Lucas, a one year old Cane Corso, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Board and Train program. He comes to us with previous training but lacks following commands, pulling on the leash while walking, not having a solid recall, and being over protective of the house. Over the three weeks Lucas will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Lucas is getting settled in at my home. He was a little hesitant to climb out the car when we first got home, but eventually hopped out. He got to meet the rest of my pack. He was very unsure of everyone. He barked and growled at them at first, but slowly warmed up to them. He hasn’t shown any interest in playing, but is able to be around them and be social.

Today Lucas and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We did a little overview of all his commands to see what he knows. Lucas did pretty well and obeyed all his commands. It does take him sometime to go into a sit, because of his back legs. I see that it hard for him to hold a sit, being too uncomfortable for him, so I had Lucas mostly go into a down position. We need more work on his heel command. He gets distracted with his surroundings and will try to pull or lead while walking. Not bad for his first day of training. He is finally warming up to the other dogs and showing his playful side. He made a new best friend, Franklin the Labradoodle. Lucas had so much fun running around and playing in the yard.

Today Lucas and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced more of the heel command and worked on his recall. I taught him two new commands, left and right. These commands are so he is able to work on both side of me. These commands will are helpful when Lucas is working alongside a wheelchair. He did very well and caught on to the new commands quickly. I brought out the wheelchair and had Lucas work on his left, right, and heel. It was a little tricky for him at first, but he ended up getting the hang of it.

Today Lucas and I went to Lowe’s to start working on his obedience around distractions. He was a bit distracted with the new surroundings. It was hard for him to focus in the beginning, but as we walked around and trained, Lucas was able to settle down and focus on his commands. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. Lucas is starting to get the hang of Left and Right. He understands left very well, but is still trying to figure out right. We I’ll continue to practice and improve.

Today lucas and I went to a local shopping center to work on his obedience. We practiced all his commands. We practiced some more with the wheelchair and working on Lucas’s left and right commands. I let him drag the leash around while we trained to see if we could start doing some off leash training. Lucas did okay. He got a mixed up a few times on his positions, but ended up fixing himself to the correct side. He is doing very well with holding his down command. Sit is uncomfortable for him, so I don’t make him hold it for very long.

Today Lucas and I went to the shopping outlets to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus. We were able to do some semi-off leash training! I let him drag the leash around while we worked. I worked on a new command, Stand, with Lucas. Since it’s too hard for him to go into or stay in a Sit, to make it more comfortable for him I want him to stand in place as I move around and distance myself. Lucas actually did well and caught on quickly to the new command.

Today Lucas and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced all his commands semi-off leash. I had Lucas train alongside the wheelchair. He is doing very well with the Stand command. Lucas had a few people pass by him while he was standing in place. He stayed put and just watched as they passed by. Lucas did a great job today!

Today Lucas and I went to the outdoor mall to work on his obedience around distractions. We practiced completely off leash. Lucas did okay. He was a bit distracted which made it hard for him to follow his commands. He got mixed up with his left and right commands. We will continue to practice and tighten up his commands, but not bad for Lucas’s first time off leash.

Today Lucas and I went to Lowes to train out of the rain and work on his obedience around distractions. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Lucas had other dogs to work around. We tried practicing off leash, but he was being pretty stubborn today. He tried to be defiant and not listen to his commands, but I made sure that he followed through and completed them. After some repetition he finally gave up and started to obey his commands the first time I would ask.

Today Lucas and I went to Los Cerritos mall to train out of the rain and work on his obedience around distractions. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Lucas had other dogs to work around. Lucas was a little nervous with the new surroundings, which made it hard for him to focus. We spent some time walking around the mall to get him to settle down and relax. Once he was calm, we were able to work semi-off leash. Lucas received many compliments on how well mannered he is. A person approached and asked if she could pet him. Lucas was a little shy and hesitant to be pet. Once I let him approach and smell the girl, he warmed up to her and enjoyed being pet.

Today Lucas wasn’t feeling too well and had an upset stomach. I noticed he had soft stool. I decided to let him take a break from training and relax for the day. I let him socialize and play with his friends. I added pumpkin to his meals to help settle his stomach and harden his stool. I will keep an eye on him and see how he is feeling tomorrow.
Pupdate 2/22/2024
Today Lucas seemed to be feeling much better; his stool back to normal. I took him to the outdoor mall to work on his obedience around distractions. Lucas practiced his commands completely off leash. He is doing very well with his distance and duration, except for his Sit which is understandable. It takes Lucas sometime to go into the Sit and is uncomfortable for him to stay in, so I don’t expect him to hold the Sit position. We had a few admirers that stopped to watch us train. He did a great job today!

Today Lucas and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. We worked on his food manners, teaching Lucas to wait patiently until given permission to eat. Just because the food is on the floor doesn’t mean it belongs to him or that he can eat it. We also worked on his door manners, teaching Lucas not to pass thresholds until given permission.

Today Lucas and I trained at home again. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play while we trained. Lucas was a little distracted at first, wanting to join in on all the fun with his buddies. After some repetition, he settled down and was able to focus. Once training was over I let Lucas have his playtime.

Today Lucas and I went to the park to work on his off leash obedience. We practiced all his commands while working with the wheelchair. Lucas did pretty well. He was focused and obedient. Only a few minor mistakes, switching to the wrong sides while heeling, but other than that he is doing an amazing job with his training!

Today Lucas and I went to the park to work on his off leash obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Lucas had plenty of dog distractions to work around. He was a little distracted in the beginning, but as we continued to work he was able to ignore the dogs and focus on his commands. Lucas is doing pretty well with his commands. The only struggle we are having is with heeling next to the wheelchair. He will walk next to it, but tends to veer too far away. We will continue to practice and tighten up his commands

Today Lucas and I stayed home to train. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I had his friends out be a distraction. Lucas did very well and stayed focused, even though he really wanted to go play. Once training was over I let him join in on the fun.
Pupdate 3/2/2024
Today Lucas took the day off from training and spent his last day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I am really proud of Lucas and the progress he has made over these three weeks! He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
