Loki | Beagle | South Gate, CA | In Training

Meet Loki! He's a four month old Beagle from South Gate, California here for our Three-Week Puppy Board and Train program! He is a very sweet pup, however he does have some issues with pulling on his leash, jumping, play biting, following basic commands, and he also needs some potty training! Over the next twenty one days we'll show Loki how to properly behave on leash and be the best pup he can possibly be! Stay tuned for Loki's three week transformation!

After I picked up Loki, we stayed at Hollydale Park for a little while to get to know him. Once we got home, I let him sniff around my house for a bit and played with him to try to get him used to staying here! So far, he's been a pleasure to have around. He whined and barked for a few minutes when he first went into his kennel, but he calmed down fairly quickly. Good first day for Loki!

Loki went to Pathfinder Park today for his first full day of training! We worked on his Heel command and his Come To Sit command. For Heel, I'd like Loki to walk on my left side, without pulling forward or falling behind too much. For Come To Sit, I want Loki to come to my right side, walk around my legs, and sit on my left side. He is starting to pick up these commands well for his first day! He is a very sensitive pup, and sometimes he wanted to quit, but with a little encouragement he ended up doing well with these commands!

Loki went to Almansor Park, and another trainer's house today for training. Loki had a rough start to the day and didn't want to start working in the morning. He threw a temper tantrum, vocalized, had a potty accident and even bit my hands in an attempt to not do anything. Loki, as most puppies and children, thinks throwing a tantrum will get him what he wants. When this happens we don't want to coddle him or give up on our task. This is like being compared to giving a lollipop to a child who didn't get their way. Instead we remain calm/neutral, and continue to follow through with the task at hand. Without consistency and follow through Loki won't learn wrong from right and continue to exacerbate his reactions. This is super important! After his temper tantrum he quickly tired himself out and he seemed happy the rest of the day. We then started working on his Place command. For Place I want Loki, to hop onto a raised object, such as a dog cot, and hold his position there. He's a small pup, so the objects I'll have him hop onto will be very low, but so far he did a good job with this!

Loki went to Almansor Park for most of his training today, and then we worked on some commands at home! He did fairly well at the park, although he was very distracted by all the lovely smells and birds! At home, we started working on his Down command. At first, Loki would try to bite me and swat at me when asked to Down, but he finally settled into it and began doing very well with this command!

Loki and I went to Legg Lake today for training! He was fairly well behaved, but still wanted to pull on his leash. He had a potty accident this morning, but he performed each of his commands, without too much of a fuss.

Loki went to Cheviot Hills Park today for training! There were a lot of new smells, and Loki was very excited to be there. Up until now, Loki has had trouble performing the Down command anywhere except in my home. Today, however, he seemed to be more receptive and willing to perform this command outside with plenty of distractions. I consider this a nice step forward for Loki today! Speaking of distractions, he was still very interested in the birds, people and other dogs. He still managed to behave himself for the most part. He still, unfortunately, had a potty accident on the way to the park. He is outside for around an hour each morning before we leave, so I must assume prefers to pee inside his crate. Whether that is because he feels safe inside the crate, or becomes stressed inside the crate, I have yet to determine.

Loki went to Century City Mall today for training. He did piddle a bit in his crate on the way, but he was fairly well behaved while we were there! We worked on each of his commands, and he performed most of them fairly reliably. The one he seems to be struggling with the most is his Heel. He wants to be able to walk wherever he wants rather than Heel with me. Good progress today, though!

Loki went to Almansor Park today for training! It was very busy with people playing all sorts of sports, so it was a bit of a challenge for Loki to stay focused. He was especially interested in people playing soccer, any time we got near a soccer ball he wanted to join in! He was able to perform his commands pretty well, though.

Loki and I went to Santiago Park today for training! He did a great job! He had an accident in his crate, but he performed his commands much more reliably than other days. I was most impressed by his Heel. Heel is the command he struggles with most, and he made a big improvement today.

Loki went to Century City Mall today! He was very excited to be there! Other than a little too much excitement, he did very well with his commands. In the above video, you'll see another trainer working with Loki on some commands. We do this to see if Loki will respond to the same commands from different people, or if he will only respond to me. He does a pretty good job in the video, although you can tell he's very excited to be working with a new friend, and he sometimes wants to play with her rather than work!

Loki and I went to Maple Park today for training! He was doing really well almost the whole time! He was behaving wonderfully and responding to each of his commands! He got a little too excited right at the end of his training, and had a minor temper tantrum, but after that he was great for the rest of the day! Also, Loki has had zero potty accidents so far today, and no accidents yesterday either! This is a big step forward with his potty training!

Loki went to Santiago Park today for training! He's doing quite well. No accidents last night, and none so far today! He did a great job with his commands today. As you can see in the above video, it seems like Loki is getting better at responding to commands from different people. A new trainer is working with him in today's video, and Loki does a very good job!

Loki and I went to the Outlets at Orange today for training! He was very excited to be there, but he behaved very well for most of the day. This area is one of the more populated places we've been, but Loki didn't seem to mind. He also managed to jump all the way into my car by himself today! He's tried to do so in the past, but his little legs weren't quite ready. Today he did it!

Loki and I went to Almansor Park today! It was lightly drizzling for some of the time we were there, and I don't think Loki liked it very much. He was a little grumpy for most of the day. Either he didn't like the rain, or he liked it a lot and was upset that I wouldn't let him play in it while we were working. In today's video, there's a point where Loki doesn't want to perform his Down command, and instead tries to bite at the leash and pull away from me. In this circumstance, I want Loki to work through his temper and perform the command, so I calmly continue to ask him to Down while giving some leash pressure in the directions I want him to move. Luckily, Loki worked through this and he behaved himself very well for the rest of the day! It's important to keep in mind it can be stressful being a puppy and even very sweet pups can have off days!

Loki went to The Block of Orange today! He was very well behaved through most of the day! I found he wanted to pull forward on his leash a little more, because he was so excited to be there. By the end of the day, however, he was Heeling with me very politely again! Loki has not had a potty accident in the last several days, so I think his potty training is going very well!

Loki and I went to Wilderness Park today for training! He did a fine job and behaved well early on, while we were mostly alone. Once a larger crowd of dogs started forming, Loki seemed to get overwhelmed and didn't want to work. He threw a temper tantrum for about a minute, then once he got most of that energy out of his system, he started responding again. He has become much better with these tantrums over the last two weeks, but I think today the number of pups around him was a little too exciting for Loki.

Loki went to Almansor Park today for training! He behaved very well. He worked well for quite a while, then started to get a little grumpy. However, when he got grumpy, I had him start working with another trainer, and he immediately perked up! I think his excitement to work with someone else had him particularly ready to work today!

Loki and I went to Legg Lake today for training! We worked on all of his commands and he got to see the trainer he worked with yesterday! He worked fairly diligently until he finally got tired and only wanted to play around. He behaved a little better than yesterday, so that's progress!

Loki went to Citadel Outlets today! He didn't seem to like it very much, as he became very grumpy fairly quickly. Luckily for Loki it was too hot today to stay out very long. We spent the rest of the day working inside, and Loki did very well!

Loki and I went back to Citadel Outlets today for training! He did a much better job today! The area was more crowded than yesterday, so that makes it even more impressive to me.

Loki and I went to Cheviot Hills Park today for his last full day of training! There was a soccer game going on which Loki seemed very interested in. For today's video, I wanted to show some of the manners we've been working on. For Loki's food manners, I want to be able to put food in front of Loki and have him wait until I'm ready for him to eat! For his car manners, I want Loki to hop into my car and walk straight into his kennel. Loki struggled with this one due to his size and the size of my car, so I'm very proud that he got so good at it! For Loki's greeting manners, I want him to be petted by a stranger without jumping on them!
