Chico, a one year old Pit Bull Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train Program. Chico comes to us knowing a few commands, being easily distracted out in public, not walking properly on leash, and being shy around new people. Over the two weeks Chico will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Chico is settling in well at my home. He got to meet the rest of my pack. He has been having a great time playing and socializing since he has been here. Chico was a bit hesitant meeting a few of my relatives.

Today Chico and I went to the park to work on his obedience. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands: Sit, Place, Down, and Heel. Not sure if he already knows Place or just really liked the dog cot, but Chico picked up on the command quickly. Place is a command where Chico must sit or lay on a defined object. This is great for building confidence as well as teaching him to be calm and relaxed. He is doing very well with the heel command. When Chico first got to the park he tried pulling me around, but as we worked on his heel command he stayed right at my side. He did a great job on his first day of training!

Today Chico and I trained at home. We worked on all his obedience commands. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play while we trained. He did pretty well. He was distracted by his friends at first, but as we continued to do his commands, he was able to ignore them and focus back on me. Once training was over I let him join in on the fun.

Today Chico and I went to Lowe’s to stay cool out of the heat and work on his obedience around distractions. He did pretty well. He was focused and obedient. One of the employees approached us and asked if she could pet Chico. He sat nicely and allowed her to pet him.

Today Chico and I went to the beach to work on his obedience around distractions. It was pretty busy today, or were many distractions going on around us. Chico was a little nervous with all the commotion, but was able to focus and follow his commands very well around all the dog distractions, the only incident we had was when Chico became reactive towards a girl on her rollerblades. You can see in the video that he lunges towards her as she passes by, then once I corrected him Chico stopped and went back into his command. I think he might’ve gotten startled since they came up from behind, because he was fine with all the other skateboarders, bikers, and rollerbladers that we passed by.

Today Chico and I went to the park to work on his commands. We started worked semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we trained. He did pretty well. We need to tighten up a few of his commands first, then he will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Chico and his buddy, Ravioli, went to The Grove to work on their off leash obedience around distractions. He had to keep his leash while we were there, so had him drag it around while we trained. Chico had a few admirers that stopped to watch him train. He received a few compliments on how well mannered he is.

Today Chico and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands. I used his buddies as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. Chico worked on his food manners, teaching him to sit calmly and wait until given permission to approach his bowl and eat. He also worked on his door manners, teaching him to not pass thresholds until given permission.

Today Chico took the day off from training and spent his last day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I gave him a bath so he could be nice and clean when he sees you, but it didn’t last long. He rolled around and wrestled with his friends, getting all dirty again. Chico has done a great job with his training. He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
