Beagle & Pomeranian Shepherd Mix Training | Molly and Kai | Pasadena, CA

Molly the Beagle, and Kai the Pomeranian Shepherd Mix from Pasadena, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Board and Train Program. Molly was trained by Adrienne, and Kai was trained by Amanda in La Habra Heights, CA.

Pupdates:

Kai, a Pomeranian Shepherd Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train Program. Kai comes to with fear aggression. He will charge and bark at people he is unfamiliar with. He is very attached to his family and his sister, Molly the Beagle. When they are around Kai becomes very reactive. It is hard to take him on a walk because he is very nervous out in public and will lung and bark at other dogs and people. Over the two weeks Kai will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Kai is getting settled in at my home. He is a bit nervous and cautious around me. He will stay close to my side but doesn't want my to pet him just yet. I introduced him to some of my pack, with out his sister around. He didn't show any aggression or reactivity, but actually timid. Once we brought his sister out is when he when he tried to bite one of the other dogs. Kai is just an insecure dog that needs some direction. He knows that being reactive and barking gets things, that scare him, to move away. It may take him a little time to get adjusted to his new surroundings and become comfortable with me, but that's okay.

Today Kai and I went to the park to work on his obedience commands. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Place, and Down. Not sure if he already knew the Place command, but he caught on very quickly. Down we had a little struggle with. He does seem to know the command, but is reluctant to go into the down position because he is anxious. We will continue to practice and build Kai’s confidence. He did a great job on his first day.

Today Kai and I stayed at home to train. We practiced more of Sit and Place. We started working on the Heel command. It seems like he already knows the command. It’s not a perfect heel, but he stayed close to my side and didn’t try to pull me around. We also worked  more on his Down command. He did much better today, more willing to go into the down position. Kai is getting more comfortable with me and accepting my pets and affection. Above is a tutorial video of the ecollar. I didn't get to send one home with you, but please watch as many times as you need to become familiar with the training collar.

Today Kai and I went to the park to work on his commands. I had my sister work with Kai while I worked another dog around him. Kai did pretty well. He was a little anxious but still able to focus and follow his commands. He wasn’t reactive towards any of the dogs, except when one tried to sniff him. Kai snapped at the dog. He acts much better when his sister is not around. When they are together Kai is very attached to her, which makes it hard for him to focus and follow his commands.

Today Kai and I went to Lowe’s to work on his obedience around distractions. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. He actually did very well. Kai was focused and obedient. We practiced a new command, Come to Sit. For this command Kai will come around my right side and sit in the heel position. He did a great job and caught on to his new command quickly.

Today Kai and I went to the citadel outlets to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little nervous with his surroundings, but still able to focus on his commands. We were able to work semi-off leash! I let Kai drag the leash around while we trained. He did pretty well. We need to tighten up a few of his commands, then Kai will be ready to start working completely off leash!

Today Kai and I went to the park to work on his obedience. Since he has been doing so well with his training, I decided to have him work alongside his sister to see how he would do. Both Molly and Kai did very well together. They were focused and obeyed all their commands. They didn’t show any reactivity towards people that saw or came across. Kai is still anxious out in public, but is definitely building his confidence. He is making better choices of looking to me for guidance rather than trying to take charge and be reactive.

Today Kai and Molly went to an outdoor mall to work on their obedience together. They were a little too distracted with their surroundings, so we weren’t able to do any semi-off leash work. They did pretty well together. They heeled nicely and were able to follow commands. They ignored people that were passing by. They were a reactive a few times towards people that wanted to approach and pet them. It seems that Kai, being the insecure dog, starts then Molly follows along after. We will continue to work around more people distractions to get them desensitized and comfortable when people approach.

Pupdate 3/23/2024

Today Kai and Molly stayed home to train to stay out of the rain. They practiced all their commands and worked on their distance and duration. We practiced door manners, teaching Kai and Molly to not pass thresholds until given permission. We also practiced food manners, teaching to wait patiently for their food until given permission to eat. Just because the food is on the floor does not mean it belongs to them.

Today Kai and I took a drive down to Venice Beach to work on his obedience around distractions. It was pretty busy and very windy, which made Kai a little bit nervous and not able to work semi-off leash. He did very well following his commands, as long as I was next to him. If I tried to distance myself, Kai would break to come closer to me, so I just stayed close. He did well with the people distractions and most of the dog distractions. He reacted two times at dogs that  were barking or trying to pull towards him. I would give Kai a little tap on the ecollar and tell him ‘off’ and he would stop reacting and focus back on his commands.

Today Kai and I went to a local shopping center to work on his obedience. He did much better today around mild distractions. He was more relaxed and able to focus. We were able to do semi-off leash training. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration.

Today Kai and Molly went to the mall to work on their obedience around distractions. The mall was pretty crowded, so they had a good amount to of distractions to work around. They did pretty well. They both were focused and obedient. We passed by other dogs with out any issues. We had a few people that approached us and complimented both Kai and Molly on how well mannered they were. Both dogs didn’t try to bark or lunge; they sat patiently as the people talked to us.

Today Kai and Molly went to the beach to work on their commands together. The did very well around all the people and dog distractions. There were quite a few dogs that were lunging and barking; Kai and Molly stayed calm and ignored the dogs as they passed by. They were both able to work together without me having to hold their leashes. They did a great job! Both dogs received many compliments on how great of a job they were doing.

Today Kai and Molly went to the beach to work on their commands together. Once again they both did a great job. They were both focused, obedient and able to train off leash together. We came across many dogs, some that were calm and relaxed and others that were reactive. Kai and Molly saw the dogs and the right choices to ignore them and stay focused on their training.

Today Kai took the day off from training and spent the day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I am very proud of Kai and the progress he has made over the two weeks. He can’t wait to go home tomorrow to show you everything he has learned!
