Meet Lanta! She's a five year old French Bulldog here for our One-Week Board and Train Program! She's a sweetie pie, and very friendly, but she has great difficulty following her basic commands. She also pulls on her leash sometimes and needs work on her manners. Over the next seven days, we will help Lanta with her obedience skills, teach her proper manners in and out of the house, and show her how to be the best pup she can possibly be! Stay tuned for Lanta's one week transformation!

After picking up Lanta, we stayed at the park for a few minutes to get to know each other. She pulled on the leash a little bit, but she was very sweet and mostly stuck with me as we walked. We started asking for some basic commands, which Lanta didn't seem to want to do. When it was time for us to leave, she got into her crate in my car with little hesitation, and she seemed comfortable on the drive home.

Once we got home, I let Lanta sniff around my house and we started to get her settled in. She mostly just wanted to follow me around. She seems to be getting comfortable here, and she's been very good so far!

In addition to her Pupdate video today, I'm adding an E collar tutorial video and a picture of the device for you to get familiar with how it works! I'll be introducing her to the device this evening and tomorrow.

Lanta and I went to Almansor Park today for training! I introduced her to the E collar last night and we started working on her commands. At the park today, we introduced her to the Heel and Come To Sit commands.

For Heel, I want Lanta to walk politely at my left side, without pulling forward, backward, or veering off in either direction. She didn't pull on her leash as much today, and she's learning the proper position, although she still veered off quite a bit whenever she wanted to sniff something.

For Come To Sit, I want Lanta to come to my right side, walk around my legs and sit at my left side with her ears in line with my leg. We first had to focus on her simple sit command, which is becoming easier as she gets more comfortable with me. She also started doing quite well at responding to the Come verbal command. She started coming right toward me with only a little hesitation. The tough part for her is putting all the motions together, and stopping in the perfect position. Great job today, Lanta!

Lanta and I went to Garfield Park this morning, then spent the hot afternoon inside. When we first started working on her commands, she got a little bit feisty and tried biting the leash. For this, we use the Off command. Off is our general "do not do" command, and we use it whenever Lanta presents unwanted behavior. If she jumps on you, gets distracted, or starts sniffing or chewing something she shouldn't, you can use Off! Her leash biting was surprising to me, since she has been very chill and relaxed so far. Once we got moving, she started doing much better.

We introduced her to the Place command today as well! For Place, I want Lanta to hop onto a raised object and remain there until I either release her from command or ask her to perform a different command. Unfortunately, all the benches and other objects at the park were a little too high for Lanta to hop onto, at least for now. Once we got home we started working more on the Place command. She picked up this command almost immediately. She loves it. In fact, I began having trouble recalling her from the place cot, and she started always wanting to go back to the place cot. In order to continue practicing Place, but also separate it from other commands, I started having her sit and wait for a few seconds before asking her to return to the cot, which you can see some of in the above video.

She's still having trouble piecing together the full Come To Sit command, but she did much better with it today. About half the time, I needed to help guide her with the leash, especially when asking for the Come To Sit away from the cot. She's starting to get it though!

Overall, she showed a lot of progress today, but also showed some of her more stubborn side at first!

Lanta and I went to Santa Monica Promenade today with her sister, Normi! When we first arrived, the only thing Lanta wanted to do was say hi to Normi. After some warm up time, she began performing much better. Her Heel, even with some distractions, is pretty strong, and her Come To Sit is getting better and better each day. Her Place was great, and she even started hopping up onto objects taller than before! I believe having Normi there gave her the courage to jump a little higher. Working on her Down command was a struggle for Lanta, as she was still uncomfortable in that more vulnerable position while in public. She's great with her Down command when it is on her comfy place cot, but adding the public setting and plenty of distractions was a little too much for today. We'll continue working on this and try to help her relax out in public.

Lanta and I went to Santa Anita Mall today! I wasn't sure how she would do, since this mall can get fairly crowded on Fridays. She needed some time to warm up to the place and struggled a bit when we started asking for commands, but she did well overall. I love how confident she became. The Promenade yesterday had plenty of people, but it was fairly wide open. The mall, however, required Lanta to politely walk by all kinds of people in relatively close proximity. She did very well with this. The distractions around the mall didn't seem to phase her. She's still struggling with her Down command, although once she performed it, she had very little trouble holding the position. People would walk close by when she was either sitting or laying down and she didn't seem bothered at all

Lanta and I went to Almansor Park today. We mostly worked on her Down command, because that is her weakest. Down can be tough because it puts your dog in a vulnerable position. At home, her Down is fairly good, but often when we're out in public around distractions, she still refuses. Today, she made a lot of progress with it, but she still needs some leash tension to lay fully down, although I'd like her to do it with only a verbal command. All her other commands, especially Heel and Place, are getting quite good!

For her video today, I wanted to go over one of her indoor manners we've been working on. For door manners, I want Lanta to wait patiently at the door and then walk out with me politely. Lanta had a tendency to try to dart out of the door as soon as I opened it, so this was tough for her at first. We practice this each time we go in or out, and it has slowly gotten easier for her. This same idea can also be applied to other thresholds, such as gates, fences, or even openings within the house. For example, the dogs aren't allowed in my kitchen, so we also practice respecting the threshold between my living room and kitchen. That particular one wasn't difficult at all for Lanta, since she likes to relax on the place cot anyway, and didn't show much interest in the kitchen.
