Genie | Saint Bernard | Redondo Beach, CA | In-Training

Genie, a three year old Saint Bernard, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Genie comes to us knowing some commands but listens when she wants to. She knows her weight and strength, when she doesn’t want to do something Genie will lay down and not move. She will jump to greet or lean into people and will potty inside the house. Over the two weeks Genie will be working on her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Genie is settling in well at my home. She was a little shy, at first, when meeting all her new doggie friends. She stood back and watched everyone play. She eventually warmed up to them and started being more social. Genie saw everyone having fun in the doggie pool decided to join in on the fun.

Today Genie and I went to the park to work on her commands. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit and Heel. Genie can be very stubborn when she doesn’t want to listen. She tried plopping down a few times to try and get out of not doing her commands, but i made sure she followed through with what I asked of her. I noticed she has white lump on her tongue. You can see it on the very first photo of Genie’s blog. I also added a close photo. I wanted to make sure you were aware of this.

Today Genie and I went to back to the park to work on her commands. We practiced more of her Sit and Heel commands. She didn’t put up as much of a fight today. We worked on two new command, Place. She did very well and caught on to Place command quickly. Down wasn’t very hard either. I think that’s probably her favorite command by far.

Today Genie and I went to Lowe’s to work on her commands. She did pretty well being out in public. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. She is getting better with her Sit command and not giving me such a struggle. Genie was like a celebrity today. The employees and customers wanted to pet her and take pictures with her.

Today Genie and I went to the mall to work on her obedience around distractions. We had a lot of distractions with all the Black Friday shoppers. Genie worked a lot on her duration sits and downs because everyone wanted to meet her. She was more exhausted from receiving all the attention than from training. Genie did very well today!

Today Genie and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We worked on her distance and duration. We were able to work semi-off leash. I let her drag the leash around while we trained. Genie did pretty well. A few times she tried to lay down when she didn’t want to listen, but I made sure she followed through with her commands.

Today Genie and I went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. We did some more semi-off leash training. She did a good job. We just need to tighten up a few of her commands and soon Genie will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Genie and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Genie had other dog distractions to work around. She did very well around the other dogs. Genie really didn’t have any interest in them. She was a little stubborn today when it came to her commands. She tried not to not listen or would try to lay down on the floor to get out of doing a command, but I made sure that she followed through.

Today Genie joined me on a little Christmas shopping spree at the mall. There was a good amount of people distractions for Genie to train around. Today she worked completely off leash! She did very well! Genie was focused and obedient. She had plenty of admirers that stopped to watch her train.

Today Genie had to take the day off training. We were getting ready to leave the house to go training. When Genie hopped into the car she misguided her jump and slipped hurting her front right leg. She has a limp but able to step on it. I checked her from shoulder to paw. I am able to bend her joints and rub all the muscles and she didn’t react. I let her rest for the day and hang out with her friends. I will keep an eye on her and see how she is feeling tomorrow.

Today Genie is looking much better. She still has a little limp, but is more comfortable moving around and putting weight on her leg. I want her to heal completely before we start going back out in public to train, so we stayed home and did some light training. We worked on door manners, teaching Genie to not pass thresholds until given permission. We also worked on food refusal, teaching Genie that  food on the ground doesn’t mean it belongs to her. She needs to ignore the food unless we give it to her.

Today Genie had to take another rest day. Her leg was bothering her more. She didn’t want to put much weight on it. I took her to the vet to get her examined. We got good results back. No fractures or broken bones, just pulled shoulder muscle. He gave Genie a weeks work of medication to take to help with the pain.
