Kaiju | Great Dane | Los Angeles, CA | In-Training

Kaiju, a two year old Great Dane, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Kaiju went through off leash training back home in Montana. He does know his commands, but now that he is staying in LA he is a little overwhelmed and distracted with the busy LA environment. Kaiju loves other dogs but approaches a little too strong, intimidating other dogs with size and energy. Over the week Kaiju will be refreshing him on his on leash obedience around high distractions. Check in to see his progress!

Kaiju is settling in well at my home. He got to meet all of my pack. He greeted everyone nicely, but because of his size he scared a few of his friends. He has a new best friend, Mora the Husky/Shepherd. They have enjoyed running around and chasing each other all day. I am letting Kaiju get adjusted to his new surroundings today. Tomorrow we will start his training.

Today Kaiju and I went to the park to train and so I could see where he is at with his obedience. He did a great job following all his commands. His heel command is pretty good, but we can tighten it up a little. Kaiju tries to walk a little ahead which means heā€™s not paying attention to where I am going. We want his ears right next to our leg that way I know his eyes can see where my legs are moving. Since he knows all his commands we practiced a new one, Come to Heel. This is where Kaiju comes around my right side to my left and sits in the heel position. It was a little tricky for him at first, but Kaiju is starting to get the hang of it.

Today Kaiju and I went to Loweā€™s to work on his obedience around distractions . He did very well. He was focused and followed all of his commands. The only thing that distracted Kaiju was the Halloween monsters. He was not a big fan of those. Kaiju had a few admirers complimented him on his good manners.

Today Kaiju and I stayed home to train. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. We also practiced his food and door manners.

The benefits of food manners is:

-Impulse control-Waiting for food helps your dog learn patience

-Reducing Anxiety and possessiveness- Good food manners can help reduce your dog's excitement, anxiety, or possessiveness around food.

-Not eating things heā€™s not supposed to- good food manners will teach her not to grab and eat things off the floor. Just because there is food on the floor does not mean it belongs to him.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.)Ā Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take him out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.Ā

Today Kaiju and I went to the outdoor shopping mall to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little nervous when we first arrived, but was able to stay focused and follow his commands. It was a little difficult to train with Kaiju being the center of attention. He was a celebrity for the day. Everyone stopped to greet him and take photos with him.Ā

Today Kaiju and I went to the park to work on his obedience commands. The park was a little quiet, so we were able to work on Kaijuā€™s focus. He was a very good boy and followed all his commands the first time I asked him.Ā

Today Kaiju took the day off from training. He spent the day relaxing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I am very proud of Kaiju and the progress he has made this week! He cannot wait to go home and show you everything he learned!
