Koda, a one year old Husky, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Board and Train program. Koda comes to us knowing his commands, but struggles with following them when distracted. He lacks a good recall when distracted, pulls on the leash while walking, and is very excitable and reactive when seeing other dogs. Over the three weeks Koda will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Koda is settling in well at my home. He got to meet a few of the pack members. He found a new best friend that is just as energetic and wild as him. He has been running around and playing non stop since he got here.

Today Koda and I went to the park to work on his obedience. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, Place, and Heel. Koda did very well and caught on quickly to the place command. Heel is still a work in progress, but he is doing better at staying close to my side and being more focused on me. Koda did a great job on his first day of training!
The first video is an ecollar tutorial. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but you will receive an ecollar kit on the day of Koda’s turnover. Please watch this video as many times as you need to be come more familiar with the training collar.

Today Koda and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We practiced more of Sit, Down, Place, and Heel. We need more work on his duration. Koda will sit or down for a short period of time, then will break if distracted or gets bored. We will continue to practice and progress. We also worked on his puppy push-ups (sits and down). I want to start perfecting those commands for when I start asking him from a distance.

Today Koda and I went down to the beach to work on his obedience around distractions. For the most part he did very well. He followed all his commands. Heel was a little struggle. Koda kept trying to walk slightly ahead of me instead of staying at my side. He definitely was distracted by every dog we encountered, but when I told him ‘off’ he would look away and would go back to focusing on his training.

Today Koda and I went to a local shopping center to work on his commands around light distractions. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. Koda did very well. I love how focused he is on me and watches where I go, instead of worrying about our surroundings. I was even able to drop the leash while we practiced Heel. Koda stayed at my side without trying to lead ahead. We practiced come to sit. This is where Koda will come around my right side and sit nicely in the heel position. Koda did very well and caught on quickly to his new command.

Today Koda and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. Koda did very well. He was focused and obedient. The only area he got a little distracted in was the Garden area. Koda wanted to stop and sniff every flower and plant. We tried doing some semi-off leash work, but he kept trying to walk a little too far away from me every time I dropped the leash. So, we practiced mostly on Koda’s heeling to get him to stay closer at my side.

Today Koda and I went to a local school playground to work on his obedience. We worked on all his commands. We practiced his puppy push ups and started adding distance. I back tied Koda so he would stay in on spot as I moved farther away from him. Koda was a little frustrated he couldn’t move closer to me, but he did well. We will continue to practice and get better so we can remove the back tie.

Today Koda and I went to the park to work on his commands. Koda did well until we came across other dog distractions. He would fixate on them, which made it hard for him to follow my commands. So we worked at a distance from the dog distractions, which made it easier for Koda. He still was able to see them, but able to focus and follow commands. We will continue to work around more dog distractions so Koda can become more desensitized when seeing new dogs.

Today Koda and I went to the park to work on his commands. We worked more on his sits and downs with distance. He did very good! I didn’t have to back tie him to anything. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Koda was able to train around other dog distractions. He was a little distracted as all the other dogs worked around him, but he was still able to focus and follow his commands.

Today Koda and I joined me on a little shopping spree at the mall. It was pretty busy, so Koda had plenty of distractions to work around. He did very well. Koda had a few admirers that stopped to watch us train. He received a few compliments on how well mannered he is.

Today Koda and I went to the mall to work on his obedience. He was a little distracted with the new surroundings, so it was hard for him to focus. As we walked around and trained, Koda was able to settle down and follow his commands. We worked semi-off leash. We worked on his sits and downs at a distance. Koda received a compliment from a woman who was very impressed with his obedience. He sat nicely and patiently while the woman pet him.

Today Koda and I went to a shopping center to work on his off leash obedience. We practiced two new commands: Send away to Place and Under. Koda caught on pretty quickly to Send away to Place. Under was a little more tricky for him, but we will continue to practice.

Today Koda and I went to the Outlets to work on his off leash obedience around distractions. He did very well around the people distractions, but once there was a dog distraction it was hard for Koda to stay focused. We met with another OffLeash SoCal trainer and his dog, so Koda was able to work through another dog distraction. At first it was a little hard to get his attention and get him to follow commands. All he wanted to do was watch the other dog, but I made sure he followed through with his commands. After a little time of training Koda became less interested in her and went back to focusing on me and his commands. Koda had quite a few admirers that were very impressed with his off leash obedience.

Today Koda had in upset tummy. I noticed he had some soft stool. We stayed home to train and we did some light work. We practiced his distance sits and downs. We also worked on his door manners, teaching Koda to not pass thresholds until given permission. I added some anti diarrhea liquid to his meals to help settle his tummy. I will keep an eye on him and see how he is feeling tomorrow.

Today Koda and I went to the park to work on his off leash obedience. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. He did very well with staying focused and following his commands, even with dog and horse distractions around us. We tried something new, going into a down command while in heel. This was a bit tricky for Koda, but he started to get the hang of it.

Today Koda and his buddy, Ellie, went to Lowe’s to work on their off leash obedience around distractions together. They both worked very well together as a pack. They were focused and obedient. Koda received a few compliments today from employees and customers on how well mannered he is. We tried practicing some more of heel into a down. This is still a little tough for Koda, but we will keep practicing.

Today Koda and I took a drive out to Venice to work on his off leash obedience around distractions. It was quite busy, so we had plenty of distractions to work around. He was a little overwhelmed with our surroundings, but he did very well following his commands. He was interested in all the passing dogs, but stayed focused and stayed in command. Koda got a little startled by a small dog that barked at him. He broke his down command and went into a sit. I told Koda ‘off’ and put him back in to the down position. Koda followed my command, lied down and watched the little dog pass by as it continued to bark at him.

Happy Thanksgiving! Today Koda and I trained at home. We worked on all his commands. He spent the rest of the day socializing and playing with his friends. I gave him a bath, but it didn’t last very long. Koda wrestled around with his buddies getting all dirty again.

Today Koda and I stayed home to train. We practiced his commands. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. We worked on food and door manners: 1) teaching him not to pass thresholds until given permission and 2) teaching Koda to wait patiently for his food until given permission to eat.

Today Koda took the day off from training and spent his last day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I noticed he had some soft stool today. I fed him pumpkin and white rice to help settle his tummy and soak up whatever is in his stomach. Koda has done such a great job with his training! He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
