Javier | Miniature Schnauzer | In-Training

Javier, a four month old Miniature Schnauzer, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Puppy Board and Train program. Javier comes to us with typical puppy behavior: jumping to greet, little knowledge of commands, being easily distracted, not walking properly on leash, and separation anxiety. Over the three weeks Javier will be working on his on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Javier has made himself right at home. He is having a blast with all his new friends. He has been playing and running around nonstop since heā€™s been here.

Today Javier and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced Sit, Place, and Heel. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Javier had plenty of dog distractions to work around. He caught on very quickly to the Place command. Heel is still a work in progress but he is walking much better. We are working on his separation anxiety. He will throw a little tantrum when I put him away in his crate and leave him alone. It doesnā€™t last for long, only about 3 minutes and he stops and relaxes or goes to sleep.

Today Javier and I went to Loweā€™s to work out of the heat and start working around distractions. He was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained Javier was able to relax and focus on his commands. He was very obedient and well behaved will training with my sister. We are making some progress with his separation anxiety. We had no tantrums when I put Javier away in his kennel. He doesnā€™t want to go in, but once he is put away there is no barking or howling. He lays down and takes a nap.

Today Javier and I trained at home. We started working on a new command, Come To Sit. It is still a work in progress. This command is a little tricky for Javier. He is doing well with the rest of his commands. He is getting better with his duration and distance.

Today JavierĀ  and his friends, Maisie and Sasha, joined me on a little shopping spree at the mall. They worked on their obedience as a pack. Javier was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus back on his commands. He was a little stubborn with heel. He would walk at my side, but would try to pull away to say hi to every person we passed by. He did very well with another dog that was trying to bark and pull its way towards us. Javier looked at the dog, but stayed focused and continued on with his heel command.

Today I took Javier to a local shopping center to work on his commands. He did better today, staying more focused since there wasnā€™t too many people distractions. Javier is doing very well with his duration and distance.

Today Javier stayed home to train. We worked on all his obedience commands. We worked on his distance and duration. My sister assisted me with working Javier. Javier practiced his door manners, teaching him not to pass thresholds until given permission.

Today Javier and I went to the park to work on his commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Javier had plenty of dog distractions to work around. He did pretty well. He was a little distracted by the other dogs, but I made sure he followed through with his commands. I noticed Javier was scratching a lot. He had an irritation on his chest and front armpits. Not sure if he was allergic to the grass at the park and it irritated his skin, but I bathed him with medicated shampoo and conditioner to help soothe his skin and stop the itch. The bath helped a lot, soothed his skin and relieved him from trying to scratch. I will keep an eye on it and see how it looks tomorrow.

Today Javier and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I took him to the nail salon. Javier waited patiently while I got my nails done. Everyone loved him there. They said he was so cute and well behaved.

Today Javier and I spent the day down at the beach. He worked on his commands around a lot of distractions. He did well around the people, bikes, and skateboards. Javier was a little distracted with other dogs. He would sometimes stay in command while they passed by, and other times he would get too excited and break command to try and say hi. Javier received a few compliments on how well behaved he is. He sat nicely while being pet.

Javierā€™s irritation on his tummy is looking better.

The medicated baths are helping a lot with calming the skin and relieving the itch. He still has some bumps on his skin, the redness is completely gone. I will continue to keep an eye on it. If the bumps are still lingering in the next two days, Javier and I will take a trip to the vet for some medicine.

Today Javier and I went back down to the beach to work on his obedience. He did very well. He was more focused and less worried about the distractions around us.
