in walking on a leash. Originally the owner tried using a flat collar and was unsuccessful so switched to a harness and yet has still been unable to walk Max successfully. In addition, Max tends to do whatever Max wants and doesn’t listen to the commands given to him. When Max no longer wants to work, he simply jumps up on people, lays down, or bites at the handler and or leash in an effort to not have to follow through with the task. Stay tuned for Maxes amazing transformation.

After the initial meeting of Max this morning, your brother helped me work on simply following on a leash. Once Max became exhausted, we loaded him in the car headed back to my home. Max enjoyed roaming and relaxing in the back yard. Max met our dog Oso; I think they’ll become mates in a few days.

In the afternoon we spent more time leash walking and sitting. Max was introduced to the E-Collar at this time. Max may be tired and willing to follow, but things haven’t been as bad as advertised, lol. We will take an evening walk before bed and then do it all over again tomorrow.

Today started the first day of “work” with Max. We focused on walking on a leash without pulling, come to sit, and place.

Max had a good day of work. He is getting more comfortable with Oso, and the routine around our home.

In the videos above you can see Max working on his 'come to sit' and 'heel' commands. Max can be stubborn at times but you will notice with time, repetition and patience he starts to understand the task at hand. It is important that Max follows through with each command asked. This is starting to teach him that he can no longer do whatever he wants. Remember, if you give him and inch he will take a mile.

Please listen to the video above for details on Max's place command.

Pupdate 5/19/2022

In todays video we had Max walking in the driveway with his leash dragging on the ground! While his 'heel' may not be perfect it is a great improvement for him. This shows us that he understands the concept of the command. Now we will work on cleaning up his performance and slowly take him out to new environments.

In the video you can see Max practicing his 'place' command on a new surface. Max was also working with a different trainer Sheena. At first he was very scared about this new 'place' object and wanted to hide. After I (Sheena) walked up with him and showed him there is nothing to be afraid of, he was able to do it on his own. Although, he is still nervous it is a great accomplishment for him. Practicing ‘place’ on different surfaces will help build his confidence.

Today Max took a trip down to a local park. He was very distracted by the many squirrels and made multiple attempts to chase them. He also barked and lowly growled at anyone and all dogs who walked by. Even if they were 30ft away. In these situations I tell Max 'off' and remind him of the task at hand. Each time I do so I use the stimulation. This is continuing to set boundaries for him and let him know what is and isn't okay.

Max and his buddy Oso took a walk to go get some lunch at In-N-Out. He did better on his walk overall and will automatically sit when you stop walking. Which is exactly what we are looking for. Max does often pull in the beginning of every walk until he gets into his grove. He is wary of the loud trucks that passed by on the street. On the walk back he did much better and didn't start off his heel pulling as much.

At Home Depot Max was a bit wary and unsure of the flat bed carts rolling by. He would try to scoot further from them. Max did not low growl or bark at anyone, but I could see that he was very unsure of them walking close by. Even though it was nice and cool inside, his paws were leaving sweat marks on the floors. Which shows that he was nervous in this new environment. We have noticed Max submissively urinates and cowers when he thinks he's in trouble. Regardless whether he is in trouble or not.

Max worked around other trainers and their pups. It was much more difficult for him to focus as he wanted to investigate each dog. I continued to work him through his commands as usual to keep his focus on me. In situations like this it’s important to actively use the e-collar. There were a couple of children playing in the area that spooked him as well. He tried to move as far away from them as possible.

Today Max had the opportunity to work with more trainers and more pups. Just as last time, it was very difficult for him to focus on the tasks. After about an hour he was able to work through it but needed consistent reminders. He didn't growl or bark at anyone today, so that is good progress. I have noticed he does 'okay' with dogs who are very calm and mellow. He does not like those who are closer to a high energy.

Max had a great morning at the park to do some light training. He has been doing well OffLeash, even with some distractions around. I think he likes the freedom he has to run and sniff around. Within reason of course. He will come when called but sometimes will think he's in trouble. When he does this, he takes his time and may move back and forth. (moving closer to you, then away) All you need to do is keep your tone of voice light when calling him to 'come' and he will make his way to you.

Max did significantly better at Home Depot today. He wasn't nervous of the flat bed carts being pushed around. He was even brave enough to 'place' on one. Max seems to be more comfortable walking around people even down the narrow isles. There are some men here and there that is is still unsure of. As long as you stay confident and in control of the situation Max won't feel the need to step in.

Max and I took a trip to the beach today. He did great with his commands he has learn thus far. His OffLeash work gets better each day. Max is really enjoying the adventures he has been able to go on and has gained so much confidence.

When and if a leash is going to be used, I would recommend connecting it to a standard flat collar. Max and Neo flat collars are a great and reliable brand. He has been wearing one since he arrived with us. Flat collars work best to avoid him pulling as well.

In today's video you can see Max OffLeash at the Santa Monica Pier. Overall, he did well and just needs some cleaning up his commands. Max also practiced the 'under' command today. This is where we want him to lie underneath a table or chair. Initially he was confused but was able to problem solve with some assistance. Some areas are more difficult for him to get underneath given his size. He has also shaved off a couple of pounds which is good!

Max enjoyed a well deserved relaxing day with his buddy Oso. He also enjoyed some belly rubs. They get along, play very well and love to sunbathe together. I think Oso is going to miss him when Max goes home!

Today Max took a trip to a local park where he was able to work with someone he just met that day! When he was approached Max was comfortable and more confident than before. At first he struggled a bit with who to go to since he is used to doing things with me. With consistency Max problem solved and did well with the other individual with only minor hiccups along the way. In the end of the video you can see Max struggle a bit with going into a 'sit' from a 'down'. But, he was able to accomplish it in the end.

Pupdate 6/1/2022

Max was such a good sweet boy with this tiny little 4 pound puppy. He loves to run around with her while she chases his tail. Max has behaved significantly better around dogs. There are still some other dogs that he is not a fan of or overly interested in. It is important that you as the human decides who he does and doesn't say hi to. Keep in mind Max doesn't need to always say hi to everyone.

Pupdate 6/2/2022

Max has been doing so well with all his work he now is a good distraction for new training dogs. It also gives them the opportunity to learn from him, sometimes he’s like a teacher! He has been doing great off leash as well. I am proud of how far he’s come throughout his training process.

Pupdate 6/3/2022

Here is a preview of what Max’s final will look like. In this video he performs Come to Sit, Heel, Send away to Place, Extended Place/Sit and Extended Down. Max receives a lot of attention everywhere we go and complimented on how well behaved he is.

Max has lost a few pounds since he’s been with us. Which is great given his initial size and the amount of exercise he’s been doing. Since it’s taken him so long so shave off some pounds that leads us to believe that his food is filled with empty calories.

Pupdate 6/4/2022

Max had a relaxing day today before going home tomorrow. He also accompanied me while I went shopping. Max has been well behaved everywhere we go and he did really well weaving throughout the stores. He has been such a good boy and we can't wait to show you all of the progress he has made.
