Encino | German Shepherd | Cerritos, CA | In-Training

Encino, a 10 month old German Shepherd, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our 3 week board and train program. Encino is a very loving and energetic boy. He comes to us with some bad behaviors: leash pulling, digging, biting the carpet, chewing the walls, jumping, barking, and following commands only when he wants to. Over the next 3 weeks Encino will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Today Encino started his training. I introduced and conditioned him to the Ecollar. We worked on commands sit and place. Place is a command where Encino has to sit or lay on an object. This command is great for building his confidence as well as teaching him to just relax. Encino is still a bit nervous around the other dogs, but he is slowly starting to warm up to them. He still doesn't want to play, but is interacting with them.

Today Encino and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of sit and place. We worked on a new command today, Come. It was really windy at the park, so Encino was a little anxious. Other than being distracted by the wind, he did a good job on is 2nd day of training. He is still warming up to the other dogs and is becoming more interested in them.

Today we stayed home for training. Encino practiced come to sit and place. We worked on a new command, Down. He did very well with the down command, caught on very quick. Im very happy, today he finally came out of his shell and played with the other dogs. He even initiated play with all of them.

Today we stayed home again and worked on commands. Encino's obedience is coming along very well. He has caught on quick to all the commands. Now that Encino understands the commands, I am starting to have him work on his duration (holding the commands). He still wants to get up if I get too far or wait too long, but it's a work in progress and we will keep practicing.

This morning started off good, but unfortunately did not last long. Encino was having fun playing with all the other dogs when he had an accident and got an injury on his side. He running around one of the cars and cut his side open on the tow hitch cover. I took him to the vet to get stitched up. Encino ended up with 13 stitches. He was at the vet for most of the day. I brought him home around 4:30pm. He was back to his normal self, but a bit drowsy from the anesthesia so he just relaxed for the rest of the day. The vet gave Encino antibiotics that he will take twice daily. All Encino’s buddies new he wasn’t feeling well. they new to be gentle around him.

Encino is doing well and is back to his normal self. His stitches don't seem to be bothering him, but he is wearing a cone when I am not supervising him. Today we practiced he obedience commands. We started practicing for his Canine Good Citizen test. In order to get his certification, he must pass all 10 requirements.

Today Encino and i practiced commands, whenever the rain would stop. Tonight was the first night Encino joined the rest of the pack for meal time. During feeding time, the dogs must be calm and wait patiently. The calmest dogs get to eat first. Once they are finished with their meal, they must walk away or wait patiently. No one is allowed to go eat out of another dogs bowl. Eating with the pack is great for teaching patience, calmness, boundaries and respect for other pack members.

Today Encino and I practiced his off leash commands. Encino learned a new command, Under. His side is healing very well. He acts like he doesn't even have an injury, running around and playing with the other dogs. I have to stop him and calm him down sometimes because he wants to get a little too wild and rough play. I don't want him to open up his stitches.

Today Encino and I enjoyed the day out at the beach. We worked on all his off leash obedience around a lot of distractions. He was a bit nervous when we got there, but once we started walking around he began to relax and enjoy himself. He did a great job today! He ignored other dogs walking by; he had no problem walking by people on their bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, etc. Encino's side has healed up nicely and has an appointment on Saturday to remove his sutures.
