Meet Hank! He is a two year old French Bulldog who has joined us for our One Week Board and Train Program. Hank is here for basic obedience and leash pulling. He is a little stubborn and does not listen to commands. Over the next seven days, Hank will work on becoming a well behaved pup to match his sweet personality!
Hank and I settled in at home and I had him roam around the house so he can adjust to his new surroundings. To get further acquainted, I took Hank for a walk around my neighborhood. Since he pulls on his walks, I introduced him to Heel. Heel is having Hank walk next to me on my left side. We worked on it by using leash tension and doing the opposite of what Hank does. For instance, every time he would pull, I turned around and went the opposite direction. Hank is doing very well and is understanding the concept! We will continue working on it as it is going to be used for every walk we go on.
Hank was introduced to Place at a local park we drove out to today. Place is having Hank getting onto an elevated object and having him remain on the object in a Sit or a Down. This technique can be used to build his confidence and can also be used if there are guests coming over. Given Hank’s size, we practiced on low objects that are easy for him to hop on and off from without stressing his legs. Hank has the confidence and did really well by understanding the concept of Place!
Hank and I worked on Come to Sit today. It is the recall technique that consists of having Hank come towards my right, go around behind me, and Sit on my left. The first few sessions we practiced, Hank would come towards me and he would either stop or try to jump on my leg. I guided him to go behind me by crouching, and by using a little leash tension, I had Hank come all the way around towards my left. The more we worked on it, the more Hank understood what I was asking and is getting better as we move along!
Hank was introduced to Down today. Teaching Down requires patience considering that it can make a dog feel vulnerable being down on all four. To assist Hank in learning this technique, I used his kibble and slight leash tension as guidance to help him follow through. I asked Hank to Sit and I began luring him towards the ground. As his frontal part would come down, his back end would sit up. After a few attempts, I began to use my free hand to gently press on his back to keep Hank from getting up. It took a little time and patience, but Hank was successful in learning Down!
Hank has been working on his Food Manners throughout the time he has been in training. His first day here, as soon as I placed his bowl down, he was already coming towards it to eat. Since then, Hank has learned to wait in a Sit or a Down until I let him know it is ok to eat. He has reached an expected goal of ninety seconds, but Hank can increase that time with patience and consistency!
Hank and I took a trip to the Santa Monica Pier today. We worked on his Final video which will consist of everything he has learned throughout the time he has been in training with me. Hank did an outstanding job and has learned so much in just a short amount of time! He received lots of praise on his good behavior and he was also complimented for his picture poses!
Hank has completed his One Week Board and Train Program and is now ready to come home! It was a pleasure having Hank with me this past week and I am looking forward to showing you everything he has learned! Thank you for trusting me with Hank! He will be missed! His Final video will be coming soon, but here is a little peek at Hank working on his Door Manners!
