Coconut | Standard Poodle | Santa Monica, CA | In-Training

Coconut, a four month old Standard Poodle, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Puppy Board and Train program. Coconut comes to us with typical puppy behavior: little knowledge of commands, being easily distracted, jumping to greet, excessive barking, and not being potty trained. Over the three weeks Coconut will be working on her on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Coconut is settling in well at my home. She got to meet a few members of my pack. She was very shy at first,  but eventually she warmed up to everyone. Coconut started to initiate play. She ran around the yard, wanting the other dogs to chase her.

Today Coconut and I went to the park to work on her commands.  We practiced commands Sit, Place, and Down. She did very well with Place. I think this might be her favorite command. Down is still a work in progress. Coconut only wants to do it if I have a treat in my hand, but she is starting to get the hang of it. We need more work on her distance and duration, but with more practice she will get better. Coconut did a great job on her first day of training!

Today Coconut and I went to a local shopping center to work on her commands. We worked more on her Sit, Place, and down commands. She did very well. Coconut was very focused and obedient. She did much better with the down command. She received a few compliments from people on how cute and well mannered she is.

Today Coconut and I went to a local shopping center to work on her commands around distractions. Today we worked on her heel command. Heel is a structured walk where Coconut must walk at my side. It is still a work in progress, but she was walking much better, staying close to my side and focusing on me and where I am going. We practiced the rest of her commands and worked on her duration. Coconut is becoming more comfortable and confident when socializing with other dogs. She made a new friend today, Snoop the Doberman Pinscher. She’s finally has a friend that is just energetic and playful as her.

Today Coconut and I went to an outdoor shopping mall to work on her obedience around distractions. She was a little distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained Coconut was able to settle down and focus. Down was our biggest struggle today. She kept trying to resist going in to the down, but I made sure that she followed through. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs so Coconut could work around more dog distractions. Even though she wanted to go up to say hi, she stayed focused and followed her commands.

Today Coconut and I went to an outdoor shopping mall to work on her obedience around distractions. There was a children’s event going on, so there were lots of distractions to work around. Coconut did very well around all the children distractions. She was focused and obedient. She is getting a little better with her duration, but can use some more practice.

Today Coconut and I went to the park to work on her commands. She did very well. For the most part she was focused and obedient. The only struggle we had today was with the down command. Coconut knows the command, but was being stubborn and not wanting lay down. I made sure she followed through with all her commands.

Today Coconut and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. She gets really excited when it’s meal time and is impatient when I put the food down. She will try to run up to the bowl before I even put it down. So, we worked on her food manners, making Coconut wait patiently and calmly until I give her permission to eat.

Today Coconut and I spent the day down at the beach. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. There were a lot of people at the beach, so Coconut had many distractions to work around. She did very well around the bikes and skateboards. She was a little distracted by all the dogs she saw, but was still able to follow her commands. Her favorite part of the day was getting to play in the sand.

Today Coconut and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. We also worked on her door manners. Coconut must wait at thresholds until given permission. Just because the door opens does not mean she is allowed to run out.
