Jackson | Golden Retriever | Los Angeles, CA | In-Training

Jackson, a one year old Golden Retriever, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. He comes to us with little knowledge of obedience commands, not walking properly on leash, being anxious out in public, having reactivity towards other dogs, and chewing on things he’s not suppose to. Over the two weeks Jackson will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Jackson is getting settled in at my home. He got to meet a few of the pack members here. He is a bit cautious and tense around them, but hasn’t shown any reactivity. He hasn’t tried being playful yet, but is okay socializing with the other dogs.

Today Jackson and I went to the park to work on his commands. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Jackson had other dog distractions to work around. He was definitely interested in the other dogs, but did not try to lung towards or bark at them. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. He caught on the Place command quickly. We need more work on his duration. It is difficult for Jackson to hold a command for a period of time. We  will keep practicing, but he did great for his first day of training!

Today Jackson and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, and Place commands. We worked on a new command, Heel. Heel is still a work in progress, but Jackson is walking much better; staying closer to my side and focusing on where I am walking. Jackson encountered a horse today while at the park. He was a very good boy and just sat and watched the horse as it walked by us.

Today Jackson and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus on his commands. We worked on his duration Sits and Downs. You can see it’s difficult for Jackson to stay put, specially if I try to walk in a circle around him. After some repetitions Jackson started getting the hang of it. We are still working on his distance. Jackson did a great job heeling throughout the store, even as we passed by people.

Today Jackson joined me on a little Christmas shopping spree at the outdoor mall. It was pretty busy, so Jackson had plenty of distractions to work around. He was a bit distracted at first, but as we walked around and trained he became more focused. He did very well when seeing other dogs. We were able to pass by smoothly without him trying to pull towards them or bark. Jackson did a great job today!

Today Jackson and I trained at home. We focused on distance and duration. I like to use the place cot when working on holding commands. Jackson knows he has to stay on that object, even if I walk around or distance from him. I also want him to stay put even if I walk behind him or out of his eye sight. You can see in the video that he wants to spin around to watch me. After some repetition Jackson starts to get the hang of it and stays in position as I make full circles around him. We also practiced his come to sit. This is where Jackson must come around my right side and sit on my left side in the heel position. He did very well and caught on to his new command quickly.

Today Jackson and I went to the park to work on his commands. We worked on his distance and duration. Jackson did very well! We were able to practice semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we trained. We need to tighten up a few of his commands and then Jackson will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Jackson and I went to a local shopping center to work on his commands around distractions. He did pretty well workin semi-off leash. He was full of energy and a bit excitable, which made it hard for him to hold his commands or stay focused. As we continued to train Jackson was able to settle down and focus on his commands. He does very well holding his down position, but sit is still a work in progress. He getting better as I walk around him, until I try to distance myself from him. You can see in the video if I am too far and try to walk behind him, Jackson will try to spin around so he could see me. After some reps he was able to hold his sit while move around him. We will continue to practice and get better. I noticed Jackson’s ear seemed to be bothering him. It looked a little pink, so I put in ear wash with aloe Vera to clean out and soothe it. I will continue to keep an eye on it

Today Jackson and I stayed home to train. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play while we trained. Jackson did very well and stayed focused on me and his commands. We also worked on his door manners, teaching him not to pass thresholds until given permission. We also practiced food manners, having Jackson wait patiently until given permission to eat his food.

Today Jackson and I went to the park to work on commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Jackson had other dog distractions to work around. He was reactive towards other dogs that were reactive towards him. If the dogs were low energy and didn’t pay attention to him, Jackson would be fine. We will continue to practice around more dog distractions to get him desensitized when other dogs are present.

Today Jackson and I went to the mall to work on his off leash obedience around distractions. He did very well today. He was a little excited, but still able to focus and follow his commands. Jackson did very well heeling through the crowds of people, especially around small children. We had a few little kids that tried to run up to him. Jackson looked at them, but went back to following his commands. There were a couple of dogs that we came across at the mall. One was a service dog, calm energy and payed no attention to Jackson. Jackson saw the dog but when I told him ‘off’ he broke his focus on the dog and continued on with our heel. There were two little happy dogs inside a stroller that surprised Jackson. He didn’t know where the barking was coming from. Once again, I told him ‘off’ and Jackson looked away and went back to focusing on his training. Jackson received lots of compliments today on his good manners.
