Foxley, a seven year old Husky/Shepherd Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train Program. He comes to us not knowing commands, leash pulling on walks, being reactive to dogs, and running away. Over the two weeks Foxley will be working towards his off leash obedience and manners. Check I. To see his progress!

Foxley is getting settled in here at my home. I introduced him to my German Shepherd. He was a little tense when meeting her, but fine with her after the initial greet. I let him see and smell the rest of my pack through the fence. Foxley was reactive towards them. He did not like the male dog I have here. I am going to keep Foxley separated from everyone for now and focus on his obedience training. I am going to let him get adjusted to his new surroundings today and tomorrow we will begin his training. Above is a tutorial video of the Ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with the training collar. Also is a picture of Foxley’s Ecollar that he will be sent home with.

Today Foxley and I trained at home. We practiced his Sit command. It is was a bit of a struggle in the beginning, but he is slowly starting to understand what I am asking of him. I didn’t incorporate the Ecollar today. I want Foxley to understand his commands first before we start working with the Ecollar. He finally showed his energetic side today. Foxley loves running around and playing. He got to meet my two small dogs, through a fence. He wasn’t reactive, like he was towards the larger dogs, but seemed to show interest in them. I’m still going to keep Foxley separated from everyone right now.

Today Foxley and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of the Sit command. He did much better today, starting to understand the command. We also practiced his Heel. It is still a work in progress, but he caught on very quickly. I introduced him to the pinch collar. Foxley was not a big fan of it in the beginning, trying to throw himself around to get away from it. In the video above you see how Foxley quickly learns to follow the pressure rather than fight against it. Foxley did a great job on his second day of training!

Today Foxley and I went to the park to work on his obedience. He gave me a hard time with his heel command today, flopping around and biting on the leash. It took us a good 25 minutes before he stopped resisting and started following along. I introduced and conditioned Foxley to the Ecollar. We also worked on his down command. He caught on to this one pretty fast, probably because he was tired from his tantrum he threw in the beginning. Foxley is a smart boy and learns quickly, but is just stubborn. I’m not sure how long he was a stray for or if he had previous owners. He is just not used to being told to do anything and having to follow through. That’s okay. We will continue to practice and improve.

Today Foxley and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus. We practiced more of his Heel, Sit, and Down commands. We also practiced a new command Place. Place is a defined object that Foxley must sit or lay on. This command is great for working on duration and distance, building confidence, and teaching Foxley to be calm and relaxed. He did much better today, less tantrum throwing.

Today Foxley and I went down to the beach to work on his obedience around distractions.

He was a bit distracted with all the commotion going on around us. As we walked along the beach and trained, he was able to settle down and relax. We came across many dogs while we were there. Foxley was reactive towards a few dogs that started barking at him. I told him ‘off’, gave him a tap on the Ecollar, and he would stop right away and go back to focusing on his commands. If the dogs were calm he wouldn’t react. He is getting better with duration, being able to hold his sits and downs a little longer. We will continue to practice and work around more dog distractions so Foxley can be come desensitized when we come across more dogs.

Today Foxley and I went to the shopping outlets to work on his obedience around distractions. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He was a little stubborn with following his commands, but I made sure that he followed with what I asked of him. We came across a few dogs while we were there. He did a great job staying calm and ignoring the dogs as they passed by us.

Today Foxley and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We worked  on his duration. He is getting better at holding his commands longer, as well as responding quicker when I ask him to do a command. He still tries to test boundaries and see if he can get away with not listening, but I make sure he follows through with everything I ask of him. Foxley did try to run off a few times when he didn’t feel like listening, so I don’t trust him yet to start leash dragging or have him off leash. We will continue to practice and improve Foxley’s obedience.

Today Foxley and I went to a local shopping center to work on his obedience. Today he actually did very well. He listened to all of his commands and didn’t put up a struggle once. Foxley very well holding his sits and downs. There was a gentleman that admired Foxley’s training. The man complemented him saying Foxley Doing a great job and is so well mannered.

Today Foxley and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Foxley had plenty of dog distractions to work around. He did really well in the beginning, working around all the dogs in close proximity and staying focused on his commands. We had one incident where one of the dogs was running up to us while we were working on his recall. Foxley went after the other dog. The other dog is fine, no bite mark from Foxley. It is the excited/high energy that seems to trigger Foxley. I introduced him to the same dog right after the incident, when both were in a calm state, and Foxley was completely fine around the other dog. I introduced him to a few other dogs as well. I can see that he gets really tense and is unsure. We will continue to work on his socialization skills.

Today Foxley and I went to the park to work on his obedience. He did an amazing job! He was focused and followed all his commands without any issues. We came across many ducks and squirrels at the park. Foxley was very calm and did try to chase them. We also came across other dogs while we were training. There were some excitable dogs that barked at Foxley while they were walking by. Foxley was a good boy and just watched them as they passed.

Today Foxley and I went to the mall to work on in his obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs so Foxley could work around more dog distractions. He did a great job around the other dogs. He stayed calm and wasn’t reactive towards them. He did well with most of his commands. He tried being a little stubborn with Down, but I made sure that he followed through. Foxley received a few compliments from people, saying he was very well mannered and wished their dogs could behave as good as him. At home, Foxley is getting along with my personal dogs. He hasn’t shown interest in playing with them, but is fine socializing with them.

Today Foxley and I went to the outlets to work on his obedience around distractions. Once again, he did a great job following all his commands. Foxley was focused and obedient. He received a compliment from on of the employees inside the store. The woman asked if she could pet him. Foxley sat nicely and patiently as he received pet and attention.

Today Foxley and I trained at home. We practice all his commands and worked on his duration. We also practiced his food and door manners. Foxley spent the rest of the day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I am very proud of the progress he has made over the two weeks. He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
