Meet Belle, the Labradoodle from Rancho Cucamonga, CA who is here for a Two-Week Board and Train Program. Belle is here because she struggles a bit with manners in the house, running outside when the front door opens, over-excitedly jumping on people to say hello, separation anxiety, and lacks of confidence in herself. Over the next two weeks, we will be working on doorway manners, greeting manners, basic obedience and confidence building. Stay tuned for Belle's progress!

Belle and I are taking time to get to know each other. She is certainly a little overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle of the city but calms down once she's inside the apartment. She already knows which door to go to and is acclimating with her crate very well. She is a bit frantic when strangers and loud cars pass by so we will be working on "heel" tomorrow. We already have begun on working on doorway manners to prevent her bolting in or out of the doorway.

Daily training notes: Belle is acclimating to her new environment.

Today Belle and I began working on “heel, sit and come to sit”. Belle is still a bit overstimulated by the traffic in the city and is quite skittish when walking by pedestrians and other dogs. We were walking by an individual taking shopping bags out of her trunk and Belle attempted to find a safe place by running behind me. She does pull quite a bit on the leash and attempts to zig zag in front when given a little slack on the line. We will continue working on helping her feel more comfortable outdoors and making it a positive experience for her. Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Worked on heel, sit and come to sit.

Today Belle and I began working on “heel, sit, place and come to sit” at Home Depot. She did better at Home Depot than she normally does on her walks! She was so good at jumping onto the different objects at the store like the short ladders and wood beams. She sat by my heel while I was getting a key copy and didn’t even dart when the machine began cutting. The exposure she has been getting in just the last 2 days have helped her immensely. She still does get jumpy and skittish with strangers but in the quieter areas of the store, she was able to focus on her exercises. Belle has been doing better with her doorway manners and waiting until I walk in with her. Tomorrow we will be meeting up with other Offleash SoCal trainers at the park so stay tuned for that!

Today Belle and I made a trip out to the park to meet with a couple of other Offleash SoCal trainers and we worked on “heel, sit, come to sit and down”. Belle is still learning to adapt to different environments and needs time to familiarize herself with her surroundings before being able to focus on the exercises. She is getting a little better about walking around strangers but she still attempts to pull away while walking at heel. Her “sits” are coming together and after doing a lap around the park, she settled in better for our “heel”. She struggles with duration because of how overwhelmed and distracted she gets but we will continue to work on that. Stay tuned for more!

Today Belle and I took a very long walk by the busy streets of LA to practice her “heel” and neutrality to the hustle and bustle of the city. She seems to be more nervous about walking by busy streets than walking at the park or Home Depot so we’ll be focusing on practicing our exercises in more chaotic environments. She still requires quite a bit of leash encouragement for our exercises as she does tend to get distracted by everything around her. I put the e-collar on her today to get her familiar with having it on and will be switching over to more e-collar use in hopes that she does not get too reliant on the leash for her exercises. We have also been really emphasizing the importance of doorway manners and “place” as these were major concerns for her pawrents. Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Practiced heel, doorway manners, place and down.

Today Belle and I went to visit a friend to work on greeting manners and our exercises with less leash guidance. She initially jumped up to greet but we were then able to practice “off”. By the end of our practice, she was able to sit at heel whilst being pet by the stranger. We then worked on moving to more e-collar work for our exercises and fading out leash pressure. Her “come to sits, downs, sits and place” are coming along nicely but we will need to continue working on duration as she prefers to be by my side. It was very nice to practice our exercises in such a new and quiet environment so that she could really focus and not worry about other distractions in the area. Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Worked on greeting manners, sit, down, heel, come to sit and extended down.

Today Belle and I went to the playground to work on sits, downs, heel, come to sit and place. She was able to work around children playing at park and other dogs walking around her! She still needs to work on her duration because she prefers being close to me and will try to break her stays. She is responding better to the e-collar and doing well with my other board and train, Lord Pierre. Her door manners are really coming together and we will be redirecting more of our focus to our durations and heel work. Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Worked on adding more duration to all of our exercises.

Today Belle and I worked on car load up manners after our morning training sessions. She was a bit afraid of the pet ramp at first so I laid it flat to teach her to walk across it and to familiarize herself with the rough texture of the pet ramp. I did have to use a little bit of leash guidance to encourage her to follow through with the movements. After she became familiar with the ramp, I propped it up to lead up to the crate. She certainly hesitated at first and I attempted to use just a little bit of leash pressure to encourage her but remembered that Belle responds better to low e-collar encouragement over leash guidance. Once I gave her the small encouragement with the e-collar, she went up the ramp as if it never fazed her! Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Worked on car load up manners with the rest of our exercises.

Today Belle and I went to the park for our morning session and worked on heel, place, sit and down with a lot of other dogs around. Belle still grumbles quite a bit when she sees other dogs but she is doing better about walking past them without running away or walking towards them. Her heel is coming together better and I switched to walking her on her normal collar so that I only use the e-collar to guide her back to heel. We still need to work on duration because she continues to break off from her extended sits or downs when I walk away or if she gets nervous about a passing stranger. Stay tuned for more!

Daily Training Notes: Worked on heel with flat collar and adding duration to her exercises with distractions and triggers.

Today Belle and I went to Citadel to practice our exercises in a more public setting. She has improved since our first day together and is able to do all of her commands. However, when she fixates on a stranger, dog or object, she will pretend not to hear me. Even with e-collar encouragement, she will fixate and decide to either run away or bark at the trigger. I will continue to work on her engagement with me and her commitment to the exercise. She held her downs and sits longer than before but still attempted to get off when I first walked away. It's so important for Belle to continue getting the exposure so that she understands it isn't all so bad and how fun it can be outside! Stay tuned for more!

Today Belle and I went to the park to meet with other Offleash SoCal trainers and their pups! Belle got to work with another Offleash SoCal trainer on all of her commands. She did quite well and we learned that she prefers to "down" on the floor over downing on a table or an elevated spot. This will help us immensely as we continue to work on adding duration to her exercises! It was amazing to see her working with a different trainer because she was able to see that she didn't need to be right by my side to be praised and loved on. We need to continue working on her not getting distracted during "extended sit" and "extended down" practices but it's in her nature to be wary of most things around her. We will be going to Home Depot tonight to continue working on environmentals and helping her feel more confident in a distracting environment.
Stay tuned for more!

Today Belle and I went to the Citadel outlets to prepare for our big turnover day! She certainly did better this time around than our first Citadel visit. Our Home Depot run last night must have helped her immensely because her extended sits were really good today and it makes me so happy to see her feeling secure in herself to be able to hold a sit away from my side. She did get up from her extended down exercises a couple of times because of the loud noises the panels were making under the wind. We will continue to work on her durations in distracting environments! Belle has been having a bit of a hard time loading up into the crate in the car, but understandably so, as my car is slightly higher than the norm. Stay tuned for more!

Today Belle and I went to the park in the morning for our session and worked on all of our commands (sit, down, come to sit, place and heel) and worked a lot on our extended downs. I brought an elevated bed with me today and she seemed to enjoy working on her downs on the that way more than practicing her downs on a table or the ground. There were a lot of dogs running around the park and although Belle did grumble about it, she did very well to continue working on her exercises. She is doing so well with walking at heel now and not forging ahead and is very good about coming to me for recall. After the park, we went to visit my friend and got to practice place and greeting manners! It’s getting ever so close to her turnover day and she is probably so excited to see his pawrents and show off all of the things she has learned. Stay tuned for more!

Today Belle and I went to Citadel to touch up on all of our commands for the last time! It was extremely crowded at the outlets and Belle was quite the trooper. She was a overwhelmed but so was I, so I don’t blame her. We managed to find quieter areas to practice our extended sits and downs and she is showing improvement in her durations. After the outlets, we came home and touched up on our doorway manners and she did amazing!!!!! She must have thought that waiting by the doorway was easy after holding a long sit at the mall. She goes home tomorrow and we’re super excited to show her parents! Stay tuned for more!
