Meet Mochi, the 2 year old Golden Retriever from La Habra, CA who is here for a Two Week Board and Train Program. Mochi is here with us because she is quite the rambunctious pup who gets overly excited and jumps on people she likes, zooms around in the house and has injured a family member, and has little to no basic obedience. Over the next two weeks, we will work on general obedience, greeting manners and proper leash manners! Stay tuned for our progress!

Today Mochi and I met for the first time and she was slightly wary about me and the new surroundings. We took time at the park to get to know each other and once she settled in, she allowed me to pet her. She also let me pick her up to go into the crate in the car. It is quite clear that she does not really enjoy car rides nor does she enjoy going in the crate because she urinated while going into the crate and then urinated in the crate on the ride home. As soon as we got home, she got a bath and was given some time to settle in. We took a walk around the neighborhood to get her used to some of the city noise and she was a bit nervous about the hustle and bustle of the city. Hopefully, she settles in well in the next few days! Stay tuned for more!

Today Mochi and I went to the park to meet with other Offleash SoCal trainers and their pups. The start of our morning was a bit rocky. The noise of the construction happening in the building next to my home was intimidating to Mochi and she was not very confident on our morning walk. Mochi improved on loading up into the car on her own! However, she still urinated in the crate on the way to the park and needed another bath when we got home. On our way to the meeting location at the park, Mochi displayed quite a bit of resistance to leash guidance and was insistent on going in whichever direction she thought was best. When I tried to guide her with the leash, she attempted to jump up and bite the leash multiple times and when that didn't work, she laid down and refused to move. In some instances, she rolled around in protest against the use of the leash. After quite some time, she was able to relax enough to work on our exercises. We worked on "sit, down, come to sit, heel and place". Stay tuned for more!

Today Mochi and I had our first small win today! Mochi was much more comfortable on her morning walk today (perhaps because it was so quiet due to the rain) and she pottied during her walk! It is quite common for a dog who is nervous about its surroundings to have a hard time pottying. When Mochi pottied outside, I made sure to give her lots of praise and treats as a reward! After our walk, we went to Home Depot to work through our exercises in a loud, crowded environment. Mochi was definitely a little overwhelmed by the carts and machinery being used at the store but still did a great job with her exercises. Because she was afraid of all the carts passing by her, we worked on desensitizing her to the cart for some time. We will continue going to different environments to help Mochi feel more confident in herself and her own abilities. Stay tuned for more!

Today Mochi and I decided to practice our exercises more in depth in a quieter location. Until now, we had practiced around people and distractions and I wanted to take advantage of a dry day to get Mochi to working outside with less distractions to practice with little to no leash pressure. She did much better today and is requiring less guidance to do her “downs”. She still has a little trouble with extended exercises because she anticipates her “come to sit” or “break” but with a little reminding, does well to remain in her place. I noticed this morning that she was trying to “bury” her bowl of food after only having eaten half of it. She did get a couple of treats in the evening during “place” practice in the living room so it could be that she was full from the night before. She loves the treats her families packed for her and enjoys them on an elevated bed in the living room! Stay tuned for more!

Today Mochi and I went to the Citadel Outlets to practice our exercises! Luckily it wasn’t all too crowded and it allowed Mochi to practice with a comfortable level of distractions. Mochi practiced “place, extended sit, extended down, heel and come to sit”! I will be introducing the e-collar tomorrow to begin fading out the use of the leash. She seems to be settling in better to being outside and acted skittish when someone or someone brushed by her. Stay tuned for more!
