Charlie the Great Dane has officially joined the OffLeash SoCal family, and he’s already making a big impression—literally and figuratively. With his towering size and gentle personality, Charlie is beginning his journey in basic obedience training, where he’ll learn essential commands like sit, down, place, a reliable recall, and leash manners. His training focuses on building clear communication, confidence, and reliability, helping him become a well-mannered companion both at home and out in public. As he settles into the program, Charlie is showing that even the biggest dogs can have the softest hearts and the willingness to learn.

On Charlie the Great Dane’s first trip to the park, it quickly became clear that he was stepping into a world that felt entirely new to him. He lumbered along with curiosity in every step, nose glued to the ground as he investigated every patch of grass like it held some grand secret. When I called his name—“Charlie!”—his head snapped up instantly, tail wagging with recognition. Beyond that, though, the basics were a mystery. Commands like “sit” and “stay” earned me blank, gentle stares, as if he was politely considering the idea but had no clue what it meant. Still, what he lacked in training, he made up for in affection—leaning his massive frame into me, soaking up attention, and offering clumsy but sincere attempts at connection in between his endless sniffing adventures.

Charlie was rewarded for his patience and consistency, helping Charlie understand that stillness could be just as important as movement. As we transitioned to leash work, Charlie began learning the basics of “heeling,” staying close and attentive rather than pulling ahead, his powerful frame moving with surprising grace. With each step, he showed that even a large, strong dog can develop excellent manners, guided by steady training and a gentle temperament.

Charlie the Great Dane had always been full of energy, but training sessions began to bring out a calmer, more focused side of him. At first, sitting on command—especially around other dogs—was a challenge, as every movement and bark distracted him. With consistent guidance and patient repetition, Charlie started to understand what was expected. I worked on reinforcing the “sit” command while other dogs were nearby, rewarding him each time he chose to focus instead of react. Gradually, Charlie began to settle more quickly, his attention shifting from the chaos around him to the back to me and my instructions. Over time, he learned that sitting calmly brought praise and rewards, and his ability to listen improved with each session. Charlie’s progress showed not just obedience, but a growing confidence and self-control, as he learned to stay composed and attentive even in stimulating environments.

Charlie has been working hard on learning how to use his place mat in different environments, building both confidence and patience along the way. Whether he was practicing at home, outside in the yard, or around new distractions, Charlie stayed focused as he learned to calmly settle on his mat and wait patiently for direction. Charlie the Great Dane has been learning excellent food manners both inside and outside his crate by practicing patience and self-control at mealtime. Before being allowed to eat, Charlie must calmly wait for instruction, either sitting politely or lying down without rushing toward his food. Even with excitement building, he has been improving his ability to stay focused and composed until given permission to begin. This training has helped Charlie understand boundaries, build discipline, and create a calmer routine around feeding time, showing just how smart and willing he is to learn proper manners.

Charlie the Great Dane worked on advanced place cot training with impressive focus and impulse control. During the session, Charlie maintained a solid down-stay on his cot through multiple real-world distractions and stimuli, including the refrigerator opening and closing, doors opening, knocking sounds, and even the doorbell ringing. Despite the increasing level of excitement and environmental pressure, Charlie remained calm, composed, and committed to his place command. This type of training helps build reliability, patience, and confidence, teaching Charlie to stay relaxed and obedient even when activity is happening around him.

Charlie the Great Dane did exceptionally well in training today and has shown steady progress all week. He is really beginning to understand his place and responsibilities, showing more confidence, focus, and patience during each session. One of his biggest accomplishments has been perfecting his heel position exactly where his owner requested — calmly and consistently at the handler’s right side. Charlie is becoming much more attentive to direction and is responding beautifully to guidance, making smoother turns, maintaining position longer, and showing excellent engagement throughout training. His improvement this week has been impressive, and he continues to develop into a well-mannered, reliable companion.

Charlie the Great Dane towered over Charlie the golden retriever puppy, but the size difference didn’t stop their excitement when they first met at obedience class. Both dogs wagged their tails eagerly, pulling slightly on their leashes and sneaking playful glances at each other, clearly hoping to run and socialize right away. However, their trainers insisted that playtime could only happen after each dog successfully completed their individual obedience patterns. The Great Dane calmly demonstrated precise heel work, steady sits, and confident recalls, while the puppy worked hard to stay focused through his own commands despite his bubbling energy. Once both Charlies finished their routines successfully, they were finally rewarded with the chance to greet each other properly, instantly bouncing into a joyful play session filled with happy barks, wagging tails, and newfound friendship.

Charlie, the great Dane is doing so well and his training and show such a responsiveness and his recall and his heeling, we have begun to expand to breaking off leash in the front yard. I know this was a request of Charlie’s owner because of the layout of their yard. Charlie continues to grow every day physically and mentally in obedience.

Charlie the Great Dane worked on learning that a dropped leash means he must remain in the position he was instructed to hold, whether sitting or lying down, even when I move out of sight. The exercise focused on building his understanding of duration and impulse control while reinforcing calm behavior without constant leash guidance. Charlie responded very well to the training and showed a strong grasp of the expectation, only needing one reset throughout the session. His ability to stay composed and maintain position demonstrated excellent progress and growing reliability with his stay command.

Charlie the Doberman has been making huge strides with his off-leash and dropped-leash training during our real-world walks. One of the biggest goals of his training is building reliability and calm obedience in everyday situations, and Charlie is proving he’s up for the challenge. During one of our walks, Charlie was able to hold a solid down command while I completely dropped the leash and used both hands to clean up after him—showing impressive patience, impulse control, and trust. Moments like these are what real-world training is all about: teaching dogs to remain calm, focused, and obedient even when their handler’s attention is briefly elsewhere. Charlie continues to grow more confident and reliable with every outing.

Charlie the Great Dane had an excellent training day at the public mall on a busy Saturday afternoon. Despite the large crowds, loud noises, and constant distractions, he remained calm, focused, and attentive to his handler the entire time. Charlie confidently walked through crowded walkways, passed by shoppers and other dogs politely, and held all of his commands beautifully. He maintained his sits, downs, stays, and heel work with impressive consistency, showing great patience and discipline in such a stimulating environment. His ability to stay composed and obedient in a high-distraction setting demonstrated how much progress he has made in his training, and he made everyone around him proud with his outstanding behavior.
