Kira | Husky | Irvine, CA | In-Training

Writer's picture: Amanda LascariAmanda Lascari

Kira, a two year old Husky, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Kira comes to us with little knowledge of commands, being easily, distracted, not walking properly on leash, jumping to greet, and being reactive towards other animals. Over the two week Kira will be working on her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress.

Kira is settling in well at my home. She is getting acquainted with all her new doggie friends. She hasn't joined in on the playing, but is socializing well with them.

Today Kira and I went the park to work on her commands. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Come, and Heel. Heel is still a work in progress, but she is walking better, staying closer to my side. I noticed she had soft stool today. I added anti-diarrhea liquid to her meals. I will keep an eye on her and see how she is feeling tomorrow.

Today Kira and I worked on her obedience commands at home. We practiced more of come, sit, and heel. We worked on a new command, Place. She did a great job and caught on quickly to her new command. Her stool is looking better, but not fully back to normal. I added more liquid to her meals.

Today Kira and I stayed home to train. We practiced more of Sit, Come, and Place. We also worked on the Down command. It's not her favorite command to do. Her stool is looking back to normal.

Today Kira and I went to Lowes to work on her commands around distractions. She was a little distracted when we first arrived but as we walked around and practiced her commands, she was able to settle down and focus. We practiced a new command, Come to Heel. This command is a bit tricky, but Kira is starting to get the hang of it.

Today Kira and I went to the park to work on her commands. We practiced semi-off leash. I let her drag the leash around while we trained. She was being a bit stubborn today. She gave me a hard time with the down command, but I made sure she followed through.

Today Kira and I went to a local shopping center to work on her commands around distractions. We worked semi-off leash. She did very well. She wasn't as stubborn as she was yesterday. She received a few compliments, from people passing by, on how well behaved she is.

Today we walked down to Starbucks for some exposure to a busy street, plus the engagement of humans while at Starbucks.Ā  On the walk Kira did well to stay in heel only going ahead for briefĀ periods before returning to the proper heel position.Ā  Kira is responsive, but not sensitive to the E-Collar, so she still needs reminding of what heel is and to sit when asked.

The walk to and back from Starbucks is four miles in total.Ā  I like to reward everyone with a Pupcup that they shared (pics). This afternoon and again this evening we will be off leash heeling through my neighborhood (approx. 1.3 miles).Ā  I'll be looking for Kira to perform all the commands, heel, sit, down, place, while being off leash.

Today, we again walked down to the Starbucks in the morning.Ā  While it was only drizzling when we headed out it soon turned to actual rain and then rain with wind.Ā  We didn't actually make it to the Starbucks falling short by a few hundred yards;Ā  then we turned back and headed home.Ā  Kira was OFF LEASH the entire time.Ā  She did well staying in heel or returning to the heel position when asked to.Ā  The louder than normal cars and trucks didn't seem to bother her at all.Ā  She did have an incident with a cactus; Kira is very curious and lets her nose lead her astray sometimes.

This afternoon we headed to Home Depot for more work.Ā  Kira again does well off leash, needing only occasional corrections.Ā  She does have the nose issue combined with an ongoing need to greet everyone ever!Ā  Kira does need to be reminded when in crowds to stay in heel, and not greet those that don't want to be greeted.

We will be doing the evening walk again tonight.Ā  Kira eats everything she is given.

An addendumĀ to yesterday/last night's Pupdate, Kira encountered a coyote while out on the walk.Ā  Kira could hear the coyotes causing a disturbance with another dog or dogs on a different block, but she was definitely on high alert.Ā  She did manage to stay in heel for more than a mile walk with all the distractions.

Today Kira and I went to the mall to work on her offleash obedience. The mall was pretty busy, so Kira had a good amount of people distractions to work around. She did an amazing job being off leash! She was very focused and obedient. She had many admirers stop to watch her train. She received many compliments and lots of affection from people.

Today Kira had an easy day of training. We went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. She spent the rest of the day playing and socializing with her friends before she goes home tomorrow. She can't wait to show you everything she has learned!
