Izzy | Shepherd/Malinois Mix | Manhattan Beach, CA | In-Training

Writer: Amanda LascariAmanda Lascari

Izzy, a one year old Shepherd/Malinois Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our One Week Board and Train program. She comes to us knowing her commands but not always following them, being leash reactive towards dog, and being protective of the family. Over the week Izzy will be working on her on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress.

Izzy is settling in at my home. I introduced her to some of my dogs. She is a little timid and shy right now. She isn’t interested in playing but is okay socializing with everyone. I am going to let her spend the rest of the day settling in and getting adjusted to her new surroundings. Tomorrow we will begin her training.

Today Izzy and I went to the park to work on her commands. We met with other Offleash Socal Trainer and their dogs, so she had plenty of dog and people distractions to work around. Surprisingly, she wasn’t reactive at all. She was actually very timid and unsure of her surroundings. She did a good job, staying focused and following all her commands.

Today Izzy and I went to Lowe’s to work on her obedience around distractions. She was a little timid with all the noise and commotion going on around us, but was still able to focus and follow her commands. She did very well around all the people distractions. She didn’t bark or growl at anyone. She did really well. I was even able to drop the leash and move around while we practiced her duration Sits and Downs.

Today Izzy and I went to the shopping outlets to work on her obedience around distractions. She was a bit timid, but still able to focus on her commands. She did a great job staying calm around other dog distractions, even ones that were barking at her. Izzy had quite a few admirers that watched her train. She received a few compliments on how well mannered she is.

Today Izzy and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. We also worked on her food and door manners.

The benefits of food manners is:

-Impulse control-Waiting for food helps your dog learn patience

-Reducing Anxiety and possessiveness- Good food manners can help reduce your dog's excitement, anxiety, or possessiveness around food.

-Not eating things she’s not supposed to- good food manners will teach her not to grab and eat things off the floor. Just because there is food on the floor does not mean it belongs to her.

The benefits of door manners is:

-Impulse control at thresholds- Typically the door causes excitement for a dog because they know they are going out (outside, for a ride, for a walk, etc.) Waiting at a doorway puts your dog in a calmer state of mind and you are able to have more control of the dog when you take him out.

-Safety- Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds will prevent bolting.

Today Izzy and I went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. We walked through some of the stores. She did a great job! She was focused and obedient. Izzy received a compliment from one of the customers, saying how impressed she is with Izzy’s obedience and wishes her dogs could behave just as good. The woman wanted to give Izzy some pets, but I could tell Izzy was too timid.

Today Izzy and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. She spent the rest of the day playing with her best friend, Mora, before she goes home tomorrow. Izzy can’t wait to go home and show you everything she has learned!
