Krypto | Belgian Malinois Mix | La Cañada Flintridge, CA | In Training

Meet Krypto! He's an eight month old Belgian Malinois Mix from La Cañada Flintridge, California here for our Three-Week Board and Train Program. Krypto can be a handful around the house, as he loves to chew anything he gets his paws on. He sometimes play bites, nips, jumps on people, and he needs help with his basic obedience skills! He can also be reactive to some strangers and other dogs. Over the next twenty one days, we'll show Krypto how to properly behave on and off leash, teach him manners at home and in public, and show him how to be the best pup he can possibly be! Stay tuned for Krypto's three week transformation!

After picking up Krypto, we went to a park by my house! He seems to be taking to me fairly well. He did bark at a couple dogs while at the park. After the park, we went home and I let Krypto sniff around my house to get him used to staying here. He seems to be settling in well. I'm excited to start working with Krypto tomorrow morning!

Krypto and I went to William Peak Park for his first full day of training! We were around several other trainers and their dogs. Krypto was very distracted by the other dogs, but he generally behaved well. Krypto was introduced to several other trainers, and I noticed he really liked the female trainers and wagged his tail while they petted him, but he was rather skeptical of the men. We worked on Krypto's Heel command today. For Heel, I want Krypto to walk nicely on my left, with his ears at my knee. He's picking this up fairly quickly! We also worked on his Sit command. He seems to know how to sit, but I'd like him to sit immediately when asked and hold the position for a little longer.

Krypto and I went to Almansor Park today for training! His Heel seems to be getting better, and he's managing to hold his Sit for a little longer without moving. He managed to walk with me nicely for most of the time, but he got very distracted by some squirrels! So far, Krypto is progressing very well.

Krypto and I went to Maple Park today! He did a good job throughout most of the day, although there were two dogs he barked at. These were both very small dogs. It seems Krypto doesn't have much issue with larger dogs, but looks at the small dogs like they are toys. Other than that, Krypto did a great job! We started working on his Come To Sit command. For this command, I want him to come to my right side, walk around my legs and sit at my left side with his ears at my knee. He's learning this very quickly!

Krypto and I went to Citadel Outlets today for training! He is getting very good with the commands he's learned so far. He barked at one little dog. When he does this, I use the Off command. This is our "do not do" command, and can be used in a variety of situations. If Krypto jumps, play bites, barks, or starts to chew on something, I'll be using the Off command! He's learning this command very well so far! Other than barking at that one dog, Krypto did a very good job at the outlets. He's becoming very responsive and attentive while we work!

Krypto and I went to the Santa Monica Promenade today for training! He was pretty excited at first, but managed to calm down throughout our time there. We met with another trainer, who Krypto liked and tried to jump on. Again, any time Krypto jumps or tries to do something I don't want him to do, I use the Off command, along with a small stimulation from his E collar. We worked on his Down command today also, he didn't want to lay down when asked at first, but as you can see in today's video, he's getting pretty good at it!

Krypto and I went to Almansor Park today for training! He was well behaved and didn't bark at any dogs! We worked on the commands he's learned so far, and he did well. His Come To Sit is very good now. He got tons of exercise and he took a nice long nap after the park.

Krypto and I went to Pan Pacific Park today for training! He made some good progress today. We worked on his Place command. For Place, I want Krypto to hop up onto a raised object, such as a bench, and remain there until I either release him, or ask him to perform another command. He was skeptical at first, but he's starting to get it! We also started having Krypto perform his commands with his leash dragging. Allowing the leash to drag lets me see how Krypto might do off leash, while still having access to the leash should I need it. He still gets distracted, but he's doing a good job with this so far!

Krypto and I went to La Bonita Park today! We continued working with his leash dragging. He did a much better job at ignoring other dogs than he has in past days. We worked on his Send Away To Place command. This command is just like the Place command, but I want to add some distance between us and the object. As you can see in the above video, he's getting the hang of this! He's able to go to the place object with several feet between us, and we'll keep working to increase that distance. Great job today, Krypto!

Krypto and I went to Home Depot today for training! He was very confident and competent and we didn't have any issues with the few dogs who were there. He seems to be getting much better at being able to ignore distractions.

Krypto and I went to Citadel Outlets today for training. He's still doing a great job with his commands, but he's still getting very distracted by small dogs. We worked on all of the commands he's learned so far, and introduced the Come To Heel command. This command is similar to Come To Sit, but I want Krypto to go directly into a Heel instead of stopping and sitting. In today's video, you can see me using the Come To Heel command in conjunction with the Send Away to Place command to practice what we call "place to place" where Krypro goes from one place object to another.

Krypto and I went to Pan Pacific Park today for training! I chose this location for today because it usually has a ton of dogs running around. We spent a lot of time working around small dogs, and one even approached Krypto. He managed to hold his sit, and he didn't bark or lunge at the dog. He was very tempted, but he pulled through! He did, however, bark at a passing fire truck, I believe I've had him around sirens before with no reaction, so this was a surprise to me. He didn't pull or try to run, he simply barked. Great job all day, though! We also worked on his Under command. For this command, I want Krypto to crawl underneath an object such as a bench. He picked this up very quickly!

Krypto and I went to The Santa Monica Pier today for training. He did a pretty good job! There were some dogs nearby and he did a good job around them. In this video, you'll see Krypto perform his Under command a couple of times. He's learning very quickly, and he can do it with little to no leash pressure. After the pier we went to the park where Krypto got more exercise. He got a little bit excited, but he behaved very well!

Krypto and I went to Almansor Park today for training. He had somewhat of an off day, and I found he was reacting to noises and distractions much more than he usually does. I was planning on letting him off leash today, however, he seemed much too excitable to try it today. Once we left the park, he calmed down and got back to his normal self. We'll try this again tomorrow!

Krypto did much better today at Almansor Park, and he was able to go off leash! He performed all of his commands well. There were times when his attention was aimed at other dogs, but he managed to hold his positions. In the above video, you can see how excellent he is behaving in the first half. At about the halfway point, a small dog walks by and gains his attention. I use the Off command to keep him focused on me, but you can still see how his responsiveness declines after the other dog appears. Krypto still did a great job!

Krypto and I went to Whittier Narrows Park today for training! He was offleash and did a great job with his commands. He would whine when other dogs where present, but managed to hold his positions and still respond to his commands. I believe Krypto felt he should have been able to freely approach other dogs since he's off leash, hence the frustrated whining. It's important to keep consistent with your boundaries whether your dog is on leash or off leash! Other than his whining, Krypto did a brilliant job today!

Krypto went to Almansor Park today for training! It wasn't very busy there, and Krypto did a really good job. For his video today, I'm showing his food manners! I want Krypto to be able to sit or lay down and wait patiently when I place food on the ground in front of him. He's doing a good job of ignoring the food until I release him!

Krypto went to Cheviot Hills today! He started off a little bit too excited. He wanted to play, especially with the other dog I'm currently training, and started whining to try to get me to allow that. He started calming down after the first few minutes and he ended up doing a great job for the rest of the day! We worked on all of his commands off leash, with plenty of other dogs around. After training, we went to another park near my house where he got his playtime and more exercise!

Krypto went to Citadel Outlets today for training! He did very well. There were tons of distractions, but far fewer dogs than other areas, so he hardly made any mistakes at all. Great job! Later, we went to Almansor Park to run and play for a while.

Krypto went to the Santa Monica Pier today for training! He was excited to be there for the first few minutes, but quickly calmed down and got to work! In the above video, Krypto goes through each of his commands. He does a great job with each, and he is able to hold his positions around quite a few distractions. Really good job! After the pier we went to the park for some playtime as a reward for his hard work.

Krypto had a fun day at the park for his last full day of training! We continued to work on his commands, but he mostly got time to play and exercise. For his video today, I want to show more of the manners we've been working on. For greeting manners, I want Krypto to sit while he's being petted without trying to jump up on people. This was tough for him, but he's getting much better! For his door manners, I want Krypto to wait while I open the door without him trying to rush through. He's good at this one, although it also took time for him to get the hang of it. For car manners, I want Krypto to hop into my car when asked and walk directly into his kennel. Krypto got this one fairly easily, as he quickly realized getting into the car meant we were going somewhere fun! Krypto has been a pleasure to work with over last few weeks, and I'm going to miss having him. I'm so proud of him and the progress he's made!
