Doozie | Dutch Shepherd | Seal Beach, CA | In-Training

Doozie, a four year old Dutch Shepherd, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Board and Train program. Doozie a very smart girl that knows her commands but listens when she feels like it or if there is a ball in your hand. She is good around people and dogs, but can be protective of her family and house. She will growl or bark if she is unsure of someone. Over the three weeks Doozie will be working on her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress.

Pupdate 1/14/2024

Doozie and her sister are settling in here at my home. She got got to meet a few other friends, through their kennels. Doozie was indifferent with them, but more interested in seeing her new surroundings. She did become a little reactive, with the other dogs, when she was inside her kennel. She barked a few times, but when I told her to stop, she listened.

Today Doozie and I went to the park to work on her commands. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. Place is a command where Doozie must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for building confidence, as well as teaching her to be calm and relaxed. She did very well with her commands, especially if she knew I had her ball. We need some more work with her duration. She can hold a command, but won’t stay down for long. Doozie had a great first day of training!

Pupdate 1/16/2024

Today Doozie and I went to the park again to work on her commands. We practiced more of Sit, down, and Place. We started working on her Heel command. It is still a work in progress, but is definitely a big improvement. She is very strong and can drag you around, but after learning heel Doozie is staying close to my side and focusing on where I am walking. We came across a few of the park workers. Doozie started to growl at one as the gentleman was walking towards us. I told her ‘off’, gave her a little tap on the ecollar, and she stopped. The next person we passed by she looked at, but didn’t react or tense up.

Today Doozie and I went to Lowe’s to work on her commands around distractions. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. She did very well. Doozie was focused and obedient. She was a little cautious of people that would pass by us. I would see her perk up and focus on them. I would tell her ‘off’ along with a tap on the ecollar to stop her from looking and to focus back on me. We had no reactivity today. It is easier to stop her before, when she becomes alert, versus trying to stop her when she is already barking.

Today Doozie and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. I used her buddies as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. Doozie was a little distracted a first, but as we continued to work on her commands she was able to ignore the other dogs and focus back on me. I didn’t use her favorite ball while we trained. She get a little to amped up whenever she sees it, which makes it hard for her to stay still. I want her to be calm and relaxed when we do our training reps. Once our session was over, she got her favorite reward playing fetch with her ball.

Today Doozie and I waited for a little break in the rain and went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. She did pretty well. We were able to work semi off leash. I let her drag the leash around while we trained. Doozie is doing well with holding her commands. A few people passed by us while we were training. Some people complimented and talked to her as they walked by. Doozie stayed in her command and just watched them as they passed.

Pupdate 1/21/2024

Today Doozie and I went to the mall to work on her obedience around distractions. The mall was pretty busy, so we had a lot of people distractions to work around. Doozie was a bit overwhelmed with all the commotion, so we didn’t do any semi-off leash training. As we continued to practice and walk around the mall she was able to relax and focus. She did very well heeling through the crowds of people with me and staying in her sits and downs as people walked closely by her.

Pupdate 1/22/2024

Today Doozie and I went to the mall to work on her obedience around distractions. The mall was not as hectic as yesterday, due to the rain, but there were still a good amount of distractions to train around. Doozie was more comfortable with mild distractions. She was able to be more relaxed and focused. She was even able to work semi-off leash. Doozie did pretty well. We need to tighten up a few of her commands and then she will be able to start working completely off leash.

Today Doozie and Harbour went to the park to work on their obedience commands together. They did okay for their first time working side by side. They were a little confused and had to figure out how to maneuver around next to each other, but they started to get the hang of it. They will continue to practice and tighten up their commands.

Pupdate 1/24/2024

Today Doozie and Harbour went to the mall to work on their off leash obedience together around distractions. They did pretty well working together. They were both focused and obedient. Doozie is quicker to respond while her sister can be a little lazy and stubborn when she doesn’t want to train anymore. They are both getting the hang of working side by side. Right now they are linked together with a coupler leash so they can stay close by each other. We will continue to practice so they can tighten up their commands and be able to work without the coupler leash.
