Baloo | German Shepherd | Los Angeles, CA | In-Training

Baloo, a one year old German Shepherd, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program.  Baloo comes to us with previous training, but doesn’t always listen when distracted. He jumps to greet, reactive towards other dogs, has some separation anxiety, and chews on things he’s not supposed to. Over the two weeks Baloo will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Baloo is settling in at my home. He got to meet a few of my dogs. He did fine with socializing. He wasn’t too interested in playing yet, but  surely he will start to once he warms to everyone and get comfortable with his new surroundings.

Today Baloo and I went to the park to work on his commands. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, Place, and Heel. He did very good following his commands. Heel is still a work in progress. Baloo tries to walk ahead a lot. After some repetition he started to slow down and focus on me and where I was walking. We saw other dogs at the park. Baloo noticed them but wasn’t reactive. He just watched as they passed by. I noticed he tries to eat his poop. When I see him going towards his poop I give him a little tap on the ecollar to stop him. I will keep an eye on this and hopefully get him to stop wanting to eat it. Above is a tutorial video for the ecollar. I didn't send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with it.

Today Baloo and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and started working on his duration and distance. He still tries to walk ahead in the heel command, but we will continue to practice. Baloo was reactive towards the other dogs while he was in his crate. When the other dogs pass by his crate he would bark and growl at them. I decide to keep baloo separate from the pack today.

Today Baloo and I went to Lowe’s to start working on his obedience around distractions. He was a little overwhelmed and distracted at first, but as we walked around and trained, he was able to settle down and focus back on his commands. He is improving with his duration, holding his commands, even as people passed by him. At home I brought him out with a few of my pack. He did OK socializing I noticed a Baloo is more comfortable with the dogs that don’t pay too much attention to him. He gets a little uncomfortable with the other dogs that are a little more pushy and try enter his space.

Today, Baloo and I went to the park to work on his obedience we practiced all his commands, and worked on his distance and duration. He did a very good job being focused and obedient. Baloo was very playful towards my German Shepherd today. She has a very low temperament. It was easier for him to approach her and once he was comfortable, he began to initiate play.

Today Chloe and I went to the mall to work on her obedience around distractions. It was pretty busy so Chloe had plenty of distractions to work around. She was a little distracted in the beginning, but as we walked around and trained, she was able to settle down and focus on her commands. She did very well passing by other dogs. Chloe received a few compliments on how well mannered she is.

Today, Baloo and I went to the mall to work on his obedience around distractions. It was pretty busy, so Baloo had plenty of distractions to work around. He was definitely distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around, he was able to settle down and focus on his commands. He did very well when passing by other dogs. When he would notice them and become fixated, I would tell Baloo off and give him a tap on the Ecollar to stop him from focusing and continue on with his heel. There was even another dog that was reactive towards him. Baloo looked at the dog for a second and then went back to falling his commands.

Today, Baloo and I went to the park to work on his commands. We met with another OffLeash SoCal trainer and his dog, so Baloo had a dog distraction to work around. He was a bit amped up and wild when I first took him out to train, but after some repetition he was able to settle down. We were able to work semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we trained. We need to tighten a few of his commands and work on his focus before Baloo is able to be completely off leash.

There were a few dogs that barked at him, but Baloo ignored them and continued on with his training. He had quite a few admirers that stopped to watch him train.

Today, Baloo and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We did some more semi-off leash work. He did pretty well. Baloo does great with holding his commands while I move around and distance myself from him. He heels nicely beside me. We just need to clean up his come to sit command and he will be ready to work completely off leash.

Today Baloo and I went to The Hollywood Walk of Fame to work on his obedience around distractions. He was a little distracted by all the commotion, when we first arrived, but after walking around and training he was able to settle down. I am very proud of how well he did today around all the distractions. Baloo was able to work completely off leash! He was a little sloppy with his Come to Sit, but we will keep practicing.

Today Baloo and I went to the mall to work on his obedience around distractions. We tried to work off leash, but he was a little too distracted with his surroundings. It was hard for him to focus or stay still. We had someone approach us and ask if he could pet Baloo. Baloo sat nicely and patiently while he got pet. We will continue to practice his on his focus and off leash obedience.

Today Baloo and I went to the park to work on his off leash obedience. He did very well. He was focused and obedient. At home we worked on his food manners, teaching him to wait patiently until given permission to eat his food. We also worked on door manners, teaching Baloo to pass thresholds until given permission.
