Buddy, a German Shepherd from Oxnard, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Two Week Board & Train dog training program. Buddy was trained by dog trainer Chris Louie in Norwalk, CA.

I’d like to welcome Buddy the 1 1/2 year old German Shepard to OffLeash SoCal for our two week board and train program. Buddy boy is the family dog you have always dreamed of, he loves to play fetch for hours, he cuddles with mom and dad, and he loves to be around people. However Buddy is highly protective of his pack and will aggressively bark at other dogs as they pass by, he knows some commands but has a hard time holding them, and he is very hard to walk on a leash. Within these two short weeks Buddy will learn 7 basic commands of Come, Sit, Down, Place, Heel, Off, and Break. I’m excited to work with this fun loving pup and help turn him into the dog his family always dreamed of.

Today when teaching Buddy his first command of Place we had an accident. I’m ok and so is Buddy boy. I personally don't think he is as aggressive, I believe the stress of being in a training environment where he is held accountable to a command, had gotten the best of him. After this incident happened I calmly put Buddy in the kennel, and rushed to urgent care to get my wounds properly cleaned. When I got home I let Buddy out of the kennel to weight him, let him go potty, and feed him before we turned in for the night. I am going to use this as a positive learning tool, build on this and continue training at a safe pace.

Today, Buddy and I had a huge breakthrough in his training. The past few days, I had to put a muzzle on him for my safety after our accident. Today, I got Buddy to sit on my left side, get on the place cot, and fed him some treats from my hand. I know we still have along way to go with his training, but I’m proud of Buddy for working through his troubles to produce results.

Today, we worked hard to beat the heat. Buddy and I woke up and did our first training exercises of come and sit before the sun came up. During the hottest part of the day, Buddy stayed cool in the air conditioned kennel. When the ground finally cooled off we went for our evening walk around the neighborhood.

Buddy was working on the down command today and he is a natural. Since Down is so easy for Buddy, I thought I’d teach him puppy burpees.
